I have just downloaded Gimp just to do this effect. What a world we live in... Gimp free, inkscspe free and Nicks tutorials free. Wow! Let that sink in. Thanks to all 3 of the above. Much appreciated guys.

I just wanted to stop by and tell you that this is the very first tutorial I followed when I first downloaded GIMP almost two years ago. Because you did such an amazing job at being clear and thorough, I believed I could learn GIMP, which I thought to be an insurmountable task at the time. I had never used any kind of photo editing or digital art software before. Now I use GIMP and Inkscape (also thanks to your tutorials) daily to create designs for my home decor shop. You never know when you're going to inspire someone to try something new. Thank you for all of your wonderful tutorials.

Gimp seems to have come along in recent years. I used to find it really restrictive but looking at your tutorials it shows how far it has come.
@westicles92892 жыл бұрын
To be fair I never found it very restrictive. I think the big thing is it's ui wasn't as clean as photoshop and the plug-ins are differently named so it can be confusing for someone used to photoshop or any other editor. They've done a great job cleaning it up and making it more user friendly over the years

Went freelancer and was looking for a cheaper alternative to Photoshop. I've been an Adobe girl for the last 6 years so wasn't sure something else would be as good as that software. You totally blew my mind! THANKS A LOT for these videos, really! It feels so good to know there are alternatives out there, it makes new startings easier :)

in case somebody is wondering "why can't i apply layer mask" at 10:00 ??? it is because you have not added it. the version nick is using probably didn't need to add the mask separately. so, you will need to add the layer mask after you apply the gradient tool and before starting to apply the brush tools, somewhere around 4:20. how do you add it? right click on the new layer you created with white color, and select add layer mask. and then continue with rest of the tutorial.

Hey Nick, could you help me? I followed every step completely through, and right when I went to use the brush I won't show up. GIMP registers it as if I did use it, but it never shows the smoke after clicking. Edit: Never Mind, figured it out.... great tutorial!

I've been using gimp for years now and this is the first time stumbling upon your videos, awesome work man! will definitely be taking a look at your other videos. :D I just had one question and I've used this before in my other work but i never really quite understood it, I was wondering what exactly adding a layer mask does, like why do you have to add a layer mask then apply it when you could just make a new layer?
@dahltonbybee70116 жыл бұрын
just info from what i've gathered but making it a mask makes it so the back image shows through. I skipped that part the 1st time on accident and couldnt figure out how he made the face come thru the smoke, if you watch his skull video, just adding it as a new layer makes it a solid image ontop of another

@tearstoneactual97734 жыл бұрын
It should be noted that you do not have to use the exact same brushes to create this effect (i.e. #2...#22. Play around with it.) It should also be noted this is not a GIMP exclusive and this works in other software, like Photoshop, Medibang, Clip Studio, etc. However, GIMP is still a wonderful, free option, and would be the most expedient as far as free options go.
@karenbennett1876 жыл бұрын
I’m new to Gimp and this is a great tutorial to see the different kinds of things you can do in that program. Have you seen the watercolor splatter silhouettes that are all over Etsy and Pinterest? I would love to learn how to do that. Any chance you could do a tutorial for that? Thanks!
