If you're looking for the perfect family hike in the Highlands, look no further than the Loch Kernsary Round. This walk from Poolewe offers a delightful blend of natural beauty, wildlife encounters, and manageable terrain that makes it an ideal outing for all ages.
A Scenic Start
Our adventure began on a slight damp Scottish morning. The start of the walk is easily accessible with car park just by the bridge in Poolewe where the route starts from. The first couple of miles are an easy walk along well-maintained estate roads by the side of the River Ewe, my Dad and Ruth joined us for this part of the walk, before turning back to sample the delights of Bridge Cottage Cafe.
The trail changes from a tarmacced estate road to a rougher 4x4 track leading to the estate buildings about 3 miles in. At this point, you are greeted by fabulous views down Loch Kernsary and for us the sight of a couple of red deer and a small herd of ponies.
Breathtaking Views
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Loch Kernsary Round is the stunning array of views it offers. The trail winds through a variety of landscapes, from silver birch woodlands to open moorlands. Each turn revealed a new vista, from the rolling hills and rugged mountains to the sparkling loch itself. The ever-changing scenery kept the hike engaging and provided countless opportunities for photos.
A Family-Friendly Path
The trail is well-suited for families, with an easy to moderate difficulty level that is manageable for both young children and older family members. The path is generally well-maintained, with easy inclines and plenty of spots to rest and take in the views. We packed a picnic and found a perfect spot by the loch to enjoy lunch (courtesy of Crumbs of Gairloch), surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature.
The return trail by the side of Loch Kernsary is a little more undulating and a few bits where Iona in particular enjoyed the more “scrambly” nature of it, but nothing too challenging.
Ewan also took the opportunity, when the path dipped right by the side of the loch, to strip off his boots and socks and go for a “slightly chilly” paddle in the loch. The rest of us weren’t so brave/crazy!
Creating Memories
In conclusion, hiking the Loch Kernsary Round is the perfect family adventure in the Highlands. With its stunning views, wildlife, and family-friendly trail, it promises a perfect day of family adventure. Whether you're seasoned hikers or just looking for a fun day out, this trail has something for everyone. So pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots, and set off on a memorable journey through one of Scotland's most beautiful landscapes.

About Ian, Iona and Family
===============================
Each week on this channel Ian (Dad) and Iona share our little adventure experiences, often joined by Ewan (Iona’s older brother) and Ruth (Mum) too.
Our weekends often start with parkrun. Iona is on a non-repeat parkrun tourism streak having now visited over 100 different places since she started parkrunning. But we don’t just do parkun and dash home, we love exploring the area and often use bikes and trains for our travels to keep our carbon footprint low and because it adds to the adventure too. When school holidays arrive, longer adventures are possible with Ewan and Iona both being keen cycle tourists and mountain climbers!
So if you like heading outdoors and your idea of a perfect weekend includes parkrun, climbing a mountain or exploring new places on two wheels then we would love to have you join us on our adventures.
We’d love it if you subscribed so you can follow our journey and hopefully be inspired to get out the door and have your own little adventures. Do like and leave comments on our videos too on questions you might have or ideas for places to explore or adventures to go on.
