"Never speak to strangers", they used to say. And, I get it, it's a catch-all safety warning for children. But it has skewed things terribly.
I used to get to talk to adults around the place all the time, as a child - more importantly, adults would talk to children - it gives you a perspective on the world, pulls both of you out of your bubbles and teaches you that things change all the time and get used to it. (Apparently Buddha said something like that, at one time.)
Aaaanywaaay! More seriously, I was having a really, really bad, late-teenage day many years ago and when I went into school, I whole string of people said 'hello' to me as we passed. It flicked a switch and changed the day and the year and, perhaps, my life. So, creepy or not, I insist on saying 'hello' to people as I pass on the surface of this same planet.
Aaanyway! No. 2 This is a man to say 'hello' to. He's Joe Power and he is a flâneur (he'll explain).
All the best,
Ronan
