Great flying!! Hi Martin, can you do a video on your setup with the 3D foamy's from your radio settings?

Great video. Brilliant idea with the diodes, and fantastic flying. The plus side of the brownout was it demonstrated the airframe can survive a pretty solid lawn dart.

Had a similar problem on my Yak55 foamie last week. Plane just fell out of the sky. Thought battery had died, then thought ESC was shot. Turned out the aileron servo had failed and was drawing more current than the ESC could provide,

Had similar myself last year, radio shouted out a receiver voltage warning high up in the sky, so I started bringing it down, then about 9' off the ground I lost all control and the foamie plopped onto the ground. Couldn't see an obvious fault but it gave voltage warnings as soon as I connected a fresh pack, and those cleared up when I unplugged all the servos. First time I'd seen telemetry both save a plane, and help with diagnosing the root cause. Converted me to wanting it in all my planes for sure!

Hi Martin. Question. Your external BEC is switched to 6V. ( you switched it from 5V to 6V for faster servo time, I saw in video)I have the same Blue colored Hobbywing BEC for my model. What voltage has your controller BEC? Probably it's 5V. Is it OK ? With 5V controller BEC power servo will be less faster.
@MartinPickering-PickeringRC3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tigran, thanks to the Diodes, all that happens is they would run at 6v as long as that Bec has power left and would drop to 5v during extreme power consumptions. That said, I dropped the voltage back down, so the torque and speed os always the same, as all we gaining the higher output from the Bec (from memory it was 5A at 5v as opposed to 3A at 6v)

I'm having the same issue with a yak I'm building. It's got 6 servos and it shuts down the reciever I'm using a 30 amp esc well actually 2 because it's a twin. Here's the question I've been told to disconnect 1of the bec with a twin. Could I actually use both bec to solve the issue or would that burn something up. 🤔
@MartinPickering-PickeringRC3 жыл бұрын
You can use the same trick mate, just add a Diode to EACH of the esc BEC. (If you only do one, the other one will burn up lol)
@WickedTRX3 жыл бұрын
There’s a 0.6V drop through the diode, so only 4,4V to the servos. I have used other workaround, but you’ll land with an unbalanced lipo. Take 2S power from the balance lead directly to the servos, number 1 and 2 cell, very importante to keep ground common!!! Decent digital servos will take the 8.4V no problem.
@MartinPickering-PickeringRC3 жыл бұрын
Schottky Diodes have a much smaller drop, I lost about 0,1v which I found to be very acceptable for the solution. Not all servos will hold HV, especially in this size. These ones are only rated to 6v and will kick the pants off every other HV servo I have tried...
@og_myxiplx3 жыл бұрын
@@MartinPickering-PickeringRC Yup, the DS95i has a reputation of being the big daddy of small heli tail servos. If you have a tail problem with a heli, or a bobble you can't get rid of, no matter how carefully you go over the mechanics, or how much fine tuning effort you put into the FBL, fit a DS95i and watch all your problems disappear. Insane torque, centering, and speed means that servo literally brute forces tails into behaving. I've seen a lot of people over the years left amazed by how well they work.

Hey Martin, I always enjoy your videos! I've been sport flying for over 10 years and set out to learn 3D around 6 months ago (in part inspired by your videos), it's been going well, but I still have some difficulty not giving the wrong rudder input while sustaining inverted flight. No trouble with roll or pitch, and I can knife edge and even rolling harrier ok as well as hover and torque roll. But when I try staying in an inverted harrier I almost always mix it up and lose coordination so I just end up having to roll out. Any advice? Thanks for any tips you might have, and for all you contribute to the hobby!
@MartinPickering-PickeringRC3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, this is going to sound really strange... but try to lean forward, backwards or sideways, and turn your head a little, kind of having your face at an angle that it would be looking at the canopy of the model if it where in a hover next to you. This helps try and visualize the model in a “hover” position and if you can do that, left is always left... right right... 😄

Would be easier to run a HV servo set like the HV93, and just power the electronics from 2 cells of the battery pack. Sure, those cells will drain a little faster than the others, but 4A is nothing to them, and a good charger will easily balance them out as you charge. Some receivers will also then let you monitor battery voltage, giving you flight pack telemetry without needing to add mAh or voltage sensors.
@MartinPickering-PickeringRC3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but the HV93 came out a week after I picked up the DS95... Not sure of any receiver that has telemetry per cell though, just overall voltage?
@og_myxiplx3 жыл бұрын
@@MartinPickering-PickeringRC No, I don't think any have per cell, but overall voltage is fine. I run a HV receiver on a F3P model with a little logic in the radio to have it use the average voltage readout over a period of a few seconds so that it doesn't alarm every time I pump the throttle. It's amazingly accurate, I can land consistently with the packs at 3.75V per cell. And if you were powering the electronics straight off 2 cells, that would give you telemetry through the receiver of the 2 cells with the lowest voltage. I just wish there were more HV servos out there, it's a lovely neat solution, way better than flying to a timer if you have a varied flying style :-)
