Lois Lane's Changing Appearance in Superman II

Margot Kidder's thinner face, different hair, and new teeth make for some continuity issues, sometimes within the same scene.

You can clearly see the big differences between how Margot Kidder looked in her Lois Lane scenes during the Donner cut and the Lester version, in the Donner footage, she looked very beautiful with lovely long dark and elegant clothes but in the Lester stuff, she looked noticeably thinner with frumpy hair and a very boring wardrobe. It's like seeing two completely different actresses even though it's the same person. Such a shame what happened behind the scenes because i always looked at the main reasons why the Superman movies were so legendary as her Lois Lane portrayal is so iconic and for me, the best she ever looked was in the two Donnor movies. RIP the best Lois Lane ever

Wow! I just noticed the changes in between the different scenes. After all the years I’ve watched it. I’ve always thought something was different about her from the Superman The movie and Superman 2.

She was vocal in her support of Richard Donner's directing after he was fired by the Salkinds. Kidder obviously has a fixed clause in the contract that she couldn't easly get rid of, so she ended up making a deal with the producers where she got more money, otherwise Kidder would have simply quit. She probably went into depression during the filming of the parts one and two and also lost weight and drank regulary and also used drugs and smoking to alleviate the frustration, which was also the reason why she acted up in some scenes wore a wig and otherwise she have in the Donner-version red lipstick and her hair was natural.

Margot was beautiful in Donner scenes. She wasn't looking pretty in Lester scenes, also it was visible that she was doing the film feeling very annoyed by the replacement of directors. The quality of her acting was inferior compared to what she displayed in Superman 1 and also Superman 2 Donner scenes. I find that all the "romantic" scenes in Lester's Superman 2 are horrible, because of that. They completely lack the magic of the romantic moments found in Superman 1, especially the memorable and beautiful flying sequence.

I heard Margot Kidder had filmed the The Amityville Horror in the two year difference and that's why she looks gaunt & tired in the reshoots.

That was by Christmas 1978, she later starred in Paul Mazursky's "Willie & Phil" during summer 1979 which only got released in August 1980 USA/CAN later in 1981 for UK & AUSTRALIA.

I think a big issue in the reshoot is her newly capped teeth change the shape of her mouth. Not a good look.

Got her teeth capped, smokes, booze? Drugs? And poor hair/make up all combined to make her look older and a lot less attractive in the Lester footage. She was sexy AF in the Donner footage shot in 1977.

Margot is the quintessential looking Lois in the Donner cut. Her acting is even spunkier, her voice higher, and her tears on the terrace very pretty. Not many women can wear red lipstick well, but she rocks it! However, I prefer the lovely white nightgown she wore in the Fortress of Solitude in Lester’s cut as opposed to Superman’s shirt and tube socks she sported in Donner’s version. The former was elegant and bridal; the latter tacky and indecent. Not a good look if you want to impress your future dead father-in-law. The way that Jor-el glares at her is like, “Really, Kal-el? You’re giving up everything for this?”

Apparently the production of Amityville horror between Superman, one and two really affected her and put a lot of stress on her, which made her lose a bunch of weight

Troy: much of Superman II was shot during production of the original. When Richard Donner was fired, Richard Lester was brought in to finish the movie. Nearly two years had passed, which explains Margot's different look. She was thinner, had capped her teeth, and her hair had changed.

You can also see differences in Chris Reeve, especially in the final scenes in the Fortress (when they needed Hackman in the shot) - they were clearly shot very early during production of 1 and 2, he looks far less bulky, they haven't quite got his hair right yet, and Reeve's acting is not as stoic as it would be later on. The 'Luthor you poisonous snake!' line seems very un-Superman-like to me (even if in the script he was pretending) and I always find it jarring, I suspect that if Donner had completed 2 they would have reshot that in a different way.

Margot Kidder is very unique in beauty and genuine in acting. Blakely seemed pretty good too for a possible second choice. She had the spunky attitude.
