Locked On Lakers

It was going to be a big Monday one way or another, but it went the wrong way for the Lakers. UConn head coach Dan Hurley will remain UConn head coach. He turned down an offer from the Lakers reported to be worth $70 million over six years.
That's a lot of money, no doubt, but was it the right offer for this situation? Or even close?
A very solid argument can be made the Lakers decided to play a hand that required them to go all in, to use the poker parlance, but were only willing to push in 75% of their chips. A move this bold required EVERYTHING to be bold, from the concept to the offer. Now maybe Hurley still would have said no-in the poker analogy, they go all in and still lose the hand-but how you play the hand matters, and just as critically, the downstream impact of losing out on Hurley would look a lot different.
What does this say about the way the Lakers operate? How much could this news impact the search that is now ongoing?
Does this make it harder for them to hire JJ Redick, if that's the next target? Does it make the job less appealing for Redick?
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: Hurley says "no thanks."
SEGMENT 2: Did the Lakers come with the right offer?
SEGMENT 3: What happens now?

What's frustrating Kam bros is yall and us follow guys like Shams and Woj like they know everything. We believed their hype on JJ and Hurley and seemingly they were both wrong. I don't think Hurley ever wanted the Laker job, he just wanted publicity and a raise, which he got via his friend Woj and Woj got to body slam Shams in return.

There is certainly a possibility that Hurley was truly just trying to leverage UConn, and that these talks were just a mechanism to get more money from them. I don't think that's the case, but I certainly acknowledge it's a possibility. But if that's what it was, it's really not a good look for the Lakers, either. It means they allowed themselves to get played in part at least because they didn't do proper due diligence. BK

This is just my perspective: Dan was comfortable in his current job but wanted more money. His calculations were; see if the Lakers would pay him 100m. If not use the publicity to get his current employer to increase his pay. Either way, the Lakers are an incompetent organisation. Questioned why it was even publicised when no terms had been agreed.

@@LockedOnLakers If Hurley was the one who leaked this or told his friend Woj (which I believe he did) to do him a solid and break this news seemingly out of nowhere, the Lakers would have no choice but to pursue it right? I mean Rob wouldn't say no to an interview even if he knew he had no chance. The narrative is Hurley was the Lakers pick from the beginning, right? told to everyone by Woj, Hurley's friend, yet they never got an interview before now? And it was never leaked til now? Sorry but I don't buy it. The one who comes out of all this smelling like a rose and seemingly gets everything he wanted is usually the one who dealt it, to use a fart analogy. I think Hurley played everyone and put the Lakers in a position to just deal with it. Cuz if they denied the meeting, they would get criticized by the media and fanbase for not meeting. Damned if they did or don't.

@@user-lc4xh9lh7o It was publicized by Woj, remember? Hurley's friend. We all followed Shams reporting like sheep before Woj's supposed bomb that JJ had the job in the bag. Now we collectively do a 180 and believe Woj's narrative that Hurley was numero uno the whole time? I know u and many believe if it was 100 mil that Hurley would have taken the job. I doubt it. WHy would a man leave a situation where he's loved by everyone, paid millions, has a successful team and a chance at history, take a job for a few more millions. Get taxed a few more millions, move to a state his family hates, to take a job that he will be under a spotlight, scrutinized by the media on a daily bases and preyed on by a vicious fanbase/ haha

Hey guys. Been thinking about this a lot over the last bit of time. So either the FO didn't understand that Hurley wasn't going to leave and they went all in for a guy that wouldn't or couldn't leave the EC, or they didn't do enough to get him to leave, OR he was going to leave and then met with them and realized that they were completely a mess. In any way you look at this, this is a total failure of imagination on account of our FO. Either they were incompetent in the room, incompetent in their research, or cheap, or a combination of all of the three. If they had any inclining they shouldn't have gone all in, but I think this is a failure of recognition of how the Lakers used to be viewed and how they are viewed. Jeanie once said that anyone that didn't want to play with Kobe was a loser. Well that isn't true. Other people won in different ways, and not with Kobe. The mentality of our Laker ____ doesn't stink and everyone should be begging us for the opportunity permeates through this organization. Not to mention there is absolutely no outside thinking or any descent in the room. The Lakers need to live in the now, but it starts with looking in the mirror without any filters on, and I don't think the FO can do that or even understands what that means. This is the ultimate in 2nd generation wealth. I want Jeanie to do well, but this is her failure. Her shame. She hired her friends and people she likes rather than people good at their jobs cuz she wants a nice environment, but winning isn't nice. Her only saving grace is that LeGM and Klutch came, however they took advantage of the old starlet and now have emptied her bank account and about to leave her with nothing. I wish this wasn't a 90s made for TV movie, but it is. And it is so predictable and sad. We talked about how bad Dolan was as the Knicks owner, but Jeanie gets a pass cuz of LeBron wanting to make movies.

The reason the optics are so bad on this is because we let Woj disclose the 6/70 immediately with the news of Hurley turning it down. Now any garden variety candidate is going to ask for the 6 years and have the leverage to get it. And LeBron is going to be insufferable if it's anyone but JJ. Losing out on Hurley plus having it go down like this is worse than the Westbrook trade. Pelinka just set back the Lakers for at least a decade.

idk if its just me, but it seems pretty obvious the lakers were never serious about JJ. im trying to find where the "pat riley" comparison came from and it says it got "leaked" from LA? look, the lakers might have some problems that seem a little concerning from the outside, but one thing they do very well is they rarely leak anything to the media Shams reported LA was zeroing in on JJ, and then 2 days later the Hurley news comes out, and today Woj said Lakers havent had a real meeting with JJ, also im pretty sure Woj and Pelinka are close. So i seriously doubt JJ is a real candidate unless hes the last option. lakers are actually good at keeping things in wraps from everyone. I personally felt like Hurley was gonna say no and i was right, now i believe LA will be fine and hire a fine or solid assistant as their coach

The biggest issue with anyone who takes the Lakers head coaching job is easy to see: Lebron and Klutch. Lebron has maybe 2 years left. And he wants a chance to win another title (which is NEVER going to happen BTW. The Lebron Era is over. He's just a stat-padder.) Lebron is always about Lebron. He plays for the back of his jersey. Always has. Always will. So, Lebron will do what he always does: use his influence to push Pelinka and Buss (who have no spine to stand up to Lebron or Klutch) to CONTINUE to mortgage the Lakers future for his own personal agenda and get rid of draft capital and young development talent to bring in Vets past their prime. Which is what got them into this mess in the first place. If I'm a coach, I would want TOTAL control of the team, from assistant coaches to the offensive and defensive systems to who the Lakers sign to who the Lakers draft (Bronny James, anyone???). But more than that I would want to have a core in place that I can build around. You can't build around Lebron; he'll be retired in a couple of years. You can't rebuild around AD; aside from last season, he can't stay healthy for a full season, he only shows up 1 out of every three games and he's never gonna be an alpha. And the rest of the roster is bad as well. So for me, it's easy to see why no one wants this job and thus, Pelinka and Buss will be so desperate to keep Lebron that he will do anything to please him and that means it's the worst case scenario: Reddick.

Godfather offers are nothing but sports erotica. The narrative is so dumb and shallow; thinking the perception of extremely overpaying for a person is better optics then overpaying for a person, especially when you suggest that whatever they offerd Hurley they would have to offer the next coach because they have the emotional IQ of a teenager. Projecting the your feelings onto other people is straight up fan-fiction level rhetoric that strips any agency in opportunity from the next possible candidate. Thinking like that is fantasy and shares no basis in reality with the real world. The people who truly opperate similar to what you're implying for these potential coaches are clincical sociopaths who are incapable of being a successful coach at the professional level. Name me one person who has turned down a coaching offer just because another person passed on the opportunity. But I get it, theres so much nuance to this process and the only thing people want to hear is humiliation cucking and hyperbole so get them clicks boys.
