Lockhart Basin on Large Bikes - Utah BDR pt. 2

Ed, Pete and I on Lockhart Basin. We are all on KTM 790 / 890 advs. This section was very fun... a couple parts are not easy. Brent met us at the end and we continued to Moab.

Ian is a *fantastic* video editor. He combined footage from 3 different GoPros to create a video that tells the story in a way that makes you feel like you were there. Great job guys my hats off to ya. They didn't make it look easy, they make it look realistic, I'm frustrated, exhausted, and sick of being on the trail and I'm not really even there. Picking up 400lb bike 20 times a day sucks. Notice how more and more stuff was broken as the video progresses, broken mirror etc. That's no kidding adventure. Glad no one got hurt or stranded.

I'm an old motorcyclist who discovered Moab and southern Utah back in the 70s, I never did Lockhart Basin although I traced it out on Google Earth about 10 years ago. This was a real treat to see it from a well ridden motorcycle, thank you for your effort and for posting.

I love it! Using these bikes the way they were meant to be used. The terrain looked fun until around 11:00, then it looked taxing. Then around 16:00 it looks no fun at all, the kind of thing you do because you have absolutely no choice. I need a couple more years of riding before I try stuff like that.

I'm the guy in the black & turquoise suit, and my POV is the one with the helmet visor at the bottom of the shot. I race on the weekends but when I'm on my dual sport or adventure bike it's time to relax and enjoy the sights ,just my two cents. Also I don't want to get hurt a long ways from a hospital and ruin our trip.

True even really good riders can make mistakes. When Shit happens and you are a helicopter ride away from help you might want to rethink the pace. Everyone on the trip loses. Also when riding by Vehicles best to chop the throttle not to roost them with rocks. We all need to be respectful of others on the trail or we all lose.

Interesting, It seems you need to Bunny Hop those big bikes more than dirt bikes because of the weight. Loading the suspension and then getting it light over an obstacle is important. That was a hard ride on those big bikes, well done.

What a ride! Great video/editing. Looks like a strong group on well set up KTM’s. Couple questions; 1. How many miles/hours was the ‘tough section’ of Lockhart? 2. Was it ‘worth it’ using big bike vs say a dual sport? 3. Any other tips/thoughts/words of advise? Thank you.

Lockhart took about half a day, the tough sections are sprinkled throughout. For us the big bikes were perfect as this was a short part of a 1600 mile ride, mostly fire road. My advice is to be realistic about what you're comfortable doing on the bike you choose, and if you can do it over and over all day safely. By default I'd advise anyone to use a dual sport instead!

I had a 790, then switched to a 701, then back to an 890. The 701 was better in two scenarios: Solo adventuring where it's much easier to pick up by yourself, and deep sand. In every other circumstance the 890 is more fun and just as capable/maybe more capable.

Bought a new KLR thinking I would do a lot of back country riding. As an old desert racer, I thought it woulden't be any problem. Boy was I wrong! Theres a big difference in riding a 220 pound dirt bike and a 500 pound fat pig.

This old desert racer knows that my 1983 Yamaha IT490K ring ding (290lbs wet) would have made easy work of this terrain. Trying to ride these boat anchor 4-stroke "Adventure" bikes in this terrain - soon turns them into "Nightmare" bikes! As shown here. They are just too heavy and ungainly. 500 pound fat pigs is right Glade. LOL And they lack the old 2-strokes instant powerful throttle response. And on your IT you would be waiting hours for these poor worn-out guys to catch up with you. Been there -Done that! If Yamaha released the IT series of 2-strokes Enduros again today - dealers could not sell them fast enough! And to think they sold for US$2,249. Every winter - $200 for an engine overhaul!

But the suspension would not handle carrying luggage at anywhere near this speed. And if we weren't carrying luggage, we would have been on modern dual sport bikes instead! Glad you enjoyed your old bikes but you're looking at them through rose colored glasses. We are also desert racers - the capability of these new KTM 790/890 ADV bikes is astonishing.

@@therealturbofanisme If you are carrying "luggage" you are not on a dirt bike! BTW, A KTM 890 is twice the engine capacity of the old IT. And twice as heavy. Can you desert race an KTM 890? As a long time mechanic at a KTM dealership, I've ridden all these modern Adventure bikes my man. Without luggage, I'd race any of these modern fat elephants on my old IT490! Take care

Not sure what you're on about - so i should have left all the gear at home and be riding a 40 year old bike, THEN you'd be impressed? Sure let me just talk my buddies into going hungry and camping without any gear. The literal point of this is to explore difficult terrain on multi-day trips. Your old IT literally won't do that. This is progress. Yes, you can desert race an 890. There's a whole class for adventure bikes at most big desert races. You've "ridden" these bikes yet have no idea what they're capable of, despite video proof. Your points don't make any sense, man.

Is this the main trail, or an alternate advanced route? I am on the BDR website but the map is not showing any advanced sections. If it is the main this is like 200% harder than the WABDR

This is an optional expert route on the Utah BDR, and it's the hardest BDR section of all I think

They do it if you catch the engine on a bump at just the wrong RPM/point in the engine's rotation. My 790 did it, and my 890 did it here plenty (i was the one that shouted fuck really loud while dragging my bike off the rock). Slipping the clutch more would reduce flame outs.

@@therealturbofanisme WAIT!!!!! My 790 did that once on a very steep and steppy climb. But I knew what it was and I fixed it. The sidestand tends to move when the bike experiences extreme g-forces, like when you’re hitting a big rock or dropping into a ditch etc. If that sidestand moves - swings just a little bit - the engine gets shut off because it thinks the stand is down. The solution was to buy a sidestand switch eliminator dongle (gets installed at a connectors under the tank) and the issue was solved for good. Is it possible you were experiencing the same problem?

@@Colorado-Tinkering i don't think so, none of these bumps were hard enough. Much bigger drops, dips, jumps and no flame out, can't imagine these low speed bumps could move the kickstand enough. Every bike I've owned flames out - my 701, my 450, etc. I hate abusing the clutch so when you run the revs that low it just happens sometimes.
