Wonderful demonstration of the additional added features. Hope to see more of it on your layout with coaches.

Thank you for you presentation of your XL5 installation. was there a big sound quality difference between the previous Märklin decoder and the XL5 ? Did you change the speaker ? Best regards from Paris

I left the original Marklin speaker. XL5 can drive two speakers, but I did not want to drill through the chassis for a second speaker. The sound quality is much better. But to be honest, the original was a quite old system. There is a difference in the sound quality, ESU uses 16bit samples, I think the old was only 8 bit, so there is an audibled hiss at the silent sections. But most noticably, 5XL has lot more sample memory, there are a lot more sounds you can activate, you can configure lot of sounds to be automatic, for example the compression comes on and off from time-to-time. If you want realistic driving, 5XL also has a drive hold (if I remember correctly the name) function, where the speed of the loco stays constant, and moving the throttle only changes the sound. So you can simulate as the loco is coming up hill and working hard to maintain speed. Or coasting running down hill. And probably there is a few more smaller stuff.
