Hi and thanks for all your work! Would you recommend locum SHO as a first job for someone with no NHS experience? I only have 3 years of experience in Romania (internal medicine and neurology).
@RoadToUK Жыл бұрын
No, as you aren't given much of an introduction to the system that way, nor do you typically receive any sort of support. You'd really need to ensure a good working environment before you embark on a locum job as your first role.

Very nice and informative video! I am an IMG from Brazil and currently in the UK for a PhD (research-based degree) in medicine, and applying for a part-time fellowship in an NHS hospital to conduct alongside my research work. The student visa puts a cap of 20h per week of work, but I still have availability of time to do 3-4 locums a month. Do you have an idea how I could do that in terms of right-to-work?

It's nothing that would keep you from working in the UK. You can mention it during your occupational health assessment so that reasonable adjustments can be made for you if necessary.

Still need to understand the hours and what's the cut off. If my 8 weeks rota is averaging 45 hours but, in week 2 i have 2 on calls and rest of the week off i.e. week 2 amounting to 26 hours, can I still do Locum in week 2 as I am allowed 48-52 hours work/week?
@RoadToUK3 жыл бұрын
Yes. When in doubt, your rota office will let you know if the hours are non-compliant. If your hospital uses an app to book locums, it will also inform you if you cannot book an extra shift due to too many hours.
@BK04083 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. But realistically how many hours of locum does a SHO get? Generally i mean. Of course it varies from place to place.
@RoadToUK3 жыл бұрын
There are weeks where you will have less hours that you can add to, and you can even locum on your days off. All you would need to do is make sure you don't go over your work time directive hours.
@BK04083 жыл бұрын
@@RoadToUK thanks. I actually meant availability of locum shifts. lets say i have 40 free hours in a month after considering all the rules of duty schedule. Even if i am willing to work for all those 40 hours, i won’t be able to find locum for all those hours right? Because locum must be available as well and there would be others too to get that spot i guess. For example, if you dont mind me asking, how many locum shifts you usually manage to get in a month?
@RoadToUK3 жыл бұрын
That would be hospital and specialty dependent to be honest. At our hospital, we can find medical locums every day if we tried, so it isn't impossible, but it does vary.

What’s the point of applying to the UK as an IMG, when it’s easier to enter the system directly as a UK medical student ? There’s so many medical schools in the UK to apply to, and some of them are ridiculously easy to enter as long you have a pulse (UCLAN, Brunel University London).

There’s no point locuming as a foundation year doctor or core trainee doctor . Sure, you make extra money in the short term, but those gains are minuscule in the long term, when you compare to the hourly rates of a fully qualified consultant. It is more practical to use your spare time to do research , build networks and enhance your clinical portfolio. This will be of a more beneficial use, when you are applying to speciality training after FY, or higher speciality training after CT. It’s silly to use your spare hours for locum work and risk not being accepted into an ideal speciality training position of your choice. You will then have to spend an extra year working as non-training clinical fellow before applying in the next application cycle, while your successful peers are already starting on their specialty training.
@RoadToUK3 жыл бұрын
You can locum and still build your portfolio. We did, as did many of our colleagues. What is silly is to expect people may not have expenses that may require them to locum, hence the information. And not everyone is concerned about getting into training or wanting to get to a consultant post in a flash.
