March 20, 2008...
One teenage girl was found dead in a mysterious cabin in the woods. She was lip sewed. It appears that she performed some unknown rituals during the few days before her death.
Oujia: Rumors provides a first-person thriller-horror survival experience taking in a haunted house. The fictional storyline is set to raise awareness against the power of rumors. The wise do not buy rumors, do you?
SYPNOSIS
In Oujia: Rumours, play as a father who’s left his daughter (Sarah) and wife in a cabin in the woods, where he promised them a new life. After 10 years of torture and judgment of his own guilt, he returned to the small little cabin, trying to right his wrong. Live Sarah's life and experience the despairing and miserable life she had after the rumors of her dad were spread.

Games like this are hard to judge because they're bad in the eyes of people who play a lot of indie horror party due to desensitization. We've seen the assets so many times, we've played the storyline so many times, we know all the tropes and we can foresee a lot of the jumpscares. It makes games like this fall flat. But for someone like my sister who doesn't play horror games, this would be scary as hell. I wouldn't see it as a terrible indie horror game. I'm not even sure I would call it bad, just..."meh."

Sigh just like the Horror Engine, it is getting really tiring seeing a lot of these Indie horror games using the exact UI system over and over again. I mean I have nothing fully against developers using assets (I use them as well in my games), the issue is that a lot of these Devs just use the default asset as is rather than using it as a starting base to create their own style that is very fitting to their game. For the most part, it really feels like the game didn't need an Inventory at all, besides 1-2 items that inventory filled up with just candles/lighters. that could have just been a little ammo like counter in the corner of the screen and you just have a dedicated button to light a new candle. Of course, the developers didn't do that cause that would require some small changes to the asset. Again not against using assets and even sticking with default things especially if the game is free and is an experimental game. But when you decide to sell your game, I kind of wish that the creators of said game try and put in a little creativity in how their games play and look in both controls and UI, cause those are just as much as important as the in-game stuff.

This game was not very scary, but it is not bad. It was kind of interesting with all those layers of remembering and putting the story together. Some polishing is needed, and it is TOO DARK. (Why do devs always think, dark is scary?)

It's odd. I actually thought it looked pretty good. The jump scares and cut scenes were a bit abrupt and janky but outside of that, I jumped a couple of times. The most negative thing was the shower curtain in the one bathroom. It ended about half a meter above the tub.... That's just going to make a mess! Your shirt looked good, though! I would call this unpolished, but not terrible. I actually see a lot of passion and creativity in it, which I'd take over aesthetics. I think you called it from the start: that comment was ominous because it was talking about your family, not the investigators. Also worth noting that Sarah's sacrifice ended up working...she got you to come back.

The game made me remember old-fashion jumpscare-based games from the early 2010-s. I felt a pang of nostalgia. The environment felt like the developer got their hands on lots of assets they felt looked cool and tried to fit them all in the game. But it wasn't as terrible as... how was it called... Autumn Dream? So i wouldn't call it a terrible game. Has some puzzles and a story at least, and some visual effects.

Reading into the story was interesting, and that was about it. Seemed like it tried way to hard to hit you with jump scares through the atmosphere, with not much making you feel a threat. Seemed more like a walking simulator rather than really understanding as to why the ritual took place.

They DID go to the trouble of hiring live people unless there's a video library in front of green screen. And there WERE some grisly scenes that were well-placed and a few environments that were atmospheric (when they weren't cloaked in shadow, that is). Mayhap the devs will evolve.

I always have to give a nod to the developers for their hard work and creativity. Not everyone can make video games. This game was enjoyable and I love seeing Cju jump and get raddled, which he did.

Yeah this is a bad game (with so many flaws I can't even begin to number them here), but you made this entertaining enough Chris ;) I wouldn't call this terrible, though I don't exactly know why... There are flashes of interesting ideas here and there, and some sections do work a bit better than the rest of the game, as Chris said.

Interesting game but I found the news article about Miss Monroe interesting. Either the former owners collected old news papers or some of the press was a couple of decades late to publish the story in their paper, since the first journal entry discovered in the game was dated in 1998 ( a happy year for the young gamer that I was very excited for the release of Parasite Eve after seeing the trailer.)

I perfectly understand now why the daughter ripped her heart out. She realized she's in a bad game. And are those jumpscare hands in 13:47 taken from Phasmophobia? 😐 The general premise for what this game's trying to tell looked interesting..... but the execution was very very poor. I find myself watching blankly at the screen while all the supposed jumpscares passes through, and then their audio abruptly cuts short as they suddenly disappear. And don't get me started on the writings on the floors and walls. X|

Dear Chris, I'm sorry you had to find out about Marilyn Monroe in a yellowed old newspaper while trying to avoid being ravaged by this very strange game's fun house-style jump scares; it must have been emotionally disastrous. Sensitive souls like yours should be shielded from such careless, reckless omissions, but you are a brave soul despite all and I know you weathered the setback well. Well, that happened. Qua the Big Question: was it Terrible or Not? ... reminds me of my feelings about the first Phasmagoria (The Game I Love To Hate), which was mechanically problematic -- and in several instances, thematically offensive -- _until_ the end which contained a pretty stellar (timed) maze chase and end-puzzle solve-under-threat that (very nearly) made the previous 'suffering' worth it. Here too, that last bit with your several sacrifices was pretty cool and would have made it closer to 'worth it', if only we had had some foundation that 1) this was indeed the father somewhat sooner than the final moment; 2) that said father had some kind of remorse that impelled him to sacrifice himself; 3) that "Satan" was some kind of actual force in play, since otherwise, why would you do that, no matter how guilty you felt? I will even discount the two *gigantic* "plot" holes: 1) how is this literal child (if Sarah's dad left when she was 6, her mother was hospitalized well before she was even a teen) taking "care" of her mother and no type of social service ever intervened?; and of course, *_the psychiatric institution_* saying, "her condition _worsened_ (so) *we discharged her* (!!!) (without supervision of any kind, except for her [possibly pre-] teen daughter who we may not even know exists, since she is not mentioned)". So the story was not only shallow, but actively failed at being deep, the mechanics were not bad (I liked that the candles burnt down, though they didn't give much light), the jumpscares were not necessarily effective, but were generally fun (I also liked the "Look behind you," trope/joke, when there was nothing actually there), the shock scares (killing the NPCs, the PC killing themself in bits and pieces) did work well, even though you had no choice, and the "puzzles" were garden-variety walking simulator level (encounter a locked door or keypad, find a random object [box, tape] that contains the key or code, open door and proceed). I mostly feel this was made by a young dev who doesn't have clear ideas about what makes a game fun, what makes a story engaging, or what makes scary in general. Good effort, though🙂. It's too cliche. CJU playing it makes it much more entertaining than the game on its own. Such as wanting to dual-wield Zippo lighters, then getting two more of it - quad-limb wield.
