The ‘bay’ in the Netherlands is called the ‘Waddenzee’. This roughly translates to ‘mudflat sea’ (I had to look it up, so it could be a weird translation). The Netherlands border the North Sea with the islands (Waddeneilanden). Below the islands is a body of water called ‘The Waddenzee’. The Waddenzee directly borders the ‘Afsluitdijk’ (‘Cut-off-dike’). Below the ‘Afsluitdijk’ is a body of water called ‘IJsselmeer’. This body of water was, before the Afsluitdijk was created, filled with salt water from the sea. However, since it is now a giant lake (since it is seperated from the sea by the Afsluitdijk), it is filled with sweet water instead. Fun fact to add: not only a lake was created in the area of the ‘bay’, but also a whole mass of land is created, to habit people. This was done in the 1900s, between 1940 and 1970. This province is now located in the IJsselmeer. It’s the province called Flevoland. The name derives from the Flevo Lake (a name given in the Roman period), that was present in the same space, around 2000 years before the creation of Flevoland.
