I asked him if he was carrying and he said no because it was too large for an everyday carry. When he asked where my little 38 was, I told him that I had my hand on it. Who is better protected, a man with a big gun at home, or the man who can produce his firearm in less than 1 second?

If S&W was smart and wanted to increase their market share, they would offer the 637, 638, and 438 without the useless key lock frame. The Bodyguard style revolvers like the Hammer shrouded Colts like the Agent give you a reduced recoil pulse 17:39 pulse that is more directed straight back than up , resulting in faster follow up shots

BRAVO, Dick, on another excellent video. In fact, this video truly resonates with me, because (and I’m 78, a retried senior military officer and the son of an FBI SA) I grew up shooting Smith.38 Special revolvers AND I have also spent many many hours evaluating this overall question. My conclusions are nearly identical to yours, and my snubbie (a Ruger SP-101, with a 2.25 inch barrel, chambered .357 magnum) is very often my EDC (I live in a nice, low crime, suburban community and - while horrific felonies can happen anywhere - the probability in my neighbor is comparatively small). Why have I opted for frequent snubbie carry? Here’s my rational: 1. The firearm: I never load my SP-101 with .357 magnums, but the additional weight of an all-stainless .357 magnum revolver attenuates recoil, the extra barrel length (.375 of an inch longer than J Frames) provides increased muzzle velocity and sight radius, and the .357 SP-101 is generally acknowledged as an accurate, ultra-reliable/durable “tank” (it is really an incredibly solid design, which clearly has some additional weight and size, but which (imho) thereby makes it incredibly durable, reliable, accurate and easy to fire rapidly). Yet, it is not difficult to conceal (although I would not classify it as a “pocket snubbie”). 2. Capacity: The most successful lawful defensive engagement is one that is avoided. Accordingly, I unfailingly use common sense and situational awareness (no 0230 ATM visits, no 0300 gasoline refills, no driving through sketchy parts of nearby cities at 0330, and so forth). The fact is most thugs, addicts, gangbangers, and other petty/unskilled criminals have essential zero firearms knowledge, proficiency or experience. They prey on those they believe likely are “easy victims“ . . . and the mere no-shots-fired display of a weapon by an armed citizen very often causes them to flee (psychological stops). Furthermore, at short ranges I feel very confident that I can near-unfailingly get torso and thorax hits very frequently (if, Lord forbid, I am ever compelled to do so). Therefore, five rounds is almost assuredly sufficient (and I carry two six round speed strips, in the most improbably event they are ever needed). 3. Ammunition: I have long believed that the FBI/Saint Louis/Chicago round remains highly viable, despite its age. My individual choice is a Buffalo Bore, .38 +P, 158 gain, LSWCHP, with a very soft lead alloy projectile (to enhance expansion) and a gas check (to prevent barrel leading). In my experience, this factually is a “.357 magnum light” (Buffalo Bore indicates a 1040 FPS muzzle velocity, from a two inch barrel . . . and a .355 inch diameter, 158 grain bullet, moving at 1000+ FPS clearly is a serious defensive load). To conclude, without any question the foregoing “system” is aged . . . no uber-capacity, no mounted light, no 1913 rail, no optics, no latest bullet technology, and no service-sized autoloader for increased velocity and long-range accuracy. However, tools - specifically including firearms - are designed for particular missions. One should not hunt moose with a snubbie, nor carry a .460 S&W magnum X-Frame to lawfully deter some ignorant punk-felon. However, I emphasize that this “system” fits MY unique requirements; I’m not a deputy in nearly-uninhabited New Mexico county with help 30+ minutes away, nor do I live and/or work in a high crime urban area. Individuals who need others types of sidearms certainly should carry them, however, they should not criticize other peoples’ selections - including snubbies.

@@nicolaalberti7736 Good question, and the answer is yes. Some years ago, I went to CVS and (feeling like a fool) I asked a young lady if they had a red or an orange nail polish that was somewhat iridescent. They did, and I have used it on the rear of several blade front-sights. I don’t want to mislead you, this does NOT make the sight luminescent. But (imho) it significantly improves the factory sight (including during daylight), it’s very easy to apply, it’s long lasting, and it’s dirt cheap.
@roykiefer77137 күн бұрын
@@nicolaalberti7736 I applied two or three coats of iridescent red nail polish to the rear of the front blade sight. This makes it FAR more visible (day and night), but it certainly is not luminescent. However, it is very durable, easy to apply, beneficial, and entirely inexpensive. In addition, I exchanged the factory stocks for Crimson Trace laser grips; they’re terrific, actually more ergonomic for my hands than are Ruger’s factory stocks, and they are automatically activated when I grip the revolver. Therefore, even under the darkest circumstances - and given this is a short-range defensive weapon - I’ll have a bright red laser dot on the felon’s chest. The Crimson Trace grips, however, are not comparable with some speed loaders, which is why I carry speed strips.

Lots of good chat here. I'm also one who still favors the "steel wheel". I own several snub revolvers, including my first, the Charter Arms Undercover I bought the day I got my badge back in 1987. Since then, four more Charter products have joined it, including my dad's Undercover, which, made in 1966, is as old as I am. I also have examples by Rossi, Smith and Wesson, and Taurus, that last one being an older stainless 85 with that very versatile three-inch barrel, a "poor man's SP-101". Also, one of those Charter Arms products is an old Undercoverette in .32SWL, a model mentioned in this video. It appears to have been made in around 1970-1971. These days, despite having acquired dozens of "more modern" carry options, I still almost exclusively carry a .38 on my belt. My "reload" for it, however, is actually a Kel-Tec P32 in a pocket, barely more to conceal than a pouch or speedloader of .38 ammunition. I also carry a spare magazine for the P32. Thanks for sharing.

What I love about snubbies is that they are ideal for pocket carry, which is the most discreet and IMO most comfortable way to carry, and those heavy DA triggers make them ideal for dry fire practice. If you can effectively handle the DA trigger from a snubby you can handle anything. I always wince when guys around my age and younger think of revolvers as some sort of important, but now obsolete relic from the past, sucks to be them. That being said, while I like the idea of a .357 snub, they are tough to shoot effectively, at least after the first shot. Yes, you get more power, but from a 2 inch barrel youre not getting all that much more than a pocket 9mm, especially when you factor in recoil. Im fine with a stout .38+p............another option would be the .327 fed mag, but keep in mind that even range for .327 is somewhat pricey.

Great video and info! I carried a S&W Model 60 as a backup for twenty years before I retired. After I retired in 1990, I noticed that S&W was making a stainless one with a 3" barrel in .357 and immediately bought one. I carry it in a coat or vest pocket in the winter and carry a Ruger LCP .22LR in a "sticky" holster in my pocket the rest of the time or even at the same time. I am a big fan of Crimson Trace laser sights and have them on most of my firearms. I am old, 82, practice a lot, and don't venture into bad areas or during bad hours. I also qualify for LEOSA every year. I have several Glock pistols and always have one with me in my vehicles. I do haul around a G20 when in the mountains in Idaho. Shot placement is a LOT more valuable than caliber or type of handgun. "It doesn't matter how fast it flies past".

However, I always carried either a Colt Detective Special two inch as a backup or an S&W J frame. I carried these revolvers in my left front pocket and worn out a few pocket holsters. I regret trading off the Colt. My last J frame, a 442, is laying on my desk right now. It shows a lot of holster wear. It is fitted with both a Tyler T grip and Herritt's shooting star grips. The only way I could control that light weight revolver. I qualify yearly ,LEOSA, and still use my 1911. I have no problem with carrying the 442 today. They will get the job done. If I knew I was going to a gunfight, I would bring a rifle and not get close enough to need a handgun.

In our hot, humid weather, many people use five shot or six shot .38 Special snubs or .380 pistols, but today, with the real threat of a terror attack, more like when than if, I myself pack full size and commander size pistols nothing less than a 9mm and favor bigger caliber guns. .38 Super, .357 SIG. .40, .45 AND 10MM. Yep carried the snubs and smaller auto loaders but today they are secondary. While I have other format pistols I'm an old school guy and go with a 1911 pistol. Comfortable with that weapon. If I used a .38 Special today, I'd favor a 3" myself. Magnum or big bore in a revolver. My most carried revolver S&W 629 PC 2.6" .44 Magnum and use Buffalo Bore 180 grain .44 Special JHP WITH .44 MAGNUM JHP in reserve. I recommend to friends carry spare ammo 2 reloads in single stack pistols and revolvers. That FBI 158 GR LSWCHP+P is my personal favorite in my .38 Special revolvers. GOOD REVIEW AND INFO AS USUAL.

My dad carries a Colt Agent just like yours. Post 1972 with Colt rubber grips. I had a 1966 Colt Detective Special that serves as my wife’s carry gun. And I’ve got them both loaded with Remington LHP 158 gr+P

I don't think that round performs very well out of short barrels. They never expand.
@classicgunstoday19725 күн бұрын
@ Dick Fairbairn in this video says that does. I personally have put LHP through my Detective Special and a 2 inch M10 years ago and they do reach expansion threshold. It has to do with how soft the bullet is. The softer the better. According to Massad Ayoob, Remington LHP +P are the softest and tend to expand the best out of both 4 and even 2 inch barrels. Winchester and Federal are good too from what I’m told. I plan on doing some videos on 2 inch tests in the near future. Buffalo Bore LHP +P out of a 2 inch barrel actually reaches up to 1000 fps (and Buffalo Bore are what they claim)

Started out in the profession as a CATM Instructor in the USAF carrying a S&W Model 15, 4". With 2 reloads in a pair of dump pouches that was only 18 rounds total and we carried ball ammo. That was not a lot to protect you. We trained a LOT and practiced even more. Worse yet, we were required to carry our reloads loose in the pouches. But early on, I found that speed strips fit in the pouches and since they were black, no one noticed if you had them or not.

@@lockloadwithdickfairburn-cr1jbHad a question regarding what carry gun you would recommend for a twenty year old about to turn 21, I've been considering purchasing a Gen 5 Glock 19 or a model 642, I don't know if I need the extra ammo, being in a dangerous city with some fairly serious criminals, I'll be carrying concealed IWB, I have an AR for home defense, so I wouldn't need to use my carry gun for that purpose.

I have done a ton of ballistics testing with 38 special. The absolute top dog is fed HSt 130gr (the one loaded like a wadcutter. Amazing expansion and great penetration. Its made for snub nosed revovlvers, you wont get any extra velocity when used in longer barells. The other one ive found is 110gr hornady htp polymer tip. So comfortable to shoot. That and im a proponent of wadcutters for self defense. Defintaely do not like ball ammo, its even worse perdoeming than 9mm ball. Pokes tiny little holes. Its got to be a flat point,, wadcutter, or hollowpoint. Those 158gr lead round nose are anemic. Had to shoot a skunk and 4 out of 5 hits and it kept on going... had the g 26 in the car with hst 9mm and hit it once at 35 yards. But thats just my expirence. I carry a g19 or g26 now that i sold the snubbie but i loved having something so small and light for summer or deep carry.

You bring up a valid point on lead bullets breaking their crimp in lightweight revolvers, I own a few of the S&W scandium/Titanium revolvers, both in 357 and 44 spl. they effectively become a kinetic bullet puller in the heavier bullet weights, even some 357s as light as 125 gr Great video!

A friend of mine and I had almost this exact conversation the other day. Back in my LEO days I went through a plethora of BUG/OD guns, but some of my favorites were S&W J-frames. A Model 60, a model 36, even a 30-1 in .32 S&W Long which was a blessing when my arthritis got terribly bad for a while before I retired. The latter was loaded with 115 gr hard cast lead flat points loaded by a now defunct company (I think Buffalo Bore's version is identical). A few years after retiring I joined some of my fellow retirees in a security gig for local medical facilities. They made a big deal about saying it was an "unarmed" job ... but mentioned that if one of us grizzled old 'tired LEOs wound up facing an armed threat, judicious marksmanship was appreciated. I have tried other arms, but a little 442 airweight in a pocket holster virtually disappears in a front pocket and I have two speedloaders (loaded 2-skip-3 for that fast load-two-and-reengage). I know it shoots to point of aim and that I can hit with it way farther out than I can probably ever justify so I am fine with it.

A S&W 442 with old school splinter grips absolutely disappears in a pocket or in an IWB and carries so easily you forget you’re wearing it. Surprisingly, the old school grips also make it point wherever your index finger is pointing. Hitting targets at anything from 0-15 yards becomes just easy. LSWCHP in soft lead at normal pressure is the perfect ammo for it. Check out Paul Harrel’s video on that ammo.

Unfortunately, many 3" revolvers today use the same short ejector rod as their 2" models to save tooling costs. The Taurus 856 and the Ruger LCR come to mind.
@williamryan91957 күн бұрын
Yeah. You have to adapt using a slap on the rod to pop the spent casings out. I always clean and lube my charge holes regularly to lessen the potential hangups when carry loose casings. I have moon clips that I use more often.

I’ve been daily carrying a firearm for decades - thankfully it’s been a waste of time - when I started carrying a PDW (Flux Raider) in my bag there was no longer any need for something more than a small wheelgun on-body. It’s analogous to moving my Leatherman to my bag when I started carrying a fixed blade left side of my waistline. I need to cut things all the time and maybe stab as a backup role, but I don’t need a wrench, wire cutters, bit driver, ferro rod, whistle, saw or sharpening grit very often (Leatherman Signal). Nice to have it if I need it, but my 938 or 442 will do its job as well as my fixed blade will in the disastrous event I need it. Didn’t know about the slug pulling out of the case though! I just found a Kimber K6S .357 at a pawn shop that I’m planning to work into rotation (once I get some practice time on trigger). Makes me wonder if I should just run 6x .38 and benefit from the extra cylinder length the .357 has to offer 🤔 Subbed and following!

There's not really all that much difference between the Detective Special and the current model Cobra in terms of size and weight, given the shrouded barrel as with the later DSs. And the new model's double-action trigger is usually superior, with less stacking.

I do, in all honesty carry a G23 because I'm older and don't give a care if somebody looks at me and wonders if I'm carrying a gun. I live in Texas and I'm a very amicable guy. So, I'm not presenting a threatening posture.
