I bought a FLIR ONE camera for Iphone 6 a couple of months ago and I've used it on several hive location and removal jobs where the exact location of the hive was difficult to determine. It works really good and has prevented a lot of unnecessary tear of building materials. It is best to use it early in the morning before the sun heats everything up since it picks up on temperature contrasts. I even used it to locate a plumbing leak in a concrete slab.

Alright, going back to this video from over 6 years ago solidifies what I already thought I knew! Today's date is 10/9/22 and you have ruined me to anyone else's bee channel! I like Mr. Ed and your interactions a lot because of his nature and yours together but, there is something missing from when I watch yours! Maybe it's the carpentry background and being more like me, I can't quite put my finger on it but, I think I have been blessed with being able to find the right channels for me. Maybe it's because our ages aren't that far off, I'm 55 and learned discipline while I was in the Marines. I treasure you I think for your toughness traits. Seeing a past video where you showed an uncle who you said was an old worn out Marine spoke to me also. I feel worn out at 55, need to get myself in better shape while I can still. Love your channel, can't believe I still have 5 years to go! I'm thankful for the content though and look forward to diving further back. I retired early at 55 and the heat for the last 3 months has kept me from doing much, now we just need some rain in SW Missouri.

It was nice to see Biloxi sunset at the end of the video. Years after Katrina, that area was still dealing with all the destruction. Air Force school wasn't fun, but that coastline made up for it, when I could get away! Thanks for showing more than bees, because it all bees related!

I picked up a FLIR One (Android) last week and am having fun with it. Easy to justify on the grounds of locating heat loss spots at the house during the winter; but also checking on the health of the hives during the cold season without actually making contact with the hive bodies. Good stuff.

Great job getting that mess out! I grew up in Mississippi (outside Hattiesburg) so I know the sun beating down on you on that side of the house must have be LOADS of fun (HA! NOT!) I fell down the proverbial KZbin rabbit hole today watching your videos, nice job! I worked in local TV news for about 20 years in the Phoenix area, and we did quite a few stories about bee removal as well as Africanized bee attacks. So nice to see careful attention to honeybee care and preservation. I did get chased down a mountain while out hiking one day, though! Not sure which type of bee, but they came out of a hole in the rocks as soon as I climbed up top and they went straight for my head. Got stung once in the forehead but that's it, whew! I respect the little buggars. Subscribed!

The "bee man" (their words) used a FLIR camera inside our unit to locate the colony. Center of the attic under a HVAC unit. =Bees *KNOW exactly where to stay nice and cool +and warm in the winter!*

Thumbs up on the equipment. You don't have to drill test holes in sheet rock inside homes. You'll get your money's worth from the technology. My requeening the Africanized bees was successful. I got gentle bees now. I was actually able to mow on my lawn tractor in front of the bee hive with out getting suited up. When I open up the bee hives the bees are calm and I just about don't need a bee suit. I will keep the bee suit on. I prefer to not get stung.

GREAT Idea! I wanna see what a FLIR looks like in my winter storage building! 3200 hives kept at 40 degrees in the cold ass part of Montana winter. I can tell you this; In the late fall when we have our 1st few snow storms, I don't have to inspect a hive to know it's dead. The lid will have snow (Dead) or no snow (Alive). They produce a ton of heat. When it was -31 F here in the winter, the air conditioning to keep them at +40 kept kicking on. I kinda want a FLIR camera, but not the Iphone version. I want to mount a good one to my Quad (Drone) and help the local Search & Rescue around here find the helpless tourists that get lost on a daily. Stop Trying to Pet The Buffalo! No Selfies either! Keep it going Rooster We love you!

That's a great idea. This one works at a pretty good distance. Problem is that the price rises sharply when you get past these little units. I bet you could pick out dead boxes in a warehouse though.
@TheMontanaDave
@TheMontanaDave 8 жыл бұрын
628DirtRooster In the Ideal world, Nothing goes into that warehouse that has not been treated 2x (We'll talk about that privately sometime) And or been checked 1-2 times before they go in there for 2 months. But yeah, it happens. I love the idea like I said for finding missing people. I can fly my drone (I flew these 6 years ago before they became a rave) without causing a human to get harmed like a helicopter crew; to find them with a good FLIR. People freak out about drones and yet from a guy who has operated for 5+ years- I wanna use mine to help and film cool stuff/ not look in your back yard. I love the FLIR Idea though, this can be a damn good tool for guys like you that do a lot of removals. I wish I had the time and I wish I got paid to do removals (Most the ones I do are OUR bees so I am kinda obligated-Pro Bono) but for those of you that do, this is great!
@628DirtRooster

Been watching your videos for a while and am enjoying the education I'm getting. You see, I'm allergic to Bee's and have had two very bad experiences in my lifetime. Ironically after returning home from Vietnam in 1969 I went to work for an Pest Control outfit. I got a call for Honey Bee's and went out for them that evening. The hive was in the caretakers attic at a cemetery and it was freaking huge. Laying on my belly, I used a long wand and a hand pump to fog them with cyanide. My thoughts at the time were ..... after surviving two tours of Vietnam I'm going to get killed in an attic by Bee's. :O)
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you survived the bees and the cyanide. Commercial beekeepers used to use cyanide if they had to kill a hive for some reason. I don't know anyone who uses it any more.

. Use a set of long tongs to get that comb that fell in the wall. I have a set that we use for the BBQ outside and they are a few feet long (the grill gets mighty hot). I'm sure that they sell ones even longer than what I got. Or you could use one of those grabbers on the long pole that folks use to reach things on high shelves or change light bulbs. Man, you have nerves of steel, but, best of all, you respect and value the bees. Really good work. In this part of Tennessee, we are getting very short of honey bees and I'm quite sure it's due to an over population of Asian Hornets. I'm on 10 acres and have killed 6 large nests of hornets within about 4 years. 3 in trees, one in my attic, and 2 in the blockwork of my shop. I don't kill the Bald faced (Black) hornets because they feed largely on yellow jackets. It takes a mean bee to attack yellow jackets.

Don't touch the pink or green insulation, that's fiber glass, it's basically tiny shards of glass, touching it with you're bare hands can cause intense itching and on rare occasions infections, you can remove the shards from you're skin by putting a strip of tape on the affected area and ripping it off.
@TwoTall1988

most people will only have a mild reaction to fiberglass insulation and usually only if it touches sensitive skin.

a little late to the party, but if you were to get one of those extended grabber things and attach some sort of plating to each nub it would be perfect for grabbing comb that drops into crevices like that one. just for the future that might be something you could do if pieces are in another precarious place like that.

I came looking for FLIR info, too. Glad I stuck around for the rest of it. Fascinating stuff. Have you ever run into an Africanized hive? These seemed pretty docile (though, I wouldn't know what normal bee behavior is), so I'd guess that they are not Africanized?

Nothing like a boy with new toys! I always get excited when you post new videos. Have you ever used a neck-wrap for keeping cool? I have had heat stroke before, and it is not pretty. Let me know your neck size and I'll make a couple for you to try out :))
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
I had some of those neck wraps but I just found it too much trouble trying to work with that on my neck. I just need to start work before sunrise and knock off at lunch. I came real close to heat stroke one time about fifteen years ago and the only thing that stopped it was there was a kiddie pool that had just been filled sitting on my driveway. I fell in fully dressed, wallet and all.
