I hosted this zoom presentation with Izzy Edwards an amazing young woman who had the goal to photograph all 19 species of owls before her 18th birthday. Watch this informative presentation to find out how she did it!

Anyone who really wants to increase the number of owls they see (and all other animals) should invest in a good thermal scope. I think even the most accomplished wildlife spotter will be shocked at how many animals they walk past. Hard to swallow the price, but well worth it in my opinion. The capability of modern thermal scopes is astounding.

I'm still watching this (have to watch it in spurts because of well life). I've been trying to find owls for years. Your technique of following their calls in the evening to find them morning with the other tips was eye opening! Thank you! Looking forward to using this information!

And I didn't realize how young and accomplished you are! I'm even more impressed now! Amazing talent, insight, knowledge, AND ethical standards! Can't say I had that ethical stance at that age, sadly. Most impressive miss and looking forward to seeing your work advance.

What a wonderful presentation by Izzy. She will do very well in life, I am sure!. Great job too, John. I really enjoyed that. I live in Eastern Ontario, Canada and my favourite birds to photograph are Owls and Hawks. Picked up some great tips from this video.

Very informative. Im just discovering the topic of owls. I recently started hearing owls at night wooing each other. Its Dec. and I think its breeding time for long horned owls and its early Dec.

Oh, I love this! I have seen and photographed several barred owls here in East Tennessee. Never seen another kind. But last time I was at my sister’s house, urban North Carolina, I was shocked to hear owls from the guest room! Next time I go, I will look for them. You have such beautiful pictures!!

Hi all, Izzy here! Wanted to give an update as I recently rewatched this recording and realized I misinformed about the origin of the Barred Owl! The Barred Owl is NOT a native species in the Pacific Northwest of North America. Barred Owls are native to the East Coast and only migrated westward in the late 1800s following human alterations to the landscape. They are now considered an invasive species on the West Coast as they displace native wildlife species including the threatened Northern Spotted Owl. Thanks for uploading this video John, I appreciate the opportunity to speak with you!

PS--yes the Barred Owl invasiveness is a real threat to many native species here in the Great Plains too.

@@JohnColdSnap Thanks John. I found out she's there right now. She spoke with Sparky yesterday and I sent her a message this am. She was shooting Snowy Owls with someone from Minnesota, I think the same day as the interview. Have to applaud any young person with such lofty wildlife and naturalistic goals.
