Done a lot of boating in pool 13. Lived in Savanna and Sabula. It's crazy back in the 90's I never looked at a map. I had all those wing dams memorized. Good friend's dad operated the swing bridge for many years back in the 80's and 90's. Miss that area and the people. Thanks for the video.

Hey, you finally recorded my town! I live in Sabula. It's pronounced with a long "U", Sa-byou-la. I've watched a LOT of of pilots thread the needle through the drawbridge over the years. More than one ended in disaster. Going downstream in high water is a very tricky procedure. Some take it extremely slow and spend 45 minutes getting through and then there are the ballsy ones that go full tilt and don't even slow down. Either way it's always entertaining.

Lock and dam 15 in Rock Island, Illinois is the Rock Island Arsenal. My mother worked there for 40 years and now my 33 year old son works there.

Can you show us a video of un facing the boat and facing it back in a lock?

Speaking of some “can you show us “ requests- could you show us the control layout for both rudder sets? In particular could you show us how your flanking rudders are employed? Thanks!!!

I was Just wondering if you ever come through Meldahl dam, 7 miles up River (Augusta) -marker 427- a lot of boats stop here for groceries and supplies. My wife takes the orders and she can't recall the name.

Rarely nowadays. It’s been about 10 year since I’ve been up that way. I started my wheelhouse career on upper end of that Ohio, running up to Pittsburgh

My old captain Prozac Ron hit the lock gates at Starved Rock Lock. I was on the back watch asleep in my room when it happened. I woke up to the lock master raising all kinds of hell. I guess he came in too fast. It was my first trip out, and I had only been on the towboat a few days. It's nice how things have changed with training. I never had any training prior to working towboats. I was hired by river man marine, and they just threw me out there to learn as I go.

Does the tow not handle very well if you just continued on over in the slot instead of switching back like you were before?
@marktwained4 ай бұрын
Yes, specifically with loaded barges. It would make wheels and rudders much less effective, as it would cut off flow through.
@marktwained4 ай бұрын
I have run like that with longer vessels, but it was quite a challenge.

Hope this isn’t too stupid a question but what is the purpose of the lock that you go through?
@marktwained4 ай бұрын
To pass through dams that are on the river for flood control and to control depth for vessel traffic year round.

Guttenberg is pronounced Gut-( like your insides of your body) ten- berg. I chuckle everything you pronounce it. I'm from Iowa. About 1 1/2 hour west of McGregor.

Thank you for that information. I’m from Hobart and Gotebo area of Oklahoma. It is frustrating to hear folks pronounce differently (wrongly). 👍🏻 My German-Russian blood had me confident in my mispronunciation. Haha👍🏻

Love the videos Kyle Why can’t you just stay in that notch and run up the river like that?
@marktwained4 ай бұрын
For handling reasons. The loaded barge would not allow for rudders and wheels (propellers) to be as effective.

What are you carrying in those red flag barges? Diesel or gasoline?

Not red flag barges. Liquid fertilizer.

The hardest part for me was learning how to lasso the button after breaking tow and getting pulled out of the lock with the winch . It was scary at first because I knew if I didn't catch it and stop the tow it would be really bad
