Iowa is 1/3rd a Rust Belt State. From the Eastern Border to the line of Burlington, Cedar Rapids, and Waterloo, it is factory towns, like Ohio, Northern Indiana, and Michigan. West of there, it is farm country. You'd expect the farm country to be Republican and the industrial cities Democratic. When Trump corralled the working class vote, it was a foregone conclusion that Iowa would vote the same as Ohio and Indiana --- Republican end-to-end, with a minimum of +10 for Trump. If Ann Selzer didn't know that, then she is colossally ignorant of her own home state; either that or her last poll was a ruse to buck up morale for Democrats purposed to create a bandwagon effect of convincing undecided voters to go with the "winning" team. btw. I've voted in Florida since 1998. I predicted it would go 6 points for Trump in 2024, as a continuation trend of the 1.3% margin in 2016 and 3.3% in 2020. It went 13% for Trump, the same as Iowa. I missed the magnitude, but knew the direction. Only an idiot or a person with intentional misdirection would have forecast Florida would go to Harris by 3. So why did Selzer make that claim for an even more pro-Trump electorate in Iowa?

As someone who has published scientific research in academic journals including survey research, here's my take. The Iowa poll results were way off, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there was something underhanded going on. Every trained scientific researcher knows that no matter how sound your research methodology or sampling strategy is, there is always the chance that the results from your data might be an anomaly. When conducting a poll or a survey in general, you can't survey everyone in the population to which you wish to generalize, so you obtain a hopefully representative sample from that population in order to try to extrapolate the findings from the sample to the larger population. Typically, researchers view a .05 probability level as acceptable in order to conclude whether any result obtained is statistically significant. In the case of a poll, this does not mean that such a result is a true or actual indication of how the population will vote. It means that the pollster has a confidence level of 95% that the results will reflect how the population will actually vote. This also means that 5% of the time, the results will be inaccurate. So on average, if you conduct the same poll using the exact same methodology 100 times, you would expect 95 of those polls to produce substantially similar results within a normal distribution and 5 to produce outlier results that fall in the extreme tails of the distribution. It doesn't happen often but even the soundest of sampling methods doesn't guarantee against an outlier sample due to random chance. In terms of the notorious Oct. 24 Iowa poll, although Harris was +3% over Trump, these results were still within the margin of error (+ or - 3.4%), which according to Selzer's documentation was at the 5% level. So her results weren't even outside the normal distribution, although they would appear to be very close to the threshold cutoff. In addition, her sample of 808 appeared to be skewed towards Democrats. Specifically, 41% voted for Biden in 2020 vs 40% for Trump even though Trump won Iowa in 2020 53% to 45%, and 45% had voted or would vote Democratic for House of Representatives in 2024 vs 44% Republican. Moreover, in her Sept. 24 poll, which had Trump at +4 to Harris (47 to 43), 45% voted Trump in 2020 vs. 41% Biden, and 52% intended to vote Republican for House vs. 44% Democratic. In other words, her Sept. sample, which skewed Republican flipped to skew Democrat in her Oct. poll. In this light, it doesn't seem so surprising that Harris was +3 vs. Trump. So to me it seems her off-base poll results can be traced in large part to sampling. The bigger problem that I see isn't with the poll per se, but with how people who have no training or background in survey research or statistics interpret the results and make inferences from them. Unfortunately, a lot of people view poll results as gospel and run with it without looking behind the numbers or how those numbers were produced. They hear Harris is somehow up 3% in Iowa when a month ago she was down 4% so it must mean to the Dems that she has suddenly surged ahead and will win not only Iowa but every other Rust Belt state and to the Republicans that the poll is fake and is being used to manipulate the election. I don't see how Trump is going to win any lawsuit over Selzer, especially since she never claimed that her poll meant that Trump was going to lose Iowa by 3 points as Trump stated in the video. Is there no one on Trump's team that understands survey methodology and statistical analysis? If not, I'm available for consultation.
