The Lakers have already had a busy week, and it gets busier today, with Day 1 of the NBA Draft (that's a new thing). With all the talk of player development coming with the hiring of JJ Redick, as well as Rob Pelinka talking Monday about the challenges of making trades in the new CBA, it does seem like a strong possibility that the Lakers use the pick.
With that in mind, where should they be focused? On the best player available, regardless of position? Trying to fill a specific need or skill set? Is there a way to align those things in a constructive way, where, say the guys that really do make the most sense happen to fill some positional/roster needs? Like a true wing? A real center?
While this draft isn't considered all that impressive at the top, there does seem to be a good amount of depth available, meaning teams like the Lakers who are drafting in the middle might have a better chance to get an impact player than they otherwise might. It's a big year for scouting, because the variance in draft rankings across different teams in the league could be pretty vast. So what should the Lakers do?
To break it down, Mike Garcia (@canyondriver) joins the show. He's quickly become a favorite for draft-curious Lakers fans, and has some great insight to offer about what the Lakers should do tonight. We walk through many of the names associated with LA at 17, and then a few of his favorites that could be available. Want a big? He's got some names. A wing? He's got you covered. In the second round, some projections have Bronny James going to the Lakers at 55. Many people think this is more a novelty act than any meaningful basketball move.
Mike explains why he'd be thrilled to get Bronny at that spot.
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky with Mike Garcia
SEGMENT 1: It's Draft day! What should the Lakers do with their pick?
SEGMENT 2: Scouting reports on players that could be around at 17.
SEGMENT 3: More scouting reports, plus talking Bronny.

I think the biggest reason why players in the draft are missed. They are evaluated from their play in college or in tryouts. It is completely different playing in the NBA. Good players rise to the top, but majority of them fail. It is very hard to pick the right player.

Da Silva is basically another Rui, maybe more of a shooter, but we’ve got 5 players who naturally play at PF already. I think the biggest hint from the front office was from the regular season. They want size and athleticism at every position.

Saying Bronny should be a projected mid to late 1st is laughable to me. He clearly has some development that’s needed unlike some of the other mid first players that actually produced in college

Klintman is from Sweden (not Switzerland). The opportunity to rep basketball-wise from over here is so rare so can’t afford any misconceptions 😂. Love the show and have listened since a couple of years back 🙌

hopeful that the Lakers can have another pick before their 17th pick so they can have a center and get da Silva for 17th pick. da Silva is like a better Kuzma. imagine Rui, Lebron as a point guard and da Silva + Davis and a center

The thing that made the 2020 Lakers so dangerous was their ability to be versatile. They could go big and compete. They could go small and compete. That's what they should make their goals.

@socalgolf9978 Probably won't. Hopefully the draft team and Reddick told Pelinka to go to one room and they're in another with the real pick.

They do. I don’t. Rusty said it best in his comment. Personally I think he’ll see himself played off the court, he needs a system built around him for this to work.

There are only 450 professional NBA players. If Bronny has to rely on his dad to become one of them, I'm sure he wouldn't put up much of a fuss.

Here's a true answer to your question about NBA ready. Originally, it meant a player whose body was built to compete in the NBA physically. Of course, people are free to add to the definition, but originally, that's what it meant. You don't know a person mental going into the NBA. There would be no Summer League, lol 💜💛

In the meantime, JJ is already involved in a controversy (he said, she said, racial thing). After the F-bombs, Rob is now having a full blown meltdown and looking over the contract to see if he put an escape clause in. Jeanie is being consoled by her clown husband and Linda is telling Kurt “see”.

I would love to win another championship and draft the dude who can help us do that, BUT____I also can't resist "the story" of bronny james being on the team and there "ain't no way" we get him at 55 so that means we gotta take him at "17"____and if we do I won't be mad....
