I have never been able to sew a nice, flat, even edged block...ever!! Until today, watching your tutorial. I do all the measuring, the 1/4 " seam, ironing, etc, it still is uneven and awful to the point I won't even consider doing this type of block. Then you say to cut the strips 1/2 " longer and trim each piece...well, dang, there is the magic!!! I am so pleased, I finally made a block I can keep!!!! Thank you so much!!!❤️😎

This block I’ve always liked, especially the traditional with a red center that represents the hearth or fireplace in the middle! You can also google different cabin block layouts and see different secondary design possibilities- so many options! Is there a specific rule as to which direction you should press the seams to? Nice tutorial.

Hi I love the way you explain the block,but how much fabric do you need for a big quilt?
@TheSewingRoomChannel3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy. If you want to make a large quilt, you can buy log cabin quilt patterns. They will usually list the amount of fabric for twin, full, queen/king. You can purchase one from a quilt shop, Joann Fabrics and Crafts, and internet websites - Missouri Start Quilt Company. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍

Hi Sherrill! Great instructional video! My question is about measurements: your block is 11"x11" and you start in the center with 1 2"x2" square. Then the next is 2"x4"; the 3rd is 2"x5 1/2", then 2"x7", etc til you get to 2"x10". Is there a formula for the sizes & lengths for each strip? In other words, if the center is a different dimension (not 2"x2", maybe 1"x1" for example), how would one determine what the subsequent "logs" length would be?
@TheSewingRoomChannel3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joan. I have no specific formula. If you want your finished block to be a specific size, there are many log cabin quilt patterns that you can buy. You can purchase patterns from quilter fabric websites - equilter.com, fatquartershop.com, fabric. com, - and many others. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍

Hi, I am very curious ... why do you press the seams to one side, rather than opening them up? Is it just because it's easier? Or does it look better when it's finished? Or ... ?
@TheSewingRoomChannel6 жыл бұрын
Hi Monelle. Excellent question. Yes, it is easier to press to one side rather than pressing the seams open. But, it is easier to match the seams in a row to another row when they are pressed in opposite directions from each other. I hope I answered your question. Thanks for watching. Happy sewing.

What size you cut your Sashing strips at for something like that
@TheSewingRoomChannel5 жыл бұрын
Hi Dianne. Most sashing strips are about 2 1/2" wide. Cut a few strips and lay it in between the blocks and see if you like it. There are no rules in quilting -- just suggestions. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing.

How much material do i need for a queen size quilt
@TheSewingRoomChannel2 жыл бұрын

Cheryl, how can I use this pattern on a table runner? Thank you.
@TheSewingRoomChannel5 жыл бұрын
Hi Washiela. Yes you can use it in a table runner. Decide how long you want the runner. Chain them together using a 1/4" seam. You will find it makes an interesting pattern. You can also add a small border around the edges. Hope this helps. By the way, my grandfather was born in Liverpool. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing.

How much of each of the fabric do i need
@TheSewingRoomChannel4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dagi. The amount of fabric you will need depends on the number of blocks you plan on making. You can probably make 2 blocks out of 1/8 yard of each. Stay safe, and happy sewing.
