Nice one Joe. I had a kickflip win tonight. Just setup my Sons new board and we went out for a roll around. Bumped into some of his friends from school and they were all "do a trick". I'm 47 and...it hurts to fall now. I looked at my Son and he said "do a kickflip". First try it flipped double and I didn't put feet on it. Second try it flipped once and I landed it. Now I'm king of the hill baby :D 47 and validated by 11 year olds. I don't care. I will take take it :) Winner winner Pizza for dinner tonight.

38 years old right here and before that Nyjah Interview i was pretty much "Andrew reynolds" foot positioning. I would get 3 out of 10 tries on my kickflps. After this im 9 out of 10 skating twice a week, knee high flips. It worked for me. It is a great advice!!!

@@stormedwards356 if you want to go higher put your right foot a tiny bit more ON the board and flick forward instead of to the right. pop your hardest every try, if you want to do consistent put your foot barely on the board and just do a normal pop with a fast flip and youll land it every time

I've had this foot positioning for a few months, and it's been bizarre to go from 1 out of 5 to 9 out of 10 if not 10 out of 10. You can see in the slow mo: his pop is significantly quicker than flick, popping from the inside pocket like a front pop shuv, his body is also perfectly parallel with the board.

The way i set my mind into kickflips, back when i skated, is that i always tried to make a circular motion with my front foot, and be sure it was higher than the back one, also i always did tricks with strength forcing that pop like Luan Oliveira. This way i was always very secure about flicking and landing it very consistenly, even if my foot was not in proper position.

I personally like and feel like your foot should be on the board as much as it can be. The better I can cruise, carve, go fast, go over bumps, cracks, actually in the trick position the better because it sets me up to be able to do that trick whereever, whenever and in tern makes me consistent because I am more comfortable and not falling off my board the whole time.

One thing you have to consider is that Nyjah is notorious for having really tight trucks, if you have loose trucks this can cause you to turn and lose balance. When i learnt klickflips it was the opposite the more I had my foot on the board and flicked confidently thats when I became consistent.

I'm just beginning to learn kickflips so take this with NO grains of salt... But the way Nyjah does them is the only way that I've been able to get the board to flip. No other foot placement has worked for me (by the way this is the 1st time I'm hearing that's how he kickflips) I don't put my foot so close to the bolts though, so it's something for me to add. Remember though if I'm not mistaken he rides his trucks pretty tight...so I'm sure that helps with stability. I also have a set up with tight trucks but I've been riding a set up with medium loose trucks recently.

Maybe try to lift up your front knee more waiting for the nose to be higher, because your front foot doesn't actually touch the nose going through it, your foot goes sideway and not straight. Doing this would make the upper of your shoe touching the nose, flicking is easier and it will make your board fliping higher and tweak. Been working on my kickflips copying Jake Hayes's for 2 months now and it made me improving a lot lately
@localjoe
@localjoe 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that jake hayes trick tip is so good! Didn't realize I'm missing my nose I'll have to pay closer attention.
@marcantoine7105
@marcantoine7105 3 жыл бұрын
@@localjoe Yeah i saw your video about him, it's a good one. About your front foot you don't really miss the nose it's more that it doesn't fully goes through it. I appreciate your videos because you share what it's like to learn skateboarding, to look for the smallest details that would make a difference... and it's not that common. I mean there are not so many people trying to really improve their kickflip once they have it. I am the same. And after 5 months of studies lol here is my understanding about kickflips : first find the space between your feet that works for you (because we don't jump the same way), second the longer your deck is the harder it is to flick through (especially if you don't have long legs, i went from a 32.1"/ 14.45"WB to 31.8/ 14"WB and it's a huge difference), once you have determined the position you're confortable with : the more your front foot is on the board the more it'll have to go sideway, the more it hangs out the straighter it'll have to go, the more it's near to the nose the easier it is and CONSISTENT, if you put it far away from the nose it will be way harder to get a consistent kickflip (because you have to "aim right from afar", it's less forgiving) BUT you can jump higher IF you don't drag all the way to the nose : you lift your knee up and put directly your foot in position to wait for the nose, AND you'll have to work very hard on your back foot to go higher because the board tweak high and strong... it's really really hard but it's really really beautifull... It's the king of the kickflips lol. In conclusion : as long as your front foot goes through the nose at the exact kickflip area WITH the upper of the shoe you'll get a good kickflip, no matter where your feet were. And the pop is not very important, you can put your back foot closer to the bolts if it helps you to be more confortable getting your front foot closer to the nose... It's a Science lol, keep up the good videos Joe !

Nyjah is able to put his foot so far off the board and maintain stability because he skates really tight trucks, so if your trucks turn, his technique wouldn't be all that beneficial. What really helped my kickflips improve was to think of the flick more three-dimensionally, where I think about the flick as sort of pushing the board into its spin. I hope that makes sense haha...I think a lot of times, people tend to look at it in a two-dimensional way, where the board is just this flat object and you're sliding your foot along a certain path and then off, and that for me tends to result in much lower kickflips where you land down onto it as it flops over, rather than the board flipping up into your feet.

I feel you on this topic. Found out that I don't have them like before especially up/down something. Made some minor tweak and it was just flicking straight up extending your leg like doing a ninja kick which helped me a ton. Sick local park tho !
@PHeMoX
@PHeMoX 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but I do think there is a certainly subtlety to the timing that changes, because if you want to have the drag up the nose to lift the board up to kick flip onto something, you really do want to have your front foot more on the board. I doubt Nyjah gets all the air from just the pop itself. He must be doing some dragging of the nose, delay the final flick and then get it done.
@localjoe
@localjoe 3 жыл бұрын
Delaying the flick and then ninja flicking seems to be a theme of really good kickflippers like jake hayes for example

part of the reason for his flicks might comes from his light trucks and skinny wheels (thunder hollow light 147 / 300g). and you skate indy standard(376g) and wide wheels. I have tried both of the trucks. actually I have to place my foot like him to get the decent flick in thunder hollow, otherwise the board would be pushed away, even my ollies would become ollie north. when skating indys my foot place just like normal ollie. try a pair of really light trucks and you will flick like nyjah instantly🤙

gotta make it where when you flick it levels out the board like you do on an ollie… more near the bolts less distance of dragging the foot off the the corner. more center of the board the slower it will flick. More off the far corner faster it will flip. when I started I used to place my foot almost middle and it would rocket. Then I went back and learned the proper way which for me felt like more of doing an Ollie and continue letting the front foot slide off the front of the nose. Then I got where I could actually feel it on the nose and flick my foot. it evened it out so much better and the back would automatically come up and hit the bottom of my back foot. but rolling was lot easier for me then standing still. now my kick flips are high and soaked up like my ollies

Nyjahs kick flip set up is bad with loose trucks. not many pro skaters skate their trucks as tight as Nyjah, this is why its a very unique set up. love the vids by the way, your killing it.

Hilarious, I kickflip with just my toes on the board and I've actually been trying to change it to get more of my foot on, more or less to be able to kickflip from closer to my Ollie position so it's not as much of an adjustment to set up for. But totally bass ackwards to what your working with lol ..maybe I'll just treat it with the same idea, I'll warm up with more of my foot on and then let the foot go to where it wants. Thanks again for these man!
@localjoe
@localjoe 3 жыл бұрын
haha thats funny I think its important that at least part of your foot is crossing the imaginary line from you top bolts to the bottom bolts. If you don't get in that zone a little your gonna swerve a lot. doesn't need to be a lot take nyjah for an example but it needs to get in there at least to some degree. Maybe that helps!

The key is flicking at the correct time. The stance is preference and will develop as you perfect the trick. For an Ollie the front foot slides up to level the board (obviously). The goal of a high Ollie is to level the board at the highest point after the pop. Kickflips are exactly the same. You want to slide the foot up to the pocket at the highest point of the pop. The flick is just an extension of the sliding motion off the corner of the nose just above the pocket. A good kickflip is all about getting a as much of an Ollie as possible winthin the trick.

he also rides an 8" deck when alot of other pros are riding at least an 8.25" up to 8.5" so their toe would be in the same position their is just more board on the sides so more of the foot is on it.

Foot placement is only 5 percent i would say.. i can stand crossfoot and do a regular kickflip, place em like a heelflip and still do the exact same kickflip. Hell, i can do the same kickflips on combat boots, cowboyboota and barw feet.. the trick is in the ankle..
