I had an issue with no sound coming from the bass but all the other speakers worked. I knew the bass was working because when I wiggled the knob it would make sounds for a few seconds, thus meaning it was a physical connection issue. I took it apart like in the video, got some "crc electronic cleaner" from advanced auto, sprayed it in the bass knob and wiggled it back and forth, then put it back together, worked perfectly!

Sorry for a late reply. Sounds like a bad connection or a "dirty" volume potentiometer. 1. Try wiggling both audio input and speaker output connectors and see if you hear any change. If so, it may have to be re-soldered. Try a different audio input cable/source as well. 2. Try moving the volume knob slowly, wiggling it. 3. If none of these produce any change, there may be a failure of the mainboard.

I have the exact same speakers that you do. My problem is in the right front input that goes into the subwoofer. I doubt if I can repair it after watching your video. But you did a great job. The reason I looked you up is because I didn't want to break the panel trying to take it off because I knew it was not coming off easily after removing the screws. Keep up the good work my friend. Oh, great, I was hoping I wouldn't have to get this deep into this unit, but here we are - my sub isn't working, soooo, I'll have to get in there and try this out. Need to find my multimeter and see for sure if it is open. I'd imagine that's the problem though - what else would it be where the sub rarely, if ever, actually works?

does this set simulate "fake" surround sound in a 2 channle sound card like in the cheap dell PC's. I know Creative Labs has one that does fake the channels to speakers 3 and 4 if you don't have a 4.1 or 5.1 sound card.

Excellent and informative video. Unfortunately, my problem appears to be a bad input jack on the bass/center channel speaker (great dane dog kept leaning on subwoofer under desk). While disassembling and testing my Z506, I found the bass potentiometer only ranges from 0 - 31 kOhm rather than 0 - 50, even though it is an original B50K. Just strange.

WOW Really Great Video!!! I disconnected my sub speaker from this thing and attached it to my other stereo and it works nice albeit not very bassy somehow. The voltage out of the supply looked good at 16v. The pot. R was good too and did change accordingly. Caps dont looked bloated but you never know with them. I get no sound! How to diagnose further?

It would be very easy. Just remove the wires from the old sub and solder to the new one. However, firstly, you'd have to think of a way to mount the 12" sub. Secondly, It will probably work for a while but there is a risk of damaging the amplifier of z506 if you push it too hard. The original sub is rated for 27W only, so if you want a long term solution, I'd recommend to look for a sub that has a similar power rating.

Oh man, I wasn't too sure if I'd get a reply, so thank you for this! Mounting the sub: So the car sub is already in a box. I was thinking of cutting through one side of the sub box and attaching the Logitech board in it. May even use the old sub's "feet" on the new one. Power rating: oh I see, didn't think of that (unfamiliar with electrical). Are there any replacements you could suggest?

I have the same model speaker. For me, the bass works but only the center speaker has a sound output. When I plug in any of the other speakers to the connection of the center speaker, they work meaning the speakers themselves are not the problem. I suspect the connections on the back of the sub to be faulty. Do you have any idea how I could fix this?

If the center speaker and subwoofer work fine but all the satellites don't, I'd suspect it's one of the amplifier ICs. There are two amplifier ICs - one for subwoofer and center spekers, another one for all four (FR, FL, RR, RL) satellite speakers.

Hector Reyes Yes, I think it is possible. First of all, the main board should be visually inspected for any burned components. Then I'd check the amplifier IC with a multimeter for shorts. If there are no shorts, I'd try to swap the amplifier ICs. If then you can hear satellites but not subwoofer or center - you can be sure it's the amplifier ICs. I don't remember which IC it is and how available they are. If you are going to repair it and need any help testing components, let me know. I can disassemble my working subwoofer again and we can compare any values.

I was planning to use it as an external powered sub. Thus I had no use for the headphone jack and as you showed, the volume is already on the sub itself. Hey I'm late 1 year, but anyway: The power supply is inside the subwoofer. If you don't have the right speaker (with volume control), you are complicated. If you have the right speaker but it gets no power, then the power supply inside the subwoofer is dead. It is typical with this model (happened to me as well). You can replace that power supply (make sure to match voltage, current type, etc). The volume of the right speaker is the main general volume of the full system. The potentiometer shown in this video controls only the volume of the bass. This sound system delivers and usually lasts. Sound is fine, speakers are sturdy, all in all is ok. But the truth is that inside it's a disaster. My main board is all corroded, rust ate all the screws, the traces are horrible, the design of the board is horrible, as you can see in this video they covered all the components with this black horrid substance, capacitors are scattered all around, components soldered together, it looks like a board from 1980 made for a school project. So all is hanging by a thread. It's a love & hate thing I have with it.

Martin Kull It could be a bad connection somewhere. Check all of the external and internal wiring. Disconnect and re-connect all of the cables, check if there's power coming to the device.

Thanks for the video. i also bought this model Z506 and just use it for few months and l did not use it anymore.After about 3yrs i decided to use this again but there was crackling/Rattlng noise coming out from the woofer and when the two rear speakers were connected it will also make the same crackling noise.The Bass when put on high works fine but there is always this crackling/rattling noise.Any advise there bro.

Sounds like the volume pot may need cleaning. It probably oxidized from long storage and no use. I'd suggest doing what I described in the video and see if it helps. If you can get to the main volume pot on the speaker, do it there as well. Spray some contact cleaner into aux and other jacks while you are at it. I hope it helps.

+hoernchenmeister7 Hi. I don't really know much about this speaker set. I just happen to be interested in electronics repair. I haven't seen an issue like yours before, so everything I suggest will be only my guess. It could be a temperature related problem. You can try to disassemble the woofer and spray various components with a freezing spray while playing something. If your speakers suddenly start working, you will know which component may be defective. It could be a bad electrolytic capacitor, which could also show signs of bloating or leaking. Be sure to check solder joints for any cracks due to physical and/or thermal stress.

Rick Chen I'd look for parts on eBay. Look for a partnumber on the motherboard and search for it on eBay. If nothing comes up, maybe you can try to replace the port itself.

Hey really good video i didnt had this issue but maybe sometime ^^ I have a question..i got the same speakers 2-3years ago, everything worked fine until a week ago.. My Front Left Speaker (where u can put power on/off and change Volume) plays no sound or sometimes pretty quiet with scratching noises and pretty often its making noises like sizzling and such stuff even if i dont do anything just looking to my computer. Right now i turned the Volume of my Front Left Speaker down but it doesnt change anything still hearing these noises. All other Speakers and my Subwoofer wroking fine without any issues. +Sivertop I feel it's not a great video, because I didn't have a tripod and I can't really edit well yet. I just thought I would do the best I can with the means and skills I have. I also wanted to challenge one of my fears by making this video. I just hope it helps someone as well. Talking about your problem, it sounds like a dirty control or loose wiring somewhere. You can try flexing the cable between the speaker and subwoofer at all places. Especially near the speaker and near the connector. These are the places where bad contacts are most common. If the sound changes in any way - crackles, starts to play well - then you know where the loose connection is and you can proceed to fixing it. If you find the problem to be something else, let me know!

oh quite some time ago i forgot to say if it worked, well it turned out to be the issue with the cable as the Channel-Owner said,.my cable was broken near the front left speaker i just had to cut the bad part away and rewire it. works fine now..

Nick Potter I have no idea, but usually it's printed orengraved somewhere on thepotentiometer itself. Look for three digits like "102" etc. The last digit is the multiplier. 102 would be 10*(10^2), so 1k ohm.

+Mert Karataş If a problem gets solved even temporarily by moving a switch or any potentiometer, it means that the switch or potentiometer have dirty contacts and they need to be cleaned. The easiest way to do this is to buy some contact cleaner, spray some into the switch/potentiometer and push or turn the switch/potentiometer for a dozen times. If you want to clean a switch, any contact cleaner should work. If you want to clean potentiometers, you should get a special kind of cleaner for potentiometers. It has some lube in it. Otherwise your potentiometer may wear out quickly. If this way of cleaning does not help, you can try to desolder and disassemble the switch/potentiometer. Then clean their insides with a q-tip soaked in appropriate contact cleaner. If this is not possible or does not help, the only other option is to replace the defective switch/potentiometer. Regarding the first problem, it could also be caused by bad contact in potentiometers. I'd suggest to clean every potentiometer and see if the problem still exists. Another possibility for both of your problems could be dry solder joints. When you have disassembled the subwoofer, inspect the board for any loose connections between components and the board. If you notice bad solder joints, just re-solder them and test your speaker set afterwards. Have fun repairing your sound system :)

I connected it to another case and it was working so i think that the speaker it good but the problem is in subwoofer case. I took out the main board but now i dont know what to do next. Pajmano For some reason I don't get notified of most of replies to my videos. Sorry for a late reply, but maybe it will help someone in the future. When there is an intermittent connection, sometimes it's possible to see the fault with a naked eye. Wiggle the connector and look for any movement of the solder joint. Even if it doesn't move, it would be a good idea to re-solder the connector.

Adrian Rajnak Honestly, I have no idea. I have never had such a problem. If it is a constant 50/60 Hz hum, I'd suspect filter components in the power supply (probably capacitors). Otherwise it could originate anywhere in the signal path. Please make sure all of the connections are securely connected as loose input/output connections could also cause noise. You can also make sure that there are no electrically "noisy" devices nearby (fridges, fans, drills, anything with a motor).

tacho beselinov  This should be easy to fix if you have a soldering iron. This connector goes tothe subwoofer. I used your picture to show what wires go where. Just don't worry about the connector and solder the subwoofer wires directly. On the first picture, solder the "+" (red) wire from subwoofer to the left side and "-" (black) to the right side. I know this is an old post, but my sound will cut out at higher bass levels/bass knob. It will "pop" then silence for 1 sec beat, then sound comes back. If I lower bass/volume, it's fine.

+Sibin Daniel Sure. Firstly, try to connect another speaker to the rear port to know if the speaker itself is ok. If it doesn't help, you will have to disassemble the speaker/sub where the connectors are located. When you do so, check for bad solder joints or any physical damage to the connector itself. Be sure to check all components for any burn marks or other damage. If everything's ok, I'd suspect the apmlifier IC which is responsible for the broken rear channel. You can check it for shorts and measure it's supply and output voltages. If there is a short or if there is no output at the amplifier IC, you'd have to replace it.

kekagiso I have measured the voltage of my z506 power supply. With no load it is 15.86V. So I guess you could use a 15-16V external power supply and just wire it straight into the amplifier board.

Sure. I can think of several possibilities. Listing them in the order of their likelihood in my opinion. 1. loose or damaged power cord or the cable to the front right speaker where the control switch/knob is located. Check if these cables are connected securely. Try flexing them, especially near the ends. That's where the damage is most likely. 2. The power supply failure. You'd have to disassemble the unit and check if the DC output of the PSU is present. There should be 10-30VDC (don't remember exactly) present at the output of the PSU to the motherboard. 3. A damaged power-on knob/switch. You'd have to disassemble the Front Right speaker to check. 4. Faulty mainboard. For example, there could be a shorted amplifier IC etc.

Usman Naeem So the unit acts like dead now, right? Well then, the first thing I'd do would be take out the power board from the subwoofer. Examine it for any burns, check the fuse and test for shorts. I haven't done it myself though, since there was no problem with the power board in my case.

I never used wd-40 myself but I read somewhere that it's not good for potentiometers. I used a special potentiometer cleaner from an electronic parts store. I guess you could try it at your own risk if you have no other choice.

My z506 system is malfunctioning. When I raise the volume, there is a threshold where upon reaching all of the speakers will cut out momentarily, then they will come back on for a second or two, only to cut right back out again. This pattern will repeat unless I turn the volume down below that threshold. Just so happens that the threshold is far too low of a volume for me to utilize. I'm assuming the problem must exist somewhere on the board in the subwoofer. Anyone have any ideas where the problem may reside?
