There should be a memorial plaque to acknowledge the victims who died there.

Apparently Max had two daughters:Ilse is alive and well and living in Toronto but Hannelore perished in Auschwitz. His wife Henriette died in the Ghetto, there is a record of this somewhere.

I don't think he would have any trouble passing himself off as Reichsdeutsch and had the yellow star not made an appearance then he may have got away. However remember that he did not have documents and would have had problems at the first control.

True,it wouldn't have stopped him feeling conspicuous walking the streets I suppose.I should imagine if he'd managed to get on a train the journey would've been fraught with anxiety as well to say the least.

I knew he was deported with his wife and daughters but not what happened to them. Well done for adding that!

Lodz was renamed Litzmannstadt apparently. Therefore I was wondering if there were possibly ethnic Germans living here who had the upper hand for obvious reasons;maybe Max could've passed himself off as one of them if he had have been challenged in the street for example?

I would've thrown the star away if I'd have been Max! Dropped it down a drain or something!
