Dad had a JD70 Diesel with the narrow front in about 1965. I think it was a 1955 model and had the pony motor. I was about 7 years old and Dad took me to the fields with him a lot. One time Dad let me sit between his legs and drive it on the highway from one entrance for the equipment storage lot to the entrance to the field. It wasn't far. Prolly only about 100 yards. But it sure had this little boy excited. So the 70 has always had a special place in my heart.

A great video. My dad bought a new propane 720 in 1956 that was our big tractor until 1964. We bought the neighbors 70 diesel. I had the front wheel pedistal breakoff and roll under the tractor while pulling an anhyrous applicator. I cut the engine, jerked the rope on the applicator and ran like heck as the cloud of gas folowed me. Today I own a 1955 JD70 parade ready.

I have four John Deere 70 tractors, three diesel and one gas. Big difference in the amount of fuel the gas tractor guzzles in comparison to the diesel as stated.

As a 14 year old kid, I had the owner of driving the first John Deere model R diesel in a district meeting at Wichita, Kansas with my uncle , a dealer from Plainview, Texas Pat Patrick. I just remember setting in the seat, the hood look a mile long to me . I learn to drive a tract on a JD model D and a model A & model G. 5:49

With high speed reverse and second gear opposite each other across the bottom, foot shifting worked nicely. And with an extended clutch handle, throttle and clutch were operable with one large right hand. Slick setup for a young hotshot loader operator.

That’s a good video and I enjoyed watching it. I have a 70 LP they were popular in the South because Butane as we called it was cheap and plentiful. Another plus was that it couldn’t be stolen and used in cars like gasoline. In the MidSouth we referred to a 5gallon can and a syphon hose as a “Moonlight Credit Card “ and stealing gas happened all the time. The 70 was a really good tractor but I’m glad I didn’t have to farm with one now.

The R was discontinued about the time the 70 D came out in 1955. The 80 came out later on in 1955. My 70D was built Dec 30, 1954 and shipped the next day.

I don't remember my 70d having a high range reverse. But the high revers was for the rear mounted cotton pickers that were popular for the model g

I always figured that the 70 used the same trans as the G. With live power added. The John Deere R was the first with live power.

I've operated both. The 4000 was basically a 3020 rear end with a 4020 motor and a few other cosmetic features of the 4020 deleted to make it an economical alternative to the 4020. The 4000 I ran had the rare power shift option. Wish I knew where it is today. Ive only ever seen one other with power shift.
