The recruiting disparity between the SEC/Big Ten and the Big 12 is a significant factor that impacts the competitive landscape of college football. This disparity stems from various factors, including geographic advantages, financial resources, historical prestige, and media exposure, all of which contribute to the SEC and Big Ten's dominance in attracting top-tier talent.
Geographic Advantages
The SEC and Big Ten benefit from being located in regions that are hotbeds for high school football talent. The SEC, in particular, is situated in the Southeastern United States, a region renowned for producing elite football recruits. States like Texas, Florida, and Georgia consistently churn out top prospects, and the proximity of SEC schools to these talent-rich areas gives them a significant edge in recruiting. Similarly, the Big Ten, with its strong presence in the Midwest and expanding footprint into the East Coast, taps into fertile recruiting grounds in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. In contrast, the Big 12, while also benefiting from Texas, lacks the same breadth of access to diverse and densely populated recruiting territories.
Financial Resources
Financial disparities play a crucial role in recruiting. SEC and Big Ten programs often have larger athletic budgets compared to Big 12 schools, allowing them to invest more in facilities, coaching staff, and recruiting efforts. This financial muscle translates into state-of-the-art training facilities, expansive support staffs, and the ability to offer recruits top-notch resources and development opportunities. The allure of superior facilities and comprehensive support systems can heavily influence a recruit’s decision, putting the Big 12 at a disadvantage.
Media Exposure
Media exposure is another critical factor. The SEC and Big Ten benefit from lucrative television contracts and widespread media coverage, ensuring that their games are broadcast to large national audiences. This extensive exposure not only enhances the visibility of their programs but also provides recruits with the opportunity to showcase their talents on a big stage. The Big 12, despite having strong media partnerships, does not match the same level of national coverage and primetime slots, impacting its attractiveness to recruits seeking maximum visibility.
Conclusion
In summary, the recruiting disparity between the SEC/Big Ten and the Big 12 is driven by geographic advantages, financial resources, historical prestige, and media exposure. These factors collectively create a challenging environment for the Big 12 in attracting top-tier talent, ultimately influencing the competitive balance within college football. To bridge this gap, Big 12 programs need to invest in facilities, expand their recruiting reach, and leverage their unique strengths to attract and retain elite recruits.

WVU Hall of Fame coach Don Nehlen famously once said “I was flying over WV and was amazed by the beauty of the mountains and the trees. Then a flew over Ohio and saw nothing but housetops. It doesn’t take a smart man to know: where there’s housetops, there’s kids. Where there’s trees, there’s birds!” WVU is the winningest program to never win a championship. We may never win a national championship, but we will continue to do what it takes to win.

Exactly. There are only so many top teams in the SEC and big10. There are only so many positions on those teams. If you cannot make those teams is he saying they would rather go play for a Vanderbilt, Rutgers, northwestern Illinois….rather than a competitive big 12 team? Plus those bigger teams will take transfers that are grown men that have a couple years of experience in other programs over a freshman who might not ever make it. On top of that you have the chance of another transfer or 4/5 star replacing you the next season if you cannot make the team. Yes Georgia, Alabama, OSU, Michigan, UT, OU…..are going to get the 5 stars every year but as others have said there are 3 and lower end 4 stars who can play in the big 12 and go on to the NFL. I think the next round of teams that leave the acc of the big 12 can capture a few of the better programs it helps the conference get better tv deals in large markets like a Virginia, Pittsburgh, Louisville, North Carolina…. Also you need to realize with USC,UCLA, OU, UT heading to the SEC and big 10 the teams from last year have a better chance of finishing with 4-5 losses instead of 2 diminishing their chances of making the playoffs.

Look at the players who've made it to the next level like Mahomes, Brady, kelce, take your pick that are considered the best ever to play the position, but in college were 2 or 3 star recruits and considered irrelevant. Drake you don't have a very good understanding of WVU. First look at the map. WVU is closer to PA, OH and MD the majority of WV. Also due to the high cost of NJ colleges there's a huge percentage of NJ students and a very large NJ alumni base. There's a big alumni base in DC as well. Because of it's lower traditional tuition WVU is really a regional school particularly for PA and NJ then a WV centered school. Recruiting wise the rich Western PA grounds start 10 miles from campus. Pitts relative weakness helps here. WVU isn't stealing 5 stars from Ohio and Penn State but Pitt, Maryland, Rutgers that's different. If your the 4 or three star who will be playing behind a 5 star at Penn State WVU is a strong contender. Also there's a strong traditional pipeline to FL with the same logic. Obviously finding the undervalued players is key but outside of the blue bloods that how it always has been. WVU gets you on the field and develops you. WVu has done surprisingly well with NIL. Remember no pros in WV to throw money at. For WVU the portal is a real double edged sword. Those diamonds you polish can leave after you've invested in them. By the same token players aren't the only ones who aren't patient. Georgia can plug in star ready players from the portal instead of risking developing a kid. For a kid that's not a slam dunk it can be go to WVU develope then finish at Ohio State or go to Ohio State get replaced by a portal guy then finish at WVU. I think Brown in particular does a good job of selling what's he's got, a different atmosphere, a place to grow in a more "family" setting. Some kids want that so you sell what you got.

I agree West Virginia doesn't have the recruits that Florida does but Florida has never had any player as big as a threat as Randy Moss. Randy Moss was probably the biggest threat to ever play the game of football from high school college to the NFL had to be triple teamed at times not even Jerry Rice got that treatment. Double team yes but not triple team I don't remember that.

West Virginia is actually doing a pretty good job at recruiting right now. Im kind of shocked that we're getting players like a receiver and running back that has turned down other schools in the SEC and Big ten. We just signed a big name receiver out of Georgia and a running back has committed to West Virginia also which everyone wanted. And we have some pretty good quarterbacks which I think it could be some of the best we've ever had. If Neil Brown just gets better at coaching Alabama and Tennessee may want to cancel future games with WVU it could get nasty for them.

@@wetblanket1977 OK ST has boosters with crazy money and WVU is dead last in net revenue in the Conference because of all the travel. If we somehow have a bigger budget than OK St it would be due to the extra travel expenses . Either way we’re working with less. FACTS BRUH

One great thing for the Big 12 is football is a team sport very few positions are dominated by a great player maybe quarterbacks and receivers like if you get a Randy Moss or someone of that caliber yell it makes a difference but you don't see that very often. But let's remind everyone Marshall University a team that's never beat WVU beat Notre Dame a top program at home 2 years ago. Let's also not forget that Duke University a true basketball team beat the original dream team in a basketball game really bad it was so embarrassing for the dream team and they even had Michael magic and Larry Bird and many other Legends. And my point is you put all these great high school players on a team can they play together ?? Is there enough ball for everyone?? Can everyone stay healthy? Who's the backup of the quarterback on these teams? Egos will probably tell the backup to just go start at West Virginia or Kansas or TCU or Baylor or pitt or Georgia tech and be the star.

Florida is probably the worst football school in the sec or at least right in front of vandy

Coaches and recruits will go where they can win, right now all B12 schools can win, Mississippi State will never be able to win without a relegation league!!

Unfortunately, Brian Smith speaks the truth. Utah's just going to have to slum it in the B12 and run this league for as long we're stuck here. The Utes winning the B12 is a foregone conclusion, but need to make some noise in the CFP....Go Utes!!
