For anyone using GIMP 2.9 or 2.10 and thinking this doesn't work. It does. You just now need to select "Drop Shadow (legacy)". It's also under "Filters/Light and Shadow". It seems they changed the way Drop Shadow works and the new DS will not put a shadow on the inside of a selection. Thankfully the old method is still available, now marked as "legacy". Hope this helps someone.

Thank you Nick, this video is definitely one of the easiest tutorial for wood carving. You're using the layer option. you won't see this very often in a tutorial and that's why i like it.

I've learned an incredible amount thanks to you... I appreciate that you're willing to share your knowledge with everyone that wants to learn Gimp. However, I find myself stuck often (and still stuck on this tutorial) likely due to the updates in Gimp between the date that this video was made and currently. For example, the "Drop Shadow" dialog is very different --- just for starters. Is there any online documentation that I can look at that can explain these changes/updates so that I may finally be able to follow older tutorials?

In gimp 2.10.6 there is a new drop shadow filter that works different: i cannot apply drop shadow bellow selections, it must be with a new layer with the inverted shape. I know that the legacy filter is still available, don't know how long, but you could create a review of this effect using the new filter? It may help us to adapt to the new drop shadow

Hi nick! great video as always! however I gotta question at the part of filters-drop shadow settings, I noticed the moment you set that it automatically adds another layer, but while I was doing the same thing nothing much happened to my logo. I’m using Gimp 2.10 by the way

Oh I forgot to tell that the wallpaper I was using is the photo that I took same as wood board with a lighter exposure though, maybe that affected the drop shadow setting?

I love your vids. But one criticism here if you don't mind. The shadows of the wood carving do make the drop-down more natural, but overall, you can notice that it is a fake image, because all the objects do not have the same shadow intensity or direction (here: the bowl). The bowl's shadow goes in the opposite direction. When you (anyone reading this comment) create shadows or any other lighting effects, make sure they all follow the same direction, focal point and intensity. That's all :)

I would try using the legacy drop shadow filter. I think I had a similar problem when I tried using the newer one. GIMP has released major updates since I made this video.

I have used this tutorial several times. But since updating to Gimp 2.10 it doesn't work anymore. Also not by using Drop Shadow (legacy). Can't seem to figure out why. I have followed every step, even used the same pictures as in the video. Still no success.

@Try Fox There's another video by Logos By Nick called "Pressed Leather Effect". This works for me and you can apply that also to other material like wood or stone. Try it out.
