Today we talk about the John Deere 800, 800A, and 801 three point hitches. These where released with the model 50, 60, and 70 John Deeres and had very early features that are on the 3 points we know today. Let me know if you have used one of these hitches and THANK YOU for watching.

Good video. I use an 801 on my 60 and 70D all the time. I don't use any specially made top link adapter like yours, just a very long pin. The JD top link on each side of the implement top link, with a single long pin thru it all. I have them set up with pins and washers if needed to remove any side to side slip. Works really well, and really simple. I'd be careful having your bottom mounts reversed like that, it will make your implement weight rest further back then it normally would, taking weight off your front end. I'm glad you pointed it out, because it took me some research to figure out which way they were supposed to go!

I have an 800A hitch on a 1956 John Deere Model 70 Diesel. It would be interesting to see how the load and depth control on the 801 works. When plowing with a 4 x 14 moldboard plow with the 800A, it was a good idea to keep one hand on the Power-Trol lever when on uneven ground to keep the plow at the desired depth.

Good video. I have an 801 hitch on both a 60 and a 70 but never used the depth control. Would like to see how well it works.

You should do a video on the different types of power trols on the 2 cylinders, like how tractors sometimes came with none and had a plain back plate that the PTO went through, the early letter series had a simple up or down rock shaft (no fine control) on a foot pedal, then the later letter and number series had the one like on your 60 with the lever and hydraulic option, and then the even later ones had a hydraulic remote separate from the 3pt lever. I’m sure there could be more variations that I don’t know about, but it would make for a good video.

Important thing to note, powr-trol is a specific set of hydraulic systems for John Deere. What you describe with purely up or down on the rock shaft is the predecessor to powr-trol known as powr-lift.

I always thought that by adding 2 ears to a 3 point fast hitch to accommodate the upper arms would be a better solution because I could never find the correct part that bolted to a plow or blade.

I agree they are hard to find. The one I bought ended up not working because it was to ridged on the top 2 arms so I had to design one that let the 2 third link arms move. Thanks for watching 👍🏻

@@LocustMotorWorks I had an approximate 2” square block with a 13/16” hole through it that would act like the end of a typical top link. I had turned a chunk of 2” square steel down to fit the hole in the standard 801 cross piece and threaded the end for a 3/4” nut. Still ended up welding that block to the cross piece. This also extended the top link too long, I had to cut 4-6” out of the adjustable top arms. It worked but was never thrilled with the 801 hitch. I’m leaning towards a 620/630 or 720/730 gas or LP. I’m not a diesel mechanic but I’ve done plenty of work on gas 2 cylinders and 4020 LP.
