Excellent review. As an owner of a large cast iron collection I know this is good accurate information. I often find it easier to clean my cast iron than other pots.

Good info. We have a couple each of the pans shown and also a couple 12" pans and the round griddle and long griddle, all Lodge. We love our seasoned cast iron! We also have 25 pieces of enameled cast iron, and each piece of cookware has its use in the kitchen, outside, or using our cast iron wood stoves. Great stuff!

Well done. Love my Cast Iron cookware. Had 12” & 10” Lodge Skillet for about 10 years now. My aluminum none-stick cookware was in need of replacement, but rather invest a few hundred dollars in more of the same which will have to be replaced another 3 to 5 year, I’ve gone all Lodge Cast Iron... 2 Dutch Ovens, 2 - 12” Skillets, 2 - 10” Skillets, 1 8” and 1 - 6” Skillet, and the 10 1/2” Round Griddle for now...

Those pans are really built to last a lifetime or two and I am using a skillet my grandmother used for many decades and my mother used it, and I am now using it. I just purchased two dutch ovens (One for indoor use, and one for outside use) and is waiting for my skillet which I ordered as well.

I treasure the skillet my grandmother used and no telling when she got it. The stove had an area above for food to stay warm and had 4 eyes on it for pots and pans to sit. The oven worked great and baked the food perfectly. The stove had an iron lifter to remove and put back the covers.

Do you remember the season your grandma use to have on her cast pan? Here's how you get it. Don't wash your pan with water. Maybe when you first purchase and start to season, or if you've really burnt the bottom and ruined your season, then ok. Stick it under water. But, for regular day to day maintenance, put all leftover food away, scrape your pan with a metal spoon or spatula until you've gotten most of the bits out of your pan, oil, whatever... Then heat your pan back up. Once heated, the rest of the bits should start coming off easier. Sporadically use your metal spatula (or spoon) to scrub around your pan, and the inside. Then dump a 1/4 cup of salt into your pan. Preferably canning salt but, I have used both table and canning salt. I usually use viva paper towels to take and scrub my pan, with the salt mixture. Get everything with it. Look at your salt like it's your dawn dish soap. Once you've cleared your pan completely, dump all salt out into garbage or sink, (I use sink because I'm afraid I'll melt my garbage bags,) then take a fresh paper towel, and wipe out any remaining salt. There you have it. In no time you will build a stick resistant film on your pan. Whether it's lodge or mainstay, your pan will be beautiful!

I would try to steer clear of using steel wool or anything abrasive in a seasoned pan! It's hard on the seasoning and you will never be able to build up a good even layer of seasoning! Nice lodge pan though, I've had my eye on one of those for awhile.

i have 2 pans my greatgrandmother had. from the 1920's after eating all the teflon off 8 or 10 non stick pans i had enough of that and broke out the old cast... since then ive grown the collection to 10 pieces in all. some are used daily some onlyfor pizza night... i did keep one non-stick pan, i use it as a cover for the cast when i'm trying to melt something, its a perfect fit... and finally found something that doesn't stick to it -- the steam.

Nice review. I am looking to buy some cast iron skillets myself. I thought it's funny that as a Dutchman living in holland, I've never in my life seen a "dutch oven pancake". We actually do not make those at all over here. It kind of looks like a pan version of our apple pie (which is basically a lattice-top apple pie).
@bestkitchenreviews6 жыл бұрын
Hi Boyan, glad you like the review! As far as I know, the pancake is not from Holland. I believe a restaurant in Washington, USA made pancakes similar to the German Pfannkuchen. They probably took "deutsch" and turned it into dutch by mistake!
@BoyanGuitar6 жыл бұрын
bestkitchenreviews Interesting! Sounds very plausible. I was in the US a couple of weeks ago and I visited a bakery called "Henks Dutch Bakery". Not a single Dutch style baked good in that store. Anyway, thanks for the video and good luck in your endeavours!
@bestkitchenreviews6 жыл бұрын
That's too bad about the "Dutch" bakery. My local "German" bakery makes Black Forest Cake which would make any German cry because it's that tasteless! I've resorted to making desserts at home avoiding disappointment. Hopefully, you'll find a "real" Dutch bakery on your next trip 😀 Maybe this one is authentic? www.hollandamericanbakery.com/shop/

Are there any kind of stoves these are not designed for?
@bestkitchenreviews9 жыл бұрын
Randy Marsh Hi Randy, I believe you can use cast iron pots on any cooktop. You do have to be careful on glass cooktops because any unevenness on the pot may scratch the glass surface. Lift and move the pot rather than sliding it to avoid scratches. Here is the recommendation from Lodge: "Lodge products may be used on various heat sources including gas, electric, induction and ceramic/glass top stoves and ovens. Seasoned Cast Iron can also be used on the grill or for camp cooking. Microwaves should not be used" Hope that helps! Please subscribe if you haven't already :-)

I like your video, thanks! Do you think the pan could be used to roast a joint of meat with the lid on?
@nora220005 жыл бұрын
AlabamaTree Yes! Use a trivet or a layer of root vegetables in the bottom of the pan to keep it ofc the bottom after you sear all sides of the meat. Put the lid on and roast it high for an hour for prime rib and low for 8 hours for brisket.
@asadb19906 жыл бұрын
the one misinformation that a lot of videos give is that soap should not be used. but that has been debunked by many. all you have to do is apply soap, wash and then dry right away with paper towel. my pan's seasoning is just fine. dont leave pan in soapy water because that will strip seasoning. i often dont even stove dry my pans and they still dont rust. another thing of note is right after cooking, wipe off remaining oil while pan is still hot otherwise as the pan cools, the oil will become rubbery and sticky.

what type of oil is best to use? mine gets sticky with olive oil.
@bestkitchenreviews10 жыл бұрын
I've used olive oil, vegetable oil, coconut oil...pretty much any oil to cook with. If you mean to coat the pan after drying, use vegetable or canola oil. If it is sticky, then you might be using too much oil. After coating the pan with oil, wipe off all the excess with a towel. Hope that helps. Please subscribe :-)
@twoblink10 жыл бұрын
Your problem is you are using oil. Use FAT. Lard is your friend with this. The flash point is much much higher and your food will feel extra slippery. That said; if you have to use oil instead of lard; avocado oil is my recommendation, as it has a high flashpoint as well. Grapeseed oil is horrible in that it gets gummy. If you are using olive oil; search "fake olive oil" online; there's a 99% chance that you aren't really using olive oil as 99% of all olive oil is fake.

I know it's a bit late, flax oil is the best to use hands down, also if it's sticky your leaving too munch on when seasoning.

I have tried several new recipes, half of the food sticks and an hour to get it clean again is too much for me. I thought maybe I have missed something. Watched many videos, read many articles, I really wanted to this to work. It doesn't. When you can't make a toasted sandwich after weeks of using it, killing yourself to get this clean, oiling it, it's time to move on.
