This is NOT a love story, per say. It's really about the loss of his mother and father's love. He even says, ' Strangled by the wishes of pater. Hoping for the arms of mater. Gets to me sooner or later '. This is a true story about his life. His mother abandoned the family when he was a child and he had a contentious relationship with his father. If memory serves mew well. he wrote the song when he was about 17.

the song was written by mick from when he was a young boy back in his home city of manchester uk he written when he was in a bad up bringing and when he formed simply red released this song . bad times when his mother left had no love from his father. get the drift.

The story in the video is he was in an abusive home as a kid. He is just now leaving the town as an adult, probably because he kept holding on the memory of his hard childhood. The lady is his teacher that he remember seeing with his father or somebody she shouldn't have been caught with.

His mother left when he was 3 so he grew living with his dad. Mick has never talked badly about his father in several interviews i've seen , actually had nothing but praise for his father. Also music videos aren't always direct reflections of song lyrics , all depended on who was directing the videos. Some of the videos from the 80's had nothing to do with the song at all .
