Franz Liszt - Mephisto-Walzer No 1: Der Tanz in der Dorfschenke
Nicolas Economou - piano
2:05 Franz Liszt - Mephisto-Walzer No. 1
After a short interview, the great pianist Nicolas Economou gives a thrilling performance of Liszt's Mephisto-Walzer No. 1 (Der Tanz in der Dorfschenke / The Dance in the Village Inn) by Franz Liszt. Franz Liszt's composition has been inspired by an episode from Nikolaus Lenau's Faust.
Nicolas Economou, Νικόλας Οικονόμου, born in Cyprus in 1953, was a brilliant pianist who was internationally known for the classical music competition Tchaikovsky Competition. As pianist, Economou played in Europe, Russia, Canada, Japan and USA mainly. He performed solo and with orchestras and others performers and composers like Martha Argerich, Rodion Shchedrin, Michel Beroff, and others. The virtuoso Nicolas Economou died in a car crash in 1993, at the age of forty.
The Mephisto Waltzes are four waltzes composed by Franz Liszt in 1859-62, 1880-81, 1883 and 1885. Nos. 1 and 2 were composed for orchestra, and later arranged for piano, piano duet and two pianos, whereas 3 and 4 were written for piano only. Of the four, the first is the most popular and has been frequently performed in concert and recorded.

He had a genius feel for Liszt. Very dynamic technique which allows for tremendous expression of the composer's intentions. What a loss that he died so young.

This is my favorite version. I think he really plays out the demonic feeling of this marvelous piece. I feel I can see the naughty Mephisto flying around, looking for chances to make some tricks, etc. Only Economou helps me find Mephisto. Thank you so much, and may you rest in peace.

That's why Martha Argerich loved Economou so much. She liked the game: "let's break that Steinway". Or maybe Argerich saw in Economou her equal.
