I just watched another well known quilter use an expensive ruler to square up the blocks, and each block was made of pieces cut exactly to size. How refreshing to see Jenny’s freestyle method which still achieves fantastic results! Jenny, you’re an inspiration. You make me feel I can have a go and it won’t matter if the result isn’t perfect. I’m off to source a jelly roll right now 😊

I was told when I first started quilting that you did NOT just sew on a piece for a log cabin and trim it!! As I was doing. So glad to see an Expert so it that way!!!! Thank you!

There is a quilt pattern, Lovers Knot which is a variant of log cabin. It was the first pattern I ever did, and the book said to use the add and trim method. As long as your seams are consistent your blocks should all come out the same size. Not necessarily an exact 10 inch, but the same. Also, finished is better than perfect. If you like it - that’s good enough.

Hello from California, USA! Isn't Jenny just wonderful? It's just great how our love of quilting is shared by people from all over the world. This block pattern is one of the oldest in existence. This design was found carved into jars that were inside the pyramids of ancient Egypt there in your part of the world! It's just amazing to me that this pattern has been around so long. And here we are still loving it!

Lordy Honey. .I've ordered the Bias Binding for my last 3 quilts. ..I'm so spoiled. With pre-wound Bobbins and pre- made binding. .I'm in Love!!! 10 yards seams to cover any size Quilt. So I order it along with Fabric. .then when quilt tops done . .no worries. So exciting!

Soemtimes the back side of the fabric is just the right shade you need. I have done this for years. The right side of the fabric may be too bright etc. Audition the back side. I always thought this was a very cool idea to use. Love Log Cabin. Thank you.

Hi Jenny, just to say i big thank you, I am in the UK and i have been watching your videos and cant help but be inspired to make quilts. I started sewing and famously said “patchwork isn’t my thing.” How wrong can you be, I’ve practised and made 2 cat quilts and now just finished a lap quilt. Gosh, not only do I love Missouri Star Quilts but also the log cabin! I’ve been quilting probably longer than Jenny and I’m always greatly thankful when I’m brought back to the ‘simple’ quilts of my Grandma Knowles. Yes, I’ve made my share of complicated and ‘awe provoking’ quilts, but honestly, this is where my heart is. Jenny this video is very timely for me right now as it’s the perfect choice to make for a longtime family friend who is ill. I just learned about Eric yesterday from his daughter who is my hairdresser. He is 85 and Heidi was saying that he has very few people stop by and his wife has already passed. Hubby and I have decided to visit but taking a quilt along would be so much nicer! And I would be able to make this one fairly quickly for him. Not only that, but I literally just finished watching an old video of yours, disappearing nine patch.....as I knew it had a scalloped border. That is the border that I’m planning to put on the baby quilt I’m starting today for a granddaughter who is expecting her first child next month. Most people don't know this, but the log cabin block design has been found as decorations on the jars they put Egyptian mummies intrals in. So the pattern is over 4,000 years old! Anyway I found that out about 10 years ago as I was finding information to share about the block to tell my beginning quilting class. I just love kool quilting trivia. Somewhere in the mid 90's I did my first log cabin quilt. There was a way to flip the blocks and color placement to make a heart. I gave it to my then boyfriend and man I wish I had it back!

The log cabin was my first quilt. I didn’t know how to sew didn’t know anything about a 1/4 inch seam or squaring up the block. So you can imagine the quilt and I was making it for my queen size bed. Took me 15 years to finish hand quilting it. By that time I had a king size bed so it on our bed in our camper.

I love the log cabin quilt but Jenny the first time I tried making one I never realized they were not totally square. Following a pattern I saw in a magazine I tried to duplicate theirs. You should have seen the mess it ended up becoming !! I trimmed and trimmed and turned things around and when I laid it out it was in the shape of a Dresden plate tool !! I was so embarrassed and then it hit me what I did wrong !! Boy did I feel like the dumbest thing this side of Mars !! Well since that day I've turned out many a lot cabin quilt and I've never made that mistake again . Thank goodness !! Have a blessed day !

I have always wanted to make a log cabin quilt so, here I go, after watching Jenny's instructions. "Holly Taylor invites you to Winter Manor" by Moda I wanted to make a bit larger quilt so I have used some cream and green fabric and some others that have leaves and berries. I am just on the last strip and the reds have stretched out a lot, also using up the other fabulous designs in the Jelly Roll This is an amazing jelly roll and if you enjoy nature this is a very good designer. I even have a few of Holly's fabric from another project that I have incorporated into the quilt. This has been such an encouraging project as due to lock-down I am sheltered and at HOME Thank you so much Jenny

I love your advice for making the log cabin quilt block, THE PIECE I FINISH IS THE PIECE I SEW TOO AND THE PIECE YOU SEWED LAST GOES TO THE TOP. I made my first log cabin quilt block and ran out of a few fabric pieces and replaced with the closest like fabric. I’m not to tech savvy but will have one of my children show me how to send you a picture. I am very pleased how it came out and I think you will like it too.

You always provide us with some wonderful tips and techniques. For some reason, I always have problems piecing the log cabin pieces. But, this method is most helpful. Many thanks. The idea of using the wrong side of your fabric is unique, at least for me. Another great tutorial!!

I made a log cabin and really liked it. There are so many layout possibilities! Next time I think I would prefer to cut all the pieces at once though. I found the trimming to be a little bit tedious and broke my sewing rhythm. Hope to see this one in Block magazine and including the sizes of the block strips. It will definitely be on my list!

Terrific to see this latest tutorial (must admit in trawling through all those pre-packed fabrics without enough light colours in them for what I needed, I never thought of using the 'flip-side'... Thanks Jenny as always for your tutorials and enthusiasm, even in these difficult times... Also so glad you recognise that sometimes bias binding is better than the straight version - I think it's less bulky, and - as one of my quilt-enthusiastic friends (not the most modest!) pointed out that bias binding not wearing out individual fibres would last the centuries better! :-)

I have my own mantras I've developed in the short time I've been quilting, and it's great to know you as a seasoned quilter do this as well! Another awesome tutorial. Jenny, your weekly tutorial "ALMOST" makes it worth staying at home during this Pandemic!!! I have to say that since the order to stay at home has been placed, I honestly haven't been too upset about it. I have been a little OTT when going out....I take wet wipes and when placing anything in the shopping cart, I wipe it down with a wet wipe and wipe the product AGAIN when I use the SELF-CHECKING /U-Scan check-outs. The last thing I want to do is to get COVID-19 OR give it to someone!! (BTW...I'm shocked at the number of kids that parents seem to think it's okay for their children to go into stores without a mask....To me, that's dangerous, but then if people chose to do that, so be it, I guess!)
