My Grandfather bought a JD G in 1949 which my father used from new until 1966 when he sold it. It changed ownership several times and was restored. 2 years ago my brother managed to buy it back. We live in New Zealand and John Deere has always been a respected quality tractor. The G has a sound all of it's own.

Granddad owned a 1951 G that had been bored .090 oversized and it had no problem pulling 3-16’s in any soil but in clay it would overheat. Wish I had it today. That tractor would really bark under a load. After dark the exhaust pipe would glow cherry red when plowing.

Grew up on a 52 G . Had to overhaul it a few times. It was bored out to max. It had power to pull a 5 bottom plow tried it with a neighbors plow to see if it would do it. Was very strong pulling tractor but very thirsty on gas.

My dad had an unstyled G. Like you said 4 speed and max of 6 mph. He had the hydraulics modified for a remote cylinder so we could pull a 10 ft wheel disc. It also used to run an Allis Chalmers model 90 combine. We had lots of mud one fall. The previous owner had steel wheels for the rear and spacers for the front wheels to give more clearance. It had cast rear centers and 36 inch rims. Those came off and the steel went on. I drove it 7 miles on steel pulling the model 90 with bomber tires on it. 6 mph was plenty fast for the steel. It was on gravel roads and every impact came right up through the seat It was a horse of a tractor. It also ran a one row Gehl ensilage cutter. It didn't start real well if you killed it when hot. That was a workout. We traded in JD AR for the G. The AR was so early it had the rod for oil pressure and was on steel when we got it somewhere around 1950. Been nice to still have them. They were out of date when traded and money was tight.

We have a 1945 GM and 1949 G. The 49 is my nephews pulling tractor. Its 6.5 bore 10 inch stroke. 13:1 compression. It made 143 horsepower on the pto dyno when we let off afraid to blow up the pto gears

We had 2 GW models when I was a kid back in the early60's. I was some where around 9 - 10 years old out driving one in the potato fields. I was on top of the world for a kid that age. That was back when everyone was expected to pitch in and help, no matter what it was. Had many fond memories of doing that!

I recall way back in the day I was probably 4-5 yo Dad had a 1950 G JohnDeere, he had gone to the Tractor Supply Co. and bought a “Power Block” and his Nephew installed it. But later he had to have a water pump installed to keep it from overheating!

Back in the early 1960's our neighbor had 3 JD G's all stylized. Believe 2 had narrow front ends but the 3rd had a wide front with a narrow pedestal all incorporated together. I never saw it converted to the narrow configuration but would say the wide axles would have to be removed somehow. By your video I didn't see that as a model option. But it sure did look like a factory front end. Neighbor did put a Char-Lynn power-steering on it. Made it a lot easier to drive. Electric start with petcocks for each cylinder to help starting. I plowed with it pulling 3-14s" in black soil and clay hills. They were pullers.
