I have a question regarding the size of this cabin. Wasn’t Dick Proenneke’s cabin short? If I remember right he could use a step ladder to reach above the roof. I was thinking that a sauna bath house would be the perfect type of low roof cabin for several reasons. You wouldn’t have to heat as large a space.(height wise), in most saunas, you sit on a bench so the ceiling wouldn’t need to be more than 6ft or less? ,the entry could be an overhang porch with the the wood storage right there and you would undress in the cabin itself. If you needed a taller area to stand under a shower head, you could make a flat roof/one way slant roof addition on the back of the cabin, similar to the outhouse style that would be joined by a door to the sauna . It would also be a safety feature to have a second exit on the opposite side of the bldg. In your main cabin you have windows to escape from during a fire. You would need a second escape from this bldg. also. Most importantly I would think is would be easier to build by yourself, wouldn’t it? The enclosed sauna would be small with a porch on the back and front and the overall height of the bldg. would be shorter. This is just an idea I thought of as I listened to you speak of the size of logs you would need for this bathhouse. It certainly should be a less involved job than the full cabin with a loft. Am I thinking wrong on this? As usual I enjoy watching all of your programs, looking forward to the bathhouse build.

Working smart video. Do you think your viewers would be interested in a video about simple tips for working smart and efficiently? When I started refurbishing my place I wasted so much time not adequately planning a certain project each day, changing my plans, chasing tools around the cabin, etc.

Hey brother! Thanks again for keeping us entertained by your videos. Love what you're doing on the property. I wanted to share a word of encouragement for you. I teach Outdoor Education at my high school, and have been sharing ways to get into the backcountry, and have shared your story with all my classes. What you share on a weekly basis directly or indirectly relates to all that we want to teach our kids, and I've loved using you as a resource for kids to go further with what interests them. Again, I just wanted to give you a word of encouragement to keep doing what you're doing! See you at the cabin next time!

Shawn, thank you for these videos. Your style is unique in the KZbin world. I love learning, and I get to learn something every time I watch. I also just watch for pure relaxation. At our homestead here in the high Nevada desert, we don’t have access to good timber and logs. But, we can get them hauled in! I am hoping to build a bath house next year... I am looking forward to watch your videos and learn. Thanks again and God bless you and your family!

You also might want to consider where & how you'll do laundry. There are some really cool foot-treadle off-grid washing machine things. They don't have a lot of room per load, but they're useful. The alternative is a sink with a sloped side that has ridges forming a set of nested downward pointing chevrons, V shapes (only more shallow) for scrubbing, but that can be a bit exhausting physically, compared to just wiggling your foot on a pedal.

Hi Shawn, my name is Jay and I live in Peterborough Ontario. I’m very new to your journey and I must say that as an outdoorsman myself, I am really interested in your philosophy. I myself am of Algonquin blood and what I know is that the connection to the earth is key for all humanity to survive. I am a tradesman and specialize in heritage buildings so I understand the build in aspects of your program. I lived in Halliburton for six years so I know the territory and elements very well. I snowshoe and fish but am not an avid hunter at all. I recently have been salvaging coyotes from local farmers, the coyotes get into the livestock and are shot. I take them and create beautiful pelts as so the beauty of the animal is preserved and not left to rot in a field somewhere. I believe in truth, dignity, accountability, honour, and hard work. I am 48 years old and sending two girls off to University, so hard work is a big part of mine and my wife Lisa’s journey too. I would love to one day come and spend a day with you and see your amazing creation first hand. Until we meet in person I just wanted to consider you brother and also say “ Meegwetch” or Thank you in the Algonquin dialect. And also a very important message to you in the Sioux language “ Mitakuye Oyasin” a simple Lakota prayer meaning “We are all related ...human, animal, plant etc.” Stay warm brother Shawn! Kind regards, Jay

Shawn...you build "anything" and we will (the viewers) very much enjoy watching it. It's cool seeing the progress you make, as well as, you're using hand tools. And many of us are learning through you. I recently built (by hand) a two room dog house. Even though the dog is inside at night time. Nevertheless, my Abby loves her new house. Your channel motivated me to try this. Now I want to build an attachment to the backyard deck.

I have a question for you I noticed that you have a lot of your hand tools hanging up on the outside of your cabin how do you keep them from rusting
@T1mbrW0lf
@T1mbrW0lf 5 жыл бұрын
For some heavy tools in semi-frequent use (like pulley blocks), a "patina" of rust on the frame won't really cause any problems. Other tools (axe heads, saw blades, augers, pulley sheaves) can be oiled or waxed to protect them from corrosion. Neglect affects tool condition far worse than rust . . .

Hey, Shawn, have you thought about laying the moss or plant matter in between the logs as you build? Then you can use that great knife to trim off the excess inside and out. I've seen this done in other log building videos. It seems like a good way to make sure the moss goes all the way through. Just a thought.

Hey Man ,,, the blue adz is used to do a lateral grove in a shrink fit cabin.. the one you have needs a bevel on the bottom side of the blade so it won't stick in,, yours will just stick in the wood,, .. I've warn out a couple of them.. So grind from the point,, on the bottom back about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch to give the adz a place so it will cut out wood & not just stick in.. same as the boat builders adz,, The bevel lets the wood to chip out.. Thanks for not cooking,,, your making me fat... lol..Love your way of life,, & your outlook!!!! lived off grid for years & years. moved logs with a draft horse!!!. Gin pole ,,come-a-long,, block & tackle will lift anything.. I put up one log on a cabin 53 foot long alone.. made walls outta 20 inch butts with 14 inch tops.. Aloha my friend!! be safe..

Hello, Shawn and thanks for sharing your journey. To the practiced eye, it is obvious you are either a journeyman or you have done a lot of studying and practicing. You are doing it right and well-done, sir. You have an experienced approach and you use your head. You have my admiration. If you asked "Is there anything else I should include to help others build their tool kit?" I would say that marking devices are a must and are often forgotten. And in the bush, you can't just pop down to the store. Leads for the scribes, construction pencils, perhaps a Sharpie-like marker. And chalk line powder. You know the list. Thanks again...and I am a subscriber and I give a Like to each videos. Keep living the dream and enjoy your winter.

Over the last few years, I've found that a lot of the antique/vintage tools are better than the new ones. With patience, selective shopping, leads to them often being more economical, too. While there are good exceptions, much of what's available today have poorer quality metals, embedded plastic components and sloppy craftsmanship. There's a place for inexpensive tools and even disposable tools. IMO, working logs, by hand, isn't the place for most of them.

Cutting a life out of the Bush, building a life with their bare hands and basic tools. I'll be following you each and every week. Thanks for sharing this with us Shawn. Have a great week. 😊👍

I know you're into the whole "hand tools/old ways" thing, and I get that - but since you also have things like an electric Fridge and a chainsaw why not then a 4-wheel drive small Side-by-side or woodsman type 4-wheeler like a hunter would use? you could drag much bigger logs with one, pull out rocks, tow a small sled or trailer for gathering materials, arrange 3 logs into a tri-pod /teepee looking thing and with rope and pulley or cables, pull and raise much bigger timbers to help build heavy stuff???? I mean, since you mentioned so many times in this video how you can only work with smaller wood, why not? Also, unless I've missed it, you never show how far it is, to where you park your truck, or how far off the paved road your cabin and property are?? I'd be interested in seeing that - I heard in the last video or one before it a lot of road noise or engine noise of some sort and wondered if someone was blasting around in a Jeep or 4-wheeler right near your cabin????? Thanks Sir-

A bit of feedback speaking from experience - and maybe you’ve planned some of this already. I grew up with a sauna at our home on a lake. We used it year round. A few years back I built one on my lake front property. Elevate building so you have some airspace under it. Air movement better with bath water draining to ground underneath. Thru the wall wood stove feed is great but if you just feed the stove from inside sauna you’ll save a bunch of headaches. If you bathe in Finnish sauna often no shower heads or plumbing- just buckets where you mix your hot and cold water with a dipper. If you want to sauna in the winter your pipes will freeze. Keep a low ceiling. Make sure to have a gap under the door for fresh air and a vent high up on wall. You want sauna to dry out when done. Wood frame window in sauna room for natural light and a nice view. Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps. Not sure why anyone dislikes this episode. Thumbs up for me.

It is so interesting to hear you talk about all your tools and to see them up close. Your enthusiasm for the project is contagious and now I'm geared up to watch each episode with anticipation! Copper sink and Spanish showerhead sound beautiful. Can't wait!

As usual, Shawn, the highest quality of video. I will never build my own cabin, but your calmness and obvious enjoyment of the environment warms the heart. As does Cali. Please, my friend, just keep on being yourself! Susie Coreno (below) used the term 'impeccable work ethic'. She hit the nail on the head!

Very good 👍 I know it's pricey, but the Veritas log scribe is a must for sure. I really could have used that slick a few years ago Great video 🎯

I noticed you said the logs were "six inch diameter." Did you mean radius? Six inch diameter is like a thick branch, those logs look way bigger than six inch diameter.
