The first example, 5db boost was too much, it's overloading the output. That was a DBX emulation which is an RMS type detector and doesn't grab the transients enough to be able to turn it up much. It's more for putting smack in to the transient than reducing them.

Why would you opt for compressors over adaptive limiters? Or rather compression first in the mix followed by adaptive limiter in the mastering? Thank you!
