Locked Up--and it delivers the claustrophobia with the many locked doors, the limited map, and all the back & forth, which can get a bit tedious. But, for me, the constantly changing environment and mostly effective jump scares take the edge off the tedium. Chris' spirited commentary makes all the difference, of course. 😊 👍

@AlexOlinkiewicz
@AlexOlinkiewicz 3 жыл бұрын
@@MujinClone First this game is $10... As an indie developer myself, I can tell you developers can do a lots of things that can make pre-bought assests look different for your game. Example my first game Frostbite: Deadly Climate game, I used Mixamo characters (the character models that many indie games use) and I used things like Photoshop and set up materail effects in engine to create the icicle effect on them. And currently the game I'm developing I am using assets, but I do edit them if I can to give some difference to them. There is nothing wrong with using asset, I used them all the time, but that doesn't mean developers shouldn't try and do things to help make there game stand out from the rest and a lot of these assets come with ways to customine them yet most devs I see just stick to the defualt layouts. Again still nothing wrong at all in using assets, but if devs don't try to make some possible difference with the assets they are given then they are basically make there game blend in within the crowed and that can effects the game from being memerable and can effect sales as well. Example the woods eviroment is an assets that many devs use one being that terrible indie horror Centralia game, and if I share a screenshot from one of the games you bet people couldn't tell which game the screenshot came from, and heck if someone just watch Centralia and just the came accross this game, they could easily mistake this was made by the same devs of Centralia or even think this is the same game and not give it a chance.

I've watched the whole video because I enjoy your way of playing and commenting, Chris; but honestly, if I had bought this game, I would have given up after 30 minutes or less. The atmosphere is nice, as are some of the dynamics, but it really feels as if the simple, core idea of the game was bloated and extended as to make it a much longer experience. The back-forth-trigger mechanic (at least for me) gets old soon. Normally, in these circumstances, the story and lore would perhaps keep me interested and engaged, but here, whatever story there is, it's communicated in such a fragmented, cryptic way, that it makes me lose interest quickly. (The "What's going to happen next?" soon becomes a question unrelated to the story, and more like a question about the next trick or jumpscare.) And even if the approach were, "Just immerse yourself in the experience and go with it", well, again, it's not such a compelling experience as to make me want to spend more than an hour with it. I apologise if this doesn't sound like constructive criticism. I really recognise and appreciate the effort behind the game. But it's the kind of experience that ultimately doesn't click with me. Cheers! -Rick
@ripper82
@ripper82 3 жыл бұрын
You just summarized my thoughts on this game perfectly. The tedious gameplay loop was almost entirely unrelated to the story, and the story was too weak to compensate for the tedious gameplay. I mean, let's be honest - Chris was being charitable by only calling out a few tropes, like the rotating crucifix. Despite having probably a hundred "scares", there were maybe 5 or 10 that were *actually* creepy or startling. Plus the story didn't even start coming together until very late in the game, but like you said, there wasn't anything compelling enough to make me want to find out how the story would unfold. Frankly I didn't even expect there to be a story, since everything that happened seemed to be a bunch of random horror game tropes strung together. By the time the bits and pieces of "depression or possession? or possession as allegory for depression?" were finally revealed, I didn't care at all - I just wanted the game to end.

Agreed. I honestly felt like this was just a mindset away from being a terrible indie horror game. I was reminded of that one where he was in an apartment going through the same kind of gameplay loop (wander around until the thing triggers the next transition), and by the time he even saw things that were supposed to be scary, he was just walking up to them because he knew there was no actual threat. He marked that one as terrible and I feel like this was fundamentally the same. None of this was scary, and the "scares" (being generous) just consisted of walking up to generic models and they'd make loud noises and vanish. The load screens were laughably timed. This one was actually *worse* than some he's marked as terrible to me. I'm surprised he enjoyed it at all let alone as much as he did!

I prefer "Summer of 58'" and "Find yourself" to this one. This might be a bit out of context but I really don't understand why they chose the German phrase " jedem das Seine" (21:28) - I feel this is a very unfortunate choice of words.

Creepy atmosphere and scares. It does sometimes feel a bit directionless, but perhaps that's what they were going for. A pity that people are exploiting the 2 hour refund rule. Great work by the developer.

The game had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, halfway through you start to get sick of the same, cheap jumpscares with only slight variations to them. Such a shame. You'd definitely still get scared by sudden loud sounds, etc. But it got repetitive, fast.

In the beginning, when the protagonist stared at the mirror with the flashlight, the VHS time stamp jumped two hours. What's the story there? Haven't finished the whole video yet. Abducted by aliens?

@@xNachtmahRx “without combat” Bruh if you want a Shooter or something go buy a shooter lol. This is a completely different horror genre, it’s not supposed to have combat.

How can you say that, he creates great atmospheric games without relying on need for cheesy jumpscares he builds suspense with a story that you want to keep following. His games have been best suspenseful games in a long time.

What's with 94 being the year of focus in horror lately? I was around in 94, it wasn't a scary year.

You dont need to make a full horror game if you make one with a small corridor....... the only good thing in this game is Chris commentary
