Hi Bill, In defence of Strathpefferjunction of having to cut and fit the gear. He did cut the gears to the correct size for me after I made a mess of cutting them my self. He sent me 4 new gears, 2 cut and 2 uncut free of charge. He also told me that if he was asked he would fit the gear for you. After seeing you use the guitar spanner I have ordered on straight away. What a great tool for removing wheels. Once again a great video. Very informative.

I had wanted to order a kit from Strathpeffer Junction myself but was always out of stock of the one I wanted, so having seen this video on 18th March, I straightaway ordered 2 from Diesel Trains for my class 117's and so far as at 11th April, they still haven't been posted out, order on website still says "Processing" and now he is out of stock for all motors, so I can't say if it has worked for me yet. His website states "I would like to make it clear to everyone that this is a hobby and should in no way be mistaken for a business". So I will just have to wait and see, as I guess he is making new stock.

Nice one,i actually managed to get a Lima Class 33 yesterday for a price i was happy to pay.It was listed as used but with a good motor,which had been serviced,checked and ran at all speeds very well...as soon as i got it out of the box i noticed that one of the drive gears that goes to the front wheels wasn't there! So i messaged the seller and told him,his reply was it had never been there,so i pointed out he should have mentioned that in the listing.So now he says he has a complete chassis/motor which he will send me free.So we wait and see...

I just looked at his website today 5 Jan 2024 and the prices for these are fantastic ... even with the conversion rate and postage to Melbourne Australia... I might look into getting a few soon and possibly a few sets of his traction tires.

Hi, I have bought 2 of the motors for my Lima 117's at £12 each, which was lucky, as the other motor was out of stock for Lima 55's and 37's, so I will get them when back in stock. Thanks for letting us know, I like my Lima's but the motors are too noisy, so these now ones will be great. :-)

Great to see completely no standard motors being used. Can this conversion be applied to tender driven ringfield motors?

I guess I'll find out of I need any of these when my Lima locos come out of hibernation. As far as I remember I never had problems with the diesels. It was the steam locos that caused grief. The plastic chassis and "free" centre wheel sets were just horrible on them. I had to weather them brutally on the chassis to hide as much as possible. It's a pity because the shell of the 94XX pannier is actually quite good, certainly needs one of these kits though. The 45XX 2-6-2T is much better all round but has a horrible motor and will also get one of these. My only question is are they serviceable? Or when the brushes get worn out or the commutator is full of crude do you have no other choice but to bin them and get another one?

Do you recommend the CD motors bill rather than ringfield

Nice conversion but the whole thing looks a bit lightweight for a locomotive that should be capable of hauling 15 coaches. Would it be possible to fit two motor bogies?
@smithge4uk3 жыл бұрын
The CD motors are very torquey - try holding a drive tray in or out why asking the drive to open or close. Yes you could fit two powered CD motor bogies, but only really on Hornby locomotives as the way the chassis is designed there is the same aperture at either end. As the current draw is much lower, having 2 wouldn't reduce top speed unlike 2 Ringfield together, you still may want to fit the resistor..... If you notice with Lima locomotives the non-powered end doesn't have an aperture so would have to resort to major surgery cutting out and shaping your own. You would also need a 2nd donor power bogie to provide the housing. I believe it has successfully been done on 2 HST power cars to mimic protoypical running.

Are those CD motors very different from each other? The ones I got were much too fast, and had sloppy bearings that rattled like crazy, JUNK. Now who makes a brushless drive .. a tiny 2804 brushless would fit fine in the ringfield casings.
@adventuresinmodelrailroading3 жыл бұрын
You should probably fasten the weight to the chassis. That way it won't rattle around.

Hi Bill , is that a 12v motor in that kit ?
@smithge4uk3 жыл бұрын
CD drive motors are rated at 6 volts. The resistor is supplied to be inserted to reduce the 12v 'train set' voltage into 6v. Otherwise they are capable of a scale 200mph+ !!!
