Lok Sabha Elections: Voting Begins Amid EVM-VVPAT Case: Is The EVM System Foolproof?

First Phase of Lok Sabha Election is being held in India. The largest Democracy started voting today in 21 states. Many celebrities, leaders have casted their votes. But this time the polling is being held amid conflicts over Electronic Voting Machines or EVMs. A legal battle over EVMs is being held and petitioners have sought for 100% cross verification of the votes casted on EVMs with paper slips generated through the VVPAT system. Many suggestions to revert the ballot voting system also have come up from the petitioners comparing it with the European nations. Well, such comparisons should not be made is what the court said because West Bengal’s population is more than the entire population of Germany, the court noted. So, is this system actually tamper proof? Pallavi Sharma explains.

As I can see, this thread is going emotive. That's not going to lead anywhere. Let's see the issue logically. - There is no system in the world, that can't be tampered with - EVM, VVPAT, Ballot box, computer, TV, signals in railways... The list is endless. - So, we have to settle for the closet to "tamper proof". - How do we do it? By manual checks, physical security, making it impossible with one person to tamper, CC TV etc. One natural check is the polling agents of all the candidates are there, keeping an eye. - It is established mathematically that a small sample size gives surprisingly close results to that of checking the whole set. The bigger the sample size, the closer it is to the actual. - So when we use EVM with proper procedures so that we are at a confidence level which is the same or slightly better level than paper Ballot, that should be enough. Whichever booth has VVPAT, the voters themselves have verified - literally lakhs of them, and with randomly sending such machines across the country. The main question is: "Are we at a level of confidence better than paper Ballot? To me at least, it looks to be so.

The results are announced only after voting happens in every single constituency across the country. Your state did your voting doesnt mean other other states are done with it too.. Conducting elections is a time consuming process. It happens on different dates on different states because of limited resources to manage the election booths. Can the vvpat be programmed to stopped to print if the last print was from same button? Yes. Can the machine be programmed to print same sign from multiple buttons? Yes. Does all the VVPat have unique ID number? No. Can the vvpat after being printed roll forward n backward from any particular button? Yes. Can the vvpat work normally with transparent glass? Yes. It can be easily evaluated by these questions that the EC is culprit n cheating n not fair.
