I think that what he means by '1,2,3' is the passé composé - which always comprises three words (eg. Je suis allé/e, or j'ai pris). Happy to be corrected.

The only time I get tripped up is when you did something for a small period of time like 1 week. Does that still count as continuous, like if someone asked if I read over the break would I say “oui, J’ai lis.” Or would I say, “Oui, Je lisais.” Since the holiday was 1 week is that continuous or did I just read? Or like if someone asks if he had a book would I say. Oui, Il avait un livre” or Il a eu un livre”. Because is that a description?
