My late cousin, William D. Smith worked most of his life for Lockheed. Early in his career, he worked as a mechanic stationed for 6 months in Antarctica, supporting the C-130s that flew there. By the time he retired, he was in charge of all C-130 sales except to the US government. 30+ years ago, he gave me a tour through the plant at Marietta, GA where both the C-130s and C-5s were built. Amazing place.

I flew in a Herky bird from William's Field to Plateau Station in late December, 1966. We stopped off at the Pole going and coming. Have absolutely no idea of the time from go to woah. The crew were very friendly and had me up in the control cockpit for some time during the out flight. The Yanks were always very good neighbours to we Kiwis at Scott Base. I reciprocated by taking various guys out for dog sledge rides during the Autumn and Spring. Good times and good friends.

Cool intro! This is how John Carpenter's "The Thing" started! I'm guessing this film was made around 1960.

Wow! I love this stuff... I'm Canadian, living in Canada. I spent several years in the Canadian North, much like Antarctica. I know too well the temperatures encountered, but nowhere near those of Vostok Station and other locations... I may never see Antarctica in my life time but would love to and even spend a winter at the South Pole... I am no stranger to Cold and Isolation. :-) If they ever have a seat on a plane... Pick Me... lol

The sign at Scott Base 12:20, reminds me of the one on Mash! Thanks to the C 130! Does it all from cargo to gunship!

The biggest problem with workning on the south pole is fact that one needs to tape Velcro on the all shoes soles.

My son is a Master Sargent loadmaster on a C5 Galaxy. I'm always joking whenever he goes on a mission that I know he's in Antarctica ☠ Now I'm sure! 🇺🇸🙊

3:24 Nansen bottle. 4:27 Magnatometer. 12:11 I am surprised that Christchurch is not listed. Christchurch is the jump off point heading for most places on the Antarctic. For a bit of humor I suppose the North Pole should have been listed.

I saw a C-130 (J type?) from New York's Air Natl. Guard while at Oshkosh with skis and it was impressive!

Nope no J, it is a modified H-model with an NP-2000 8 bladed prop!
