1/2” is all you need. Buy your foam/resin online as well as chip brushes. If you really want to use treated wood make sure you give it weeks to dry out. Or the glass will delaminate

Having rebuilt my boat when you are buying Resin from the store, always pop the top off of it and make sure BOTH of the tubes of hardener is there. People come in and steal them

All that old fiberglass should have been ground down first with a grinder . That new stuff won’t stick to Un-ground older fiberglass. May last a little while but it will delaminate over time. You need a rough ground surface for it to adhere

This is great! Good job! Saw another boat build and the person laid the deck, cut holes in it and then poured the foam. He kept the cut out pieces for the holes and put them back in place after the foam expanded. Keep up the good work!

what about the rotten stringers leading to the bow and stern??? if you put fresh wood in there with rotted ends its just going to rot out again, you really need to pop the cap off and get all up in there, i know its a lot more work, but better to do it 100% right than half ass it, this is like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound.

You should look into having closed cell foam sprayed in that boat mu man, it doesnt hold any water/moisture and I know when I sprayed it on the inside of barns, it makes the structure 300% stronger, just trying to help out

The foam is only there to keep it floating if it capsizes. It doesn't add to the buoyancy of the boat. Kitty Litter will work wonders in drying out the hard to reach areas. Put it in there, vacuum it out. Repeat.

As a boat builder i find this so funny to watch 😂 in my opinion id say you should have popped the cap off the top and completely redo the whole deck . Plus you would've had access to the transom

As a non boat builder and very little understanding of how to rebuild a boat all I can think is “what about the other 1/3 of the wood and foam you haven’t exposed… you’re ok leaving all that rotten wood in the rest of the boat?”

And typically if you want to seal treated lumber you should let it weather for 6 months minimum or it won’t take the sealer well and the chemicals they treated the wood with originally will try to seep out from under.

Great progress on the boat!!! One question though, wouldn’t the stringers run all the way up and down the boat under the cap? Wouldn’t you need to replace the stringers under the front and rear deck?

This was my question too! I'm concerned there might be a lot more rotten wood and waterlogged foam inside that boat waiting to wreak havoc! I am not a boat builder by any means, but I have done a fair share of carpentry. I have to imagine those stringers go further than what they replaced. Hope it works out!!!

LOJO, check out TotalBoat's marine closed cell foam insulation. It comes in different weights but the 2lb foam is perfect for general insulation throughout the hull. Be warned though, reaction time is about 30-45sec and the 2lb expands by like 300-500% by volume! Pour quick and stand back! Trim off the excess once it cures. 👌

When you foam the floor, go ahead and install the plywood to the stringers. Then go to U.S composites and order your foam. Then use a hole saw to put holes in the floor but save the holes. Pour the foam inside the holes and hold the cores over the holes as the foam comes up. After all foam is poured, glue the plugs back Then tab and lay glass over the floor

Should go with high density foam for core and for stringers used coosa board , definitely would’ve cut all old glass out and done it correctly used epoxy instead of poly and vacuum bagged your repair areas that way the first wake or wave you hit it doesn’t delaminate beneath your feet good luck man

^This! Coosa is really nice to work with too. Some west system and marine grade plywood would be another option, but coosa is definitely the way to go for strength, longevity, and weight reduction. Seeing this almost makes me want to get an old bass boat and redo it, but I already have enough projects between cars and boats.

You probably have to take the cap off. The wood and insulation is probably gonna be rotting throughout the whole boat. Or at least cut out the rest of the floor because in order for the 3/4 ply to line up your going to have to cut the rest out anyways so its not un even.

Oscillating saws work great for fiberglass cutting, well worth the investment. Also, get chip brushes from a harbor freight if you need to throw them away.

I redid the bottom of my boat on time, we redid all the stringers with pressure treated 2 x 6 and fiberglass them in place and then for the deck I use starboard, star Road probably be really expensive right now.

I have a concern. I just saw the base get fiberglassed to the floor, if in the future someone wants to separate them there will be an issue. Remember that in the previous episode the pro said that they are separate pieces. having the ability to remove the top section to work on the transom, could be an issue that can't be fixed without major demolition unless redone now. 16:18

Resin doesn’t stick good on treated wood cause the wood is wet. Kiln dried Doug fir fir stringers. Also, for transom. There’s a new pour in transom with good reviews. I’ve seen a few videos of it online

Also, stringers stretch the length of the hull. Theres a large portion in front and behind the main deck/floor. Popping the cap is going to be your beat bet to get it done right. Also, you’ll want to do several layers of fiber glass on the stringers and transom. At the end of the day, it also depends on how much money you really feel like investing. Complete rebuilds are no joke on the wallet.

Look for a online pdf called west systems boat rebuilding. It's based on using epoxy resin, which I think is superior to poly resin, but the ideas and how to approach thing are good and solid. Its the basis I used for my rebuild and now it's better than new
