Hahaha, no repositioning for me. Once I'm down, that's all I get, because repositioning HURTS too much, even with these satin sheets and silky pj's I got especially so I could move in the bed. I can pull my hips over a little by grabbing the fabric of my gown and pulling to drag the hips. But it will get better. It was an L3-4-5 laminectomy and fusion with TLIF. Means they cut off the pointy bones, used a set of rods to hold L3 and 4 together on both sides and another set of rods to hold L4 and 5 together on both sides. Three sets of screws on each sidr hold the rods in place. From the side of the spine, they removed the two discs, placed a gizmo filled with bone in the disc space, and packed it with more bone so the three vertebrae can fuse. Bone is packed over the rods and screws, too. You may not start PT for three months, because all that work has to set up - the bone has to harden. It's rough, but glad I got it. Get the best surgeon you can find!

My bed is very tall and I'm short. Its somewhat difficult to climb up and in even now (before surgery.) It requires pushing myself up backward with arms and then scooting sideways to appropriate sleeping position...NOT workable. We have an air bed down a spiral staircase. Do you have any ideas?

Nice job going through the mechanicals. I don’t know what I might be getting for possible surgery, so this demo helps me understand what to do . Thank you

Good instructional. Would you recommend engaging your abdominals thru this motion for added support, or would that put more strain on the back?

That's usually not necessary although if you feel like it helps then you can. Usually the person is already very tense due to pain and the body's nervous system protecting itself

My husband is two days post op microdiscectomy and is barely able to walk let alone out pressure on his arm to help himself up from log roll position. I have to assist him with all of it. Is this normal?
@fuelhealthwellness

That can be normal yes especially if he's only 2 days post surgery

Is sleeping on a recliner the first month ok? I’m having two surgeries on my L5-S1 area. The first one will be from the front and the second one from the back and it’s about 4 days later. I’m scared to sleep on my bed as it’s very soft and I tend to sink into it.

You will want to discuss sleeping in a recliner during the first month with your surgeon. It depends on their recommendations. That should be fine as most protocols allow for the reclined position but they limit sitting to just 30 minutes, 3x per day along with no bending, lifting or twisting

Thank you so much for this. I’ll be having a microdiscectomy on my L5 S1 on December 15 and have been trying to get into the habit of doing this. Looks like I’m doing it correctly! I’m a little worried about getting into and out of the car post surgery as I’m only 5’3 and will be getting into a mid size SUV Ford Escape. Because of my shorter leg length, it will be difficult to sit directly onto the seat with my feet on the ground. Any suggestions for this? I’m so worried about reherniating. Thanks in advance and I hope you have recovered well!

@@connor2701 not too bad! It’s kind of a mental marathon for the first 10 weeks, but after that, I felt like I really turned a corner. Still have some mild sciatica, but it comes and goes and I’m able to do normal life again for the most part. I’ve been told it can take up to a year or more for the nerve to fully heal. Best wishes for a successful surgery and full recovery with no issues!

I still do this sometimes even after 15 years post op. I have a question, I am fused T2 to L4 and now have recently started experiencing lumbar radiculopathy most likely due to disc degeneration of the segments below the fusion my pain is where the L5 L4 nerve supply innervates I am so worried about having to extend my fusion and have discs replaced but more so fusing the L5 to sacrum any advice I am 32 will be 33 ending of the year .

You said you were going to do sleeping positions in another video, am I missing it or is it not there? I would super appreciate it, I’m about to have a.bilateral hemilaminectomy this month and could use some tips/reassurance. Also is squatting possible and can use that to pick things up? I’m kinda weird I squat more then I sit and I squat with my feet fully touching the ground, been sitting like that for decades. Scared to have this surgery in my 40’s

I’m also having a hemi laminectomy very soon. But I am 70 years old. Is there anything I need to do that would be of benefit to me? I’m doing core strengthening PT right now. Any other advice would be great!
