In a reflection of what just about everything has become these days, it's not what something *IS* , it's what you *CALL* it. People will believe anything these days. That's why these manufacturers don't bother making things right. It's much easier to just call it something and rake in the sales.
@reverse_engineeredАй бұрын
It's especially prevalent when you have no way to prove otherwise. A locksmith or enthusiast can play with a lock and tell you how good it really is, but how would the average person know about the lock they buy and take home? If you never had a break in, does that mean it's good? If someone smashed it open with a hammer, does that mean it's bad? The vast majority of people have no way of knowing if it's actually working well. For those kinds of products, you'd usually have a body of experts who would offer reviews and advice, but aside from some activists on social media, meaningful reviews are almost nonexistent. Compare that to how many people review computer hardware, TVs, and vacuum cleaners. It also doesn't help that, like many other products, lock manufacturers just keep cycling through product numbers. Was last year's model 1768 bad? Well this is a model 1790 that looks the same. Is it better? Worse? The same with a different label? Just keep changing model numbers faster than the reviews come out and there will never be a review ready for the product that the buyer sees on the shelf.

I’ve figured out how to make a more pick-resistant lock, and it involves a shuttered keyway that has to be held open to reveal a second shuttered keyway. You need two keys and healthy wrists but it should make standard attacks nearly impossible. Depending on keyway positioning and spring tension for the initial lock, anyway. Lots of KZbin engineers have been trying to redesign the wheel to challenge you these days but I don’t think anyone’s thought of “just make the lock unlock a lock fivehead”

@reverse_engineeredАй бұрын
From experience, I agree. If it's a targeted attack, then people will take the effort to get through whatever, but if it's just a random theft, the most important thing is to be more of a pain than your neighbours. There's no point smashing car windows if some people leave their doors unlocked. You'll stop and think twice if you see a laptop or other expensive electronics out in plain sight. You're way more likely to check out a car or a shed that's dimly lit than one where you are brightly lit in an open area for everyone to see.

That was a good pick. Well done! You made it look super easy. But the way you were holding it made it look easier than probably would have been. Is there a, I don't know, a posture guide, for different locks and how to pick them from common positions where you'll find them? A door lock, you could just kneel. A padlock, you can usually pull up and look at. But you were holding that disc lock upside-down. What angle would you be holding yourself if that was on a garage door or storage locker?

So if there was a key with round middle part, this shutter had a small cut that would match round middle of key, but not allow head of key to pass, user would have to have key inside and shutter closed to open lock, that would provide quite a security in itself? Shutter when hitting middle of key would have it's pin align as well, so shutter would have to be in position of key, if it was full closed or open or broken off it would no longer allow to open lock.

No carrots were harmed during the making of this video. Will LPL ever demonstrate what tricks he can do with a carrot?!

Protip for everyone: Make a tiny roll of gaffer’s tape for your everyday carry. It’s very useful in general.

The only question I have is how much time will it take to pick when the lock is located in a real world situation? I believe the large job site tool box will offer a better challenge for the LPL. Still enjoy the feedback the LPL shares to challenge the manufacturers to make a better product. Thanks for sharing.
