Brilliant solution for settling for the frame - the lag bolts and grooved timber and then the screwed upper frame was so impressive. It's coming along beautifully and Cinda's caulking efforts to finish the joints and gaps is going to make this one super-quality home. Loved the episode as usual with your quiet bater and teasing. Much appreciated.

Thanks Jim! We didn’t invent the method, just adapted it from several different ways you can allow for settling. It was a job though😁

Hi Cinda and Lance, I'm watching a few cabin builders on KZbin, and so far I can say, nobody is perfect. You guys doing great and your cabin looking great too can't wait to see how it looks finished. The cold weather is bad for my Arthritis I hope you guys have not the same problem.

Great progress as usual. I used the same method for my stud walls but used a single 2x4 and a skill saw. But looks like your doing fine. I remember the uneasy feeling i had sawing into my logs! Mistakes arn't easily hidden when using a chain saw. Take it slow and easy!!! Another great video!
@natureartgirl2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the double 2x4 was only temporary to get the chainsaw depth. It held the bracket so he couldn’t cut too deep😬 the skill saw would have made a much nicer cut, but on our logs the saw we have wouldn’t go deep enough. Needed a bigger blade😁It was definitely not fun😂
@TheBeardedCarpenter2 жыл бұрын
Howdy y’all- mighty fine job on the wall framing. I do the same thing with the slots and even have the same saw. Keeping up with the settling is vital when building with logs. On the southern yellow pine I allow 1/2” per foot with the style of building I do. It’s amazing how much more settling takes place after the weight of the roof is on. Can’t wait to see your cabin in person. Take care and God’s blessings to y’all

Thank you Paul! As you probably noticed, we made a couple of mistakes on the wall😂had to reroute the wiring so it wouldn’t get crushed. Live and learn, but I think we got it figured out. Come see us when you get a chance! Take care!!😊💕

It is beautiful watching you and your wife’s fine work. If I can throw a thought your way: The angled top 2x4 plate can actually be extended and notched together to cross your upper studs and it should completely stabilize and brace the wall without need for lags, in case you find the lags aren’t quite as stabile as you would like. I so don’t wish to be an armchair carpenter; you two are such a delight to watch and wonderful builders. All the very best and thank you for the wonderful content. 😊👏

great work, congrats ! nice video editing too..is the settling mandatory because the wood isn't dry yet ? I have the same project here in France..thanks
@natureartgirl2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! From what we have read, even dry logs settle from compression of all the weight put on them. It can vary a lot. I think they even leave a settling space on kiln dried logs, just not as much. This is our first log cabin, so we are just going by what we have learned from others. But we know for sure that ours has settled well over an inch in just the time it took to finish it. Hope your project goes well!!😊👍

What’s the name of device to run chainsaw down 2x4? Got any advice for covering round log wall with drywall?
@natureartgirl Жыл бұрын
It is a vertical chainsaw mill/guide. We got it on Amazon for about $30. I’m not sure about the drywall question. We have never tried that because we just like the natural log look as much as possible. Have fun with your project!😊👍
@markdudar66322 жыл бұрын
I think I would’ve described the drywall on both sides 2 foot wide 8 foot tall inscribe each log on the drywall
@natureartgirl2 жыл бұрын
Well that really won’t work. The logs will settle about 5 or 6 inches for this height of wall. So then your scribe will no longer fit. It will crush the bottom of each curve and have a gap at the top. Log cabin building is weird😂😂you can make a wider groove in the logs and slide the sheet rock into it so the logs can still slide down. But we are going to texture the sheet rock, so we decided to put a piece of trim into the slot.
@Dutch7792 жыл бұрын
So the moral of the log cabin is to stack your logs away for 400 years, crisp and dry, no shrinkage and no slots needed. 😊
@natureartgirl2 жыл бұрын
🤣🤣🤣yeah and strangely enough they still would settle some due to compression from the weight of the logs and roof. They still use this method on kiln dried log homes, just not as much settling. It’s weird😂😂
@idahobob1802 жыл бұрын
I don't get all the shrinking, my log house is built out of lodge pole pine windows doors stud walls were made to fit been that way for 15 years everything works fine
@natureartgirl2 жыл бұрын
Don’t know Bob. This is our first cabin. Our logs were cut this year and walls have already shrunk over 1 1/2”. I’m sure it makes a difference how dry your logs are and what style of construction…chinked or scribed. We are just following standard allowance to be sure. Glad yours worked out ok!!!😊👍👍
