If existing insulation between joists is 100mm (typically) and the recommended timber is 89mm CLS does this mean you are limited to 189 total for your loft boarded jobs. The recommended depth I read about everywhere is 270mm total. Not sure how you would get to 270 using timber and boards because the timber at 170 mm would be too heavy. Any thoughts? Thankd

Hi there, great tutorial! Looking to give this a go in my Mum's place (1930s bungalow). Since the space will only be used for storage and to prevent too much weight being placed on the old, original joists, would 2x3 timber frame be ok compared to the 2x4? Thanks

Hi, yes the smaller cls would work fine, good luck..

Almost got plastic kit then seen your video! Thank you for saving from the trouble! What timber would you suggest for 400mm insulation (new build)? Do you fix timber to the joists?
@MrBish11

Yes, use 89mm cls and screw into the original joists cross ways at 90 degrees, good luck !

The reason for the plastic legs is to lift the boards above the required depth of insulation (270mm) and also allow for an air gap. I've used the plastic kits in the past and they're absolutely fine.

Thanks for this. Do you extend the joists all the way across the space or just the space that you need?
@MrBish11
@MrBish11 6 ай бұрын
No, just the space that you need, you can always add on at a later date doing it this way

Thanks, great video! Can you use thicker CLS?
@MrBish11

Thanks Rupert, yes, we use up to 89mm cls as any larger the weight would be too much for loft storage.

Nice work, is there a reason the edges of the room don't get boarded in general I mean

Good job. What wood is used for the bracing? Just off cuts of the loft boards? Also with the initial joists you laid can they do the same job if cut shorter in length to fit in car for transporting?

@@MrBish11 Thank you it will be a lot easier after watching you 😊 I was either buying plastic feet or going direct to the original joists and squashing insulation so the additional timber joists are an ideal solution 👌🏻

Any recommendations in terms of size of secondary joists that will go perpendicular to the original ones? I've 100mm of insulation to add to current level and I'm then going to floor it.

What screw do you use for CLS to screw down to old Joists? Do you use same screws for OSB as well?

@MrBish11

Hi, try to use 400mm spacing if possible, around the joints add extra batons or smaller batons to brace.

@@svenwhothehell5980 yes Steve, whatever fits the gap underneath, but be sure to screw in the wedge that you use to the original joist as this stops movement.
