Think tire chains are a better idea thank lockers? Check out this video we made comparing them on the same trail kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIDVpWyigtdoerMsi=-gj23PK801ghjI3H

People underestimate the benefits of locking the dif. It's more than hanging a tire. There's the advantage of all tires moving the same speed so you can tiptoe the edge of traction. I actually have had people that base their opinions on absolutely nothing try to tell me that lockers can't help your braking traction.

I live in the Midwest and we also deal with mud, snow, ice and hills. I also drive a ZJ but mine is a 96 with the 4.0L 6. I like having the rear locked but don't like the front locked. I prefer to have the stearability in nasty stuff especially on hillsides in the slick. Nothing worse than being on a side slant and both steer wheels break loose and the front end dives downhill. I have my rear locked and the front open. I tend to run pretty aggressive mud and snow tires and do have a set of chains for my 31's that I only use when absolutely necessary and if I am by myself. We try to run the buddy system for safety but all my relatives have 4x4's

@@desertdan100 I have a Detroit in the rear and a lockrite in the front so I know what you mean. Ideally I'd change the front to an ARB but until then I just leave the driver's side hub unlocked if there's any chance of the front diving.

One of the first mods I did was lockers and a regear. Interestingly, I went with lockers on an economic basis of being able to drive slower to avoid breaking things. Momentum for everything = broken parts in the middle of no where. I only use my lockers when I need them to avoid driveline and tire wear.

I have a rear locker on my 2500HD snow plowing truck. That works most of the time and still allows good steering. When it is icy, I add crossbar chains and then can go just about anywhere. A front locker would add more traction, but makes it somewhat harder to maneuver the plow in tight places.

Yes and no depending on how much off roading you do. I have the BLD system on my wrangler with no locker and i find it can do 90% of what i ask for. Similar systems are on other brands like the a-trac that can be enough for some people. But for sure if you are doing any serious offroading having lockers is very nice.

JKUR. Justified the cost to the wife by explaining the benefits of lockers if I get in to an issue camping with the kids. Though I don’t wheel much beyond the easy capacity of my Jeep, I have gotten in to issues with ice on trails where without lockers, we’d of been stuck. She is glad it was money well spent. It’s that whole better to have it and not needed than need it and not have it thing.

@@countryslickerofficial unfortunately I think lockers may be a thing of the past. I say that because they have been around for decades yet so many manufacturers are opting for electronic braking to try to mimic lockers and limit slip. Lockers are generally a little rough and abusive. The inexperienced may even think their truck was broken when they experience lockers for the first time. Look at automatic transmissions, firm shifts are best for them but people expect a smooth shift so they get a smooth shift that wears stuff out.

I like the comparisons, and how you showed the differences. The drone perspectives are awesome too. I fly my Mini 2 as much as possible, even when I'm working, and use my dash-cam when I'm out in my rig. My front and rear ARB's have taken me into and out of many kick-ass places. In my 1st vid I didn't need them as my 424 to 1 t case got me and my '89 Geo Tracker up that steep bugger. But the 2nd vid the lockers got me up...till I got high centered. Then it was time for the Hi-Lift. Oh yeh, I stabbed a Suzuki Aereo SX 2.3 under the hood, and a 4 1/2" suspension lift. It rips! (I misunderstood what you said when you said to share what fav vid was. So I shared one of my own fav vids. In my edit, my fav vid of yours is the vid where the two jeeps are compared. WJ vs JK. I'm in Northern Idaho, U.S.) Thanks for sharing, and the invite. Wallace kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJmQc6eddq6mkNk 2nd vid. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4LUmWh4gbKJecU

Hearty greetings from the beautiful high deserts and forests of Idaho. I Really like your Country Slicker logo and the drone trick. I don't have a drone and have always wondered how much of a payload they can carry. I noticed the downwash is inflating the bag and pushing down against the drone's efforts to rise. If you collapsed the shopping bag around the cell phone and tied a half-hitch knot in the handles then the bag can't inflate and it would carry the payload much better and easier. "If mama ain't happy, nobody's happy." Always check-in at the home front LOL... 🙂

Yup, there are times when an open diff is definitely better, and times when a locked is really the only good option. I've settled on OX lockers after having used different ones over the years. While you can set them up to activate by air or electronically, I really liked the all mechanical/cable option, plus the "plug" you can put in the diff where your shift mechanism enters the cover that keeps it locked if your air/electric/cable system fails, so you can still get back to pavement.

what vehicle did u install the ox cable locker on ? did you put them in front and rear ? I am leaning towards the ox lockers front and rear on tj and xj because they are so simple. I like the fact that you do not need to pull your carrier and gears to fix an air leak (if one occurs), and like the idea of the "drive-a-way plug" as a backup since i solo wheel with my family. i'm not sure if i want to use cables or air actuators for my xj crawler.?.. but i am thinking i might need to go with air actuators for my tj, cause of the tight packaging and possibly too many sharp bends.?..

buddy of mine did an Aux locker in his TJ and could't believe the difference it made in the winter time ice fishing or out on the trail and just having an LSD up front, 3" lift on on 33" A/T's and a nice warn witch mounted up front that i never saw used in 10 yrs, funny people use to think he had an extra transfer case looking at the extra lever for the Aux,👍 I am still amazed at where we could go in that thing to this day

Yes, in thin snow like this, chains digging down really help. I noticed the tires didn't have sipes, which is helpful with the other technique of driving on the snow surface.

Hi Country Slicker, watching from South West Montana. Love the ZJs, the footage and music, great production! I own 3 ZJs, an Orvis, a 5.9 and a Limited. The limited has a 4.5” long bar lift on 35s with TruTrac in front and ARB in the back. The 5.9 is stock and i love your buddy’s lifted 5.9. Kind of bitter sweet though as i hate to modify the 5.9. My son has two ZJs, a Laredo and a 5.9. Thanks again.
