You are blessed beyond imagination. Land with a large spring reservoir? Dear Lord. It's yours to loose if your are careless about it. You should construct a lot of holding ponds, as much as you can construct in a 50 acre land. Wow. I am crying just watching how bountiful your water is.

@Gene Hasenbuhler At some point, most man-made structures will fail and that is why constant rehab is preformed on dams, bridges, roadways and so on... However, the only element I would incorporate is riprap to both sides of the dam since this structure was not of the typical dam design [core width at bottom > top] to help prevent erosion/+stabilization.

Have you thought about diverting the water flowing over the spillway into a small reservoir? You know, a little insurance policy for the dry season.

You all are so going to hate me for this. As a kid always wanted to build a dam. Became a hydrologist, learned there is a lot to building a dam. This is cool, yet scares the heck out of me, but I will not be a bummer. One thing I do want to say is that you are not accounting for the energy of the water after it tops your dam. This energy will erode the creek if not dissipated. Short solution would be to add many small to large rocks in the spillway to add friction, dissipating the energy of the water as it flows down the flume. Do that and you will be happy. otherwise the downstream neighbors will get washed out over time. Sorry. Physics.

The Clean Water Act used to prevent land owners from doing this sort of private and necessary work on you own property. It was recently amended and clarified so that the feds do not harass property owners and farmers as they did in the past decade with this stupid government overreach. Your project is great. That little water wheel will generate far more power than you will use. You might have an engineer give you a bit of assistance (free) in selecting components and efficiently using the power.

Years ago I wanted to drill a well hole out in the sticks in Arizona. The ground temperature at 150 feet is 65 degrees. I intended to insert a sealed copper loop into the hole and run water through it for very inexpensive cooling using a closed water circuit. The well drillers work under county permits. When I met with this permit bureaucrat you would have thought I was building a meth lab out there. He did not or would not understand it and came up with every cockamamie excuse to deny me the permit. That was in 1982. Now anyone proposing this is hailed as a genius and a champion of the environment. Go figure.

He never explains how they went about plugging the 10inch pipe such that it does not leak. I'm part of a group building a dam half this size in Haiti. Our current plan is to divert the creek with sand bags while we pour 1/2 of the dam then reroute the creek over the completed half to pour the second half. Our dam/weir will only be 2' tall at the overflow point and 3.5' at the crest height. Our problem is that the creek has a 30-40x flow factor variation during the year. i.e. it can vary from 1gallon/second in dry season to 40gallons per second on the rainiest of days.

Contrary to most of the dams built for small creeks, streams, the building of Hoover Dam should be a lesson, but many seem to ignore it. By making a concave, there isn't as much pressure put on the integrity of the structure to hold back water, puls digging to hard pan secures the dam for ages.

There's a dam across the Mississippi River at Keokuk, IA. It's over a mile long, straight as an arrow and about 60ft tall. It holds back a huge reseervoir of water for the lock that barges use. I don't think his dam will have an issue.

if you build like this without embankment treatment, surface soil will soon be eroded, after rain the mud will be washed down and accumlate along side the dam cause more leakage underneath the cement. the proper way to build is to lay down pebble in the whole reservoir area and add reinforcement like log beneath flood line. use the trees u fall to make some mulch and put em around the trees root near the pond.

Make sure that the wheel is powered from a flume at the top rather than the bottom. An underflow wheel will loose power due to cavation bubbles behind the wheel on the bottom where as a top pour does not have that. Also the height ands the gravity factory so more power is produced...Also you should not have built a straight line wall. A concave wall would allow for greater strength as the dam is pushed tighter into the sides of the walls from water weight....

I hate to tell you this there are not steel in the concrete. The water will push it over. You should have and almost solid steel frame work inside the concrete wall. The concrete by itself will not be strong enough to hold that much water. It will all be gone in less than 5 years. The concrete company should have told you.that you need steel reinforcements in that wall.

One other video I watched you were struggling to make power with your water wheel. As st is so long ago I guess you resolved it but you need to build an axil flux generator.

The best hydroelectric is the Abad turbine, no need for a dam, no need for a head. Just a flow of water, the new invention small amount of water can generate electricity to megawatts..

It's actually called a wheelbarrow, not wheelbarrel. I would have made the same mistake had I not used the term for some time, or had its proper enunciation not validated by others.

Awesome, I am trying to repair a pond dam with a concrete wall. How thick is the wall and how deep is the wall below the ground?
