Mahomes get a yearly ankle injury every year I say keep on pushing for the one seat if it not gonna happen, then we take the foot off the pedal and rest starters, but this defense can’t keep letting teams score like they have. This is probably our best opportunity to get to the big game really hoping they don’t let Josh down and this office.

Something that I saw someone else point out is that Sean McDermott seems like he may have called plays in this game. I noticed him holding a play sheet, and seems like he was at the very least confirming play calls. To me, that makes perfect sense, as some of the defensive play calls seemed much more advanced and fitting than previous games where McDermott hasn't really impacted play calling. Specifically, the decision to blitz Benford and Elam just seemed like a McDermott call. Goff turns around to execute the fake handoff, the Lions left tackle sees Elam coming in on the blitz so he switches to the right side to pick him up, while Christian Benford comes tearing in unnoticed to give Goff a big ole hug. Did anyone else notice this??

@quinnjackson9252
@quinnjackson9252 Сағат бұрын
@@shawnhickman3512 I don't think he's gotten it right all season long. Most of it has been overshadowed by an insane offensive performance and individual defensive players stepping up, but some of the play calls on defense have just seemed weird to me, with even McDermott seeming a bit confused by them. A rookie defensive coordinator calling plays just seems like a bad idea to me, nothing against Babich, just due to experience. I hope that he calls plays the next three weeks to get experience, and for other teams to think its all him, but that McDermott sneakily switches to calling plays during playoffs. Some of the best offensive and defensive minds have a coordinator who helps with coaching and managing and game planning, but end up calling plays personally. I would feel more comfortable with the play calling in McDermott's hands, but am glad that Babich has gotten some good experience.

Good pod as always, but there is no way any body can say that anybody that played corner for the Bills these last 3 years deserved to keep Kaair Elam on the bench like he's been. We talkin bout Dane Jackson, who's on his way out the league. Douglas who doesn't have athleticism, and for most of his career has been a rotational corner. And Benford, who would only be a number 1 corner on Buffalo. As we seen this past Sunday, is always a liability in man, and until this year always gets hurt. This Elam situation is just one of the many hiccups for McDermott and his decision making

When McDermott gets a lead he plays soft too early and lets the opponent back into games. In recent years playoffs it seems McDermotts defense is far less aggressive as a whole but I hope past experience helps McDermott to not coach scared and do what’s been working all year
@kennyjames4679

Yes x1000. If you have a team on the ground, you beat them into the ground. Instead the bills ALWAYS back off and go into prevent defense and it often results in heart attacks for the fans, and sometimes agonizing late game defeats. McDermott learned to be more aggressive on 4th downs offensively, so maybe he will learn to be more aggressive on defense. More pass rush/blitzing and don't always do it out of a zone. Get in the offenses face and force them into mistakes don't hope they just make them on their own.

All conversations about which team or offense was better is an exercise in futility. With the rule changes, you may as well be talking about a different sport. In 1991, we were terrified that a linebacker would kill Jim Kelly every time he ran. In today's game, linebackers are terrified of roughing the passer penalties. In addition, you can't evaluate an offense without considering the team's defense. For example, the 2024 Rams would not have scored 44 points on the 1991 Bills, so the 1991 Bills were playing under very different circumstances.
@MrChristopoop
@MrChristopoop 11 сағат бұрын
@nealanthony3482, I whole heartedly agree. No one seems to realize, or remember for us older farts, that rules have evolved to make the offense a bit easier. There is a reason that running backs were so valued in the eighties and nineties. The defense could murder QB’s and receivers. There were innovative offense guys (air Coryell, June Jones and Mouse Davis, etc), so it is not just that offenses are so advanced now that scoring etc has gone up. Quarterbacks used to be having a great season when they had 25 plus TD’s and 3000 yards. Now that is close to average, and 3500 plus yards, and 30 plus TD’s are closer to marks of excellence.

He doesn’t play enough to get confidence so we don’t have to do that. They’re dropping the ball with Elam. His size and speed and instincts is good enough to let him play.

I started watching the Bills just post Kelly era, so I can't draw a meaningful comparison. Totally agree though that the game differences between the eras make it difficult. I think you would have to do more of a deep dive into the numbers - such as comparing average yards per game between the teams is not that great... but factoring in league average yards per game would be better, I think. For example, one year a team is +50 ypg over the average vs another teams +25 ypg. Don't know where you would get these numbers! And of course other factors...such as when the offense shuts it down in the 4rth because they have a 3 score lead, or not playing your starters in the last 2 games because you've wrapped up the seeding. You could spend a lot of time on this lol. All that said, myI feel this is the best offense I've known the Bills to have, and Josh Allen the most talented QB in football that I have seen. Guess we will all know when they win the super bowl this year :). Thanks Joe!

It IS the best Bills offense ever. I watched all the K-gun offenses. Loved them. Thurman made defenses look terrible. Andre Reed was like Khalil Shakir. Shakir might be better. James Lofton vs Amari Cooper might be an edge to James but it’s not a given. Don Bebee vs the rest of the Bills’ backups, I’d go with the current guys. Our guys have size, toughness, block well, great effort when they’re not getting the ball and they’ve been productive. This OL is better. TEs are better. Josh is better. Depth is better except at QB (Frank Reich is one of the best all-time QBs for the organization and was a backup, that QB room was solid and they definitely helped Jim be prepared, just as the current QB room does). Foot on the gas until they get the 1 seed or it’s clinched by KC.
@peterwilson4865

Shakir can't hold Reed's jock man. He's nowhere near as good. If Reed were in his prime in this offense, he would put up 1500+. and have 10+ tuddies. OL is good now, but 91 OL was definitely better too. TEs I agree. Lofton and Reed are each individually far better than the 2024 group. Allen is the thing that makes the 2024 offense better than the 1991 one.
@ericaures4734
@ericaures4734 13 сағат бұрын
@ I’m not going to knock Andre, he’s was a great player and is a great guy. However, he played 15 years in Buffalo and had two seasons where he had 1,300 yards. One season where he had 10 tuddies. He had great hands but Khalil has maybe the best hands in NFL history thus far in his very short career. I could only find reception percentages from 1992 onwards, but Andre caught 59% of his targets from 1992 - 1999 (link below). Khalil caught 86% last year and 80% thus far this year. Run after catch, both excellent. It’s early to say Khalil may be better but you can only project based upon his current production. Andre himself said that he needed to get better each year and build upon it. Khalil is still improving and he’s already shown unique abilities. I was a little disappointed in Andre in the Super Bowls. The OL in the early ‘90s was too small and got ran over by NFC East DLs in the Super Bowls. They performed very well in the AFC playoffs but it’s a big reason they lost 4 straight. However, the DL was a bigger reason, can’t have a 272 lb NT in a 3-4 defense, no matter how quick Jeff Wright was. www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/ReedAn00.htm

@@ericaures4734 when did any of the current receivers have 1300 yards? Your post is recency bias, and stats from the 90s are going to be lower than they are today because the game is different. Shakir is a great receiver and maybe he will end up being better than Reed but again, even with depressed stats from back in the 90s, shakir has not had a 1300 yard season. Allen is a better QB than Kelly, Kelly was a great QB, but Allen is god tier. The offensive line from the 90s team was far better than the current offensive line. Who on the current offensive line do you see going into the hall of fame? The current offensive line is much improved from last year and has potential to get even better but it's not as good as that 90s line. That team went to 4 straight super bowls for a reason, it was loaded with talent from top to bottom. This team has gone to 0 super bowls, again for a reason, relative to the rest of the league, the overall talent is not as great as you seem to think it is, especially on defense. I think this team has a lot of potential and hopefully it comes through in this years playoffs, but the disrespect for the 90s team that went to 4 straight super bowls is kind of disgusting.

@kennyjames4679 I love Shakir, but Shakir is playing in a completely different era where offense wasn't nearly as heavily favored as today with respect to the safety and targeting rules. You really can't compare the two in good faith. One is a first ballot HOFer and did so under much more difficult conditions to produce as he did. He retired at like #2/3 all time in receiving and since then he's dropped all the way down to 18th in a 20ish year span because of the modern rules implemented in the 2000s on. Shakir is on pace to barely get his first 1000 yard season in 17 reg season games. There's literally 0 comparison to be had.

Actions/words speak loudly with regards to Kaiir Elam. Sean, and the other coaches, for 3 years have not shown a ton of confidence in Kaiir. We don't know why, but that is the fact. On the other hand they have lifted Hamlin into being a starter, and have given Cam Lewis playing time. IMO Elam will continue to be a backup CB in 2025 - which is fine. We need backups.

You can't compare teams of today to teams of the early 90s. A great Qb year back then was like 28 TDs and 3200 yds. That 90s offense was more explosive than this offense and was more consistent in running the ball (stats might not show that but again, it was a different game back then so the stats might be misleading). Having said that, this offense has the potential to be better (and may already be better) because they have a michael jordan level player in Josh Allen and I think they have the potential to be more explosive with Cooper and Coleman growing into the offense. As it is, it's a very hard to stop offense with a QB that literally can do everything, a three headed monster at RB where they can do damage in the run and pass game and a nice mix of power and finesse, two very good to elite TEs, a great slot/possession receiver in shakir and now two good wideouts in Coleman and Cooper (they need to keep cooper, he's perfect for this team) and a good dirty work receiver in Hollins. Samuel still has a lot of potential too, I'm not sure why he hasn't produced more, I'm guessing its a mix of injuries and lack of opportunity (?). And the offensive line has shown a lot of improvement this season. If the defense can just pressure the QB a bit and get a few stops and turnovers every game (it doesn't need to be dominant or even top tier), this team will be tough to beat going forward. As a fan of football for over 40 years, enjoy having a QB like Josh Allen, its a rare thing, hopefully the bills take advantage of it. A true super bowl team dispatches the dumpster fire teams they will be playing the next three weeks and puts pressure on the chiefs to go 2-1 in their final three or the bills get home field for the playoffs. This is not the time for a 'let down' or choke game, think 'the playoffs start now'. If they don't get home field, it's not the end of the world, but home field would be a nice edge.

@JohnSmith-yc2cr often the first 20 offense plays are scripted, after that the game starts to develop into strategy. The adjustments made at half time often make it almost 2 different games. The position advantage after the half with the developed game plan is huge.

Both Steelers and Ravens have tough games yet so no telling who wins that division. Bills have lost games (including last week) where Allen and the offense could basically not have played better. Foolish to think they can get to and win a SB just based on Allen playing great.

The bills are locked into a top two seed there's zero chance they can fall to the three seed. Pittsburgh schedule is just too tough and there's no situation where we could lose all three of these games so Baltimore market could catch us. Also Pittsburgh is not going to beat Baltimore in Baltimore with all those injuries. We need to get the one seed if we want to avoid Baltimore in the second round.

Marv would only rest starters after we clinched home field advantage. I think the League is foolish to only have one team with a bye. They should go back to the old format for playoffs. I think they should also give all the playoff teams a week off between the playoffs and regular season and let the worst AFC team play the worst NFC team and the winner gets the first pick, although the NFLPA would probably not let that happen.

The Bills have not had a good offensive line since the 1990s. The Bills would constently score 24 points, even against good teams, with Tribisky and this offensive line. They would be at least 10 and 7 and likely 11 and 6 and still have ok chances during the playoffs and Superbowl.
@donkeybus
@donkeybus 11 сағат бұрын
I dont think so, without the off script plays that only Josh can make that seem to happen about every other drive, this team would be signifigantly worse. Add to that how differently defenses could play Tribisky (no threat to run) and the Bills receviers are much less open. Allen is making a decent roster much better because of his scrambling and throwing ability

@@donkeybus I had written a long reply where I talked about Josh's throw to Johnson (if you look at that throw you will see Kinkaid was open ten yards in front of Josh and Shakir was open 20 ish yards in front of him before he threw to Johnson, I made the point that those throws could have been made by the other QBs - with caveats that I am not making in this re-write). The post that looks like its off thread was another caveat I posted after. I am not sure why my other comment didn't post but the subsequent caveat did. Summing up that other comment I concluded that I still believe this BIlls offense would consistently score 24 points with Tribisky or White at QB and making this Bills team capable of winning playoff games or even the Superball with them at QB. Of course nobody wants to test my conclusion - not even me - but if it has to be tested that should be the expectation.
