Thank you for posting this. I spent all day trying to figure mine out. A little constructive criticism...I wish you would have shown exactly how you got the ring in and out instead of a long view of the back of your shoulder.

If your careful after removing the ring you can use a little compressed air to let the piston push out the gland nut. You need to be careful as I have seen others send the piston flying to the ground due to the air pressure. If you an support the entire extended cylinder on the bench and then bump air into it and the gland usually pops out uneventfully. The gland has a seal ring between the outer tube and the gland to prevent oil bleeding by it.

The one I worked on bud just lift the wire end and turn the end with a Pipe wrench the wire will turn with the end do one revolution , Just reverse when installing .
@knunne112 жыл бұрын
The seal ring causes the gland to resist coming out and is the reason for the need to use air method.

I had the guy at the hydraulic shop show me how to get it out. It's a learning process for sure.

The reason the wire wasn't moving with the cap is because it was undersized. You don't even have to pry the edge up, you just turn the cap, with a screwdriver under, and it will self extract. If, it's properly sized.
@rpeek4 жыл бұрын
I see.
@lt43243 жыл бұрын
the reason it did not turn with the cap is because the retaining wire was broken or has "straightened out" slipping out of the hole it was meant to stay in the cap, has nothing to do with size! I work on these constantly and as a matter of fact working on one tomorrow for a customer. This is uncommon but still easily removed if you know how or in the repair industry.

I have seen these before on some lift trucks. I typically lift up the end slightly and either use a strap or chain wrench, (careful not to nick the piston tape it with masking tape put a rag around the tape and tape the rag) on the gland nut at the top. When you get the gland nut rotating it has enough friction on the ring to walk it out of the notch.Someone told me to use a roll pin punch on the holes on the gland nut like a lever to rotate, but I always wind up using the strap or chain wrench.
@michaelstorm85784 жыл бұрын
It worked. Thanks for the advice.
@knunne14 жыл бұрын
@@michaelstorm8578 I am glad it worked for you too! I can't take credit for the method, it was shown to me 45 years ago by older mechanic name Tony Grapnik when I was a young tech. Tony used to tell me not to lay on the concrete use a piece of cardboard or I would get arthritis, he was right about that too! Tony always had a better way to accomplish something that otherwise was a pain in the butt.

On this one the pin had come out of the dowell hole, so it took a bit more struggling to pull it out. Should get a new one with the seal kit.
@dcain328105 жыл бұрын
If you can see how deep the hole is, and as long as you're careful don't be afraid to drill a new hole and use a pin punch to bend the pin back down

Once you figure out how to get 'em in and out they ain't too bad. Just don't twist that lid and bend the pin so it don't fit in the hole anymore, like I did.

think you what to remove the other end of that ring!! that end locks the ring in, it could be seating in the grove about over an 1/8 inch! it will be a lot easyer to remove the ring. all you need is a sharp pin to lift out of the groove. than turn the end cap and walk it out. good luck.
@dcain328105 жыл бұрын
It's called a marion ring, can be very difficult to remove. There are several ways to do so. Only reason for it is ease of manufacturing. Easier to cut a groove than a bunch of threads. Quicker and cheaper too

The way I was shown is just lift the loop or hook on the end to guide it out the hole and turn the seal guard clockwise to remove it and counter CW to put it back .

My cylinder and locking ring groove look just like that and the end cap just pushes in it is not threaded, you must get under the end of the clip I used a larger jewelers screwdriver narrower than the clip, then use the proper tool or pipe wrench and unscrew direction the cap this pushed the clip right out of mine

I would like to know who makes this cylinder? I can't find anything on my cylinder no part numbers or anything. O and if u lift up on the flat side of the ring and turn it, it comes right out....
@rpeek7 жыл бұрын
It's a Rotary 6k lb lift cylinder. I don't think Rotary is in business anymore. I eventually found a new old stock one and bought it. Still got the old one but it leaks by on the inside due to rust inside the cylinder. It's pretty hard to get that pin out . Out have to lift one end and turn the cylinder to get it in and out. I hope I never have to do another one.

If you search my vids using the word "rotary" you'll find a bunch of videos on this cylinder. I think the numbers are in the comments on one of the videos..

Excuse my laughter, you are trying so hard to remove the wrong end of the Marrion ring. That end is bent 90deg and simply locates in a hole to drive the wire while turning the cap. If you go to the other end of the wire (just a few degrees away) you will be able to gently lift the regular end with a small screwdriver while rotating the cap and watch the ring miraculously self extract. Thank you, your welcome 😅

If you bend or break the sticking up end tag it is a bitch to remove the lock wire. In theory if you get hold of the tag and pull it as you turn the seal block in the reverse direction to that, that the lockwire was installed you shall roll it out of the hole in the cylinder wall. Works about 1 out of 3 times it seems to me. If it rusts up in there sometimes your options are limited. Mainly used on North American stuff, Mexican and South American labor must be cheap! It is a really stupid system.
