#Landrover #LandroverDiscovery #LR3
In this episode we have to deal with the know problem of the rear hatch unlock mechanism failing on our Land Rover Discovery 3. Because this happened before, we actually knew exactly what to do but it was still a debacle. We show how we fixed the rear hatch unlock mechanism.
Hope you enjoy the video.

I came here hoping to find a solution to my Debaggle but ended up watching the whole video anyway. The upper tailgate doesn't respond when I press the switch, but it responds with the key fab. I tried closing the circuit(two black wires coming from the micro switch)but still no response. Could it be a broken wire between the switch and actuator?

Greetings from South Africa, yesterday Myself and my son went to an auction house looking for a Discovery 3. Yes here in SA we refer to them as Discovery or Disco. We found a 2007 2.7 v6 HSE with 315000km on the clock. What we could see is that this vehicle was previously loved by its owner. We bid in a furious bidding war and won. E5627.00, think a bit high but it felt right and it was my favorite colour. Dark blue with cream interior. So I am officially part of the Land Rover family. The work now begins. I have been watching your videos for over 2 yrs now and have learnt a hell of a lot, THANK YOU. The daunting tasks ahead don’t seem so scarring. Juan Alberts

@@Vera_and_Christian Thank you for the advice. I have booked it in with a Land Rover specialist that lives two houses away from me. He opened his own workshop and charges €36.56/hr labour not the €73.12 the Agents charge. 1st on the list is a full front to back inspection 2nd is an oil and filter change and oil pressure test for pressure and seconds. On the oil filer cap it recommends Castrol SEA 5w30. If this is all good 3rd will be all fluids and gearbox flush and all filters 4th an aicon service. I will update on vehicle status once the report is complete. Can’t wait for tonight’s video👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Being I have a full build in the back of my LR3, similar to your friends black one, I ran my emergency cable out the outside of the gate, under the large black plastic trim. Great video - as always. A couple of things - if the actuator goes, it is identical to a Ford part which is a fraction of the cost of the Land Rover part, it's actually the same actuator, but without an external bit which is easy to swap over. - also, there is a UK company that makes a mechanical release so you can easily open from the inside. It does the same job as your emergency release, but is a well engineered opener and the actuator is screwed by the bass unit. Info and videos on these are on the PowerfulUK You Tube channel (and I know you both watch each others channels as he mentions you somjetimes and you mention him). That was a lot of water for some canoes - where I come from in Teddington on the Thames the lock has a set of rollers by the lock so small boats and canoes can just be slid down the rollers instead of having to go through the lovk.

Hi to you both from the UK, if you look up a company called "Landrover Passion" they do a rear hatch release that is pretty simple to fit and looks factory. It is really handy if the actuators fails or that plastic connector breaks also if your camping in the back of the discovery as it allows you to open the hatch from the inside, I have fitted one to mine and it only took about an hour. One D3 trick you may not know is if you hold lock and unlock buttons together on the dashboard for 3 seconds it will release the tailgate. You need an assistant to pull it. This is important because the upper tailgate switch can also break and it helps tell you the accurate problem. You can also program the key fob LR button to unlock but do this before the switch breaks. Then you can open without assistant by pulling on tailgate yourself. This emergency trick can keep you going if the actuator is still ok.

The drawers in the back of my D2 prevent access to the internal door release. My solution was to buy a Choke cable kit (available from eBay/Amazon for old cars & kitcars) and fit it to the door just below the window, where it can always be reached from inside the vehicle. The Choke cable is pretty strong AND it has a nice little pull-handle so it doesn't look like a "bodge-fix".
@zeroparity

Thanks for this idea. I need to build a release for my lr4 that’s accessible from the rear passenger compartment as I have an Australian manufactured cargo barrier fitted. If the actuator broke on my vehicle it would involve cutting the barrier to gain access to the load space. I was looking at bicycle brake cables and recliner mechanism handles as a solution. A choke mechanism sounds a much better idea.

Check the oil pressure on Joachim's LR3. That doesn't sound too good to me. The first thing you hear on a modern diesel engine with low oil pressure are the valve lifters rattling because they don't get enought oil. Similar to Veras when the oil pump was not at it's best. Othewise another great and entertaining video. 😊 I think you will need a bigger shop soon. 😂 Never endning story with LR's. 😂 They are great when they (if they) work. 😉

Oilpressure is just fine on that vehicle. Believe me, Christian knows that himself, and we checked it. But not every rattling in the engine compartment is related to the Oilsystem. We did an extensive maintenance overhaul on Joachim's most neglected Disco last Saturday. Wait for the video in a couple of weeks. I think that will be the video with the most OMG's coming from me, and a couple from Christian. But in Joachim's defense, he is an emergency first responder and does have more important things to do than look after his Disco, especially working a lot of weekends. That is why we are more than happy to help him out.😅👍🙋‍♀️Vera

Talking about a trail repair you can do in the desert, some colleagues of mine in the 1980s were 'desert bashing' in Saudi Arabia using an ancient Land Rover when their HT leads went leaving them marooned in the middle of nowhere. A local drove past and offered help. He looked at the burnt out leads and wandered off to find some greeny scrub branches. He cut them to size and inserted them into the plug leads and the distributer cap. Apparently, it worked - they are salty inside or something and can conduct electricity for a bit.

Those rear seat latches are incredibly flimsy and brake easily, you need to be very careful pulling them. I had to replace the rear top door latch actuator button, water seeped in over the years and ruined the solinoid. Replacement is fairly easy provided the door latch is unlocked! I didn't have to do the open heart surgery as shown in your video, thankfully.

My 2005 Range Rover Sport when converted to km has 314,858km on the clock. (195,644 miles) I’ve only had to replace tyres, brakes and rear suspension bushes in 3 years and 50k miles. I’m waiting for these faults to start soon. My luck must be running out soon.

Yeah😅👍But wait for one of our next videos. We serviced a Discovery yesterday, which also a lesser maintained Land Rover. And wait for what we found that the owner did not even know about it. 🙋‍♀️Vera

It just broke on my LR3! Had to put a whole load of filming gear into the side doors. I don't think any of the local garages will match Christian's level of repair. Unfortunately.

My lower tailgate switch started to get intermittent failure and finally stopped working. After investigation, the solution is easy for anyone and free! 1. take off the lower tailgate top trim (4 cross-headed screws) and remove upwards to free two remaining clips. 2. Prise out the switch around its black surround. 3. Unplug the back of the switch taking care not to let the cable drop back into the hole. 4. Open the switch via the two small clips on either side using a very small screwdriver/pointer etc. 5. Use pliers if necessary to remove the two metal spring clips which have held the whole switch in the tailgate door. In fact it is these clips which deform/squash the switch body, stopping the switch from popping up! (Alternatively file the hole larger in the lower tailgate steel). 6. Re-assemble and connect the switch then test the switch operation. Should be ok now. 6. Place the switch back in the hole in the lower tailgate. It will be loose but it doesn't matter. You could glue it in position taking care not to get glue on the moving white part. 7. Test it again then replace the long trim on the top edge of the tailgate. 8. Final test. Hope yours is this simple! David

mm. happened to me, fortunately the initial problem was the switch, it fell apart inside the rubber cover thing. but that's an easy fix to open the door as we all know. but then the actuator failed. £25 repair module on Ebay.
