I actually wore lolita in public yesterday by accident. I had dressed in lolita in my house just to lift my spirits. My boyfriend came to pick me up. I thought we were just going to his house, but he quickly informed me that we were going to the grociery store to pick up food. So I ended up walking around Aldi in a full lolita coord.

Just wanted to add that it's important that people recognize that it's okay to take up space and to just be yourself regardless what clothing you wear! @rynthorn15515 жыл бұрын
Hey, a seamstress here! You're pretty spot on explaining shirring. It's basically just a series of straight lines sewn into a piece of fabric with elastic bobbin thread. And it is majestic and wonderful. It should be in way more pieces, lolita and otherwise.

The point of Lolita and every type of fashion is to express and celebrate who you are. Being a tomboy lolita or a plus sized lolita doesn't make you any less. You can play up or subdue whatever aspects of who you are or who you want to be at any point. You can wear coveralls and country wear one day and super frilly cords the next if thats what makes you happy. Fashion is there to elevate your experiences in life, not to deteact from them. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
@LilyLewis7715 жыл бұрын
thank you for the zipper rant!!! I hate invisible zippers so much, they're just impossible to get over a waistband because the thickness of fabric does not play nice with invisible zippers at all. but hey they're less obvious so I think that's why brands use them all the time :/ And yeah the second dress has... maid-chan vibes. (rant incoming) Idk, personally I don't feel like Atelier Pierrot is a great 'I wore lolita for a day' brand since they're much more aristo than the typical lolita you see. The standard lolita silhouette is knee length, super poofy skirt, with a bow/bonnet/maxi pad headdress on top. Ate Pie tends to have longer, much less voluminous silhouettes, and the mask headdress is very unconventional (it's very beautiful, just rather uncommon) for lolita. I get that they're very kind to work with her and let her wear a dress for free for a day, but I feel like it's not a great starter set. If cost is an issue, closet child and Bodyline would have very inexpensive things for her to try on and buy in person (like with the shoes) and you can find cheap lolita on Taobao and lace market as well, or she could partner up with a lolita in Japan and borrow from her wardrobe. I think Safiya did a lot better in this regard because while her end result wasn't the most typical lolita she did go to a few different shops and tried on the much more typical lolita silhouette that AP has, and she featured rinrindoll along with various street snaps and instagrams of other lolitas. Atelier Pierrot is beautiful and super elegant but when you're only wearing it for a day to showcase the fashion I feel like a more standard silhouette makes more sense, even if it's not the most 'original' or whatever.

Recently, a zipper on one of my Angelic Pretty dresses broke and I was so excited to buy a better zipper and replace it! The bodice actually feels more sturdy when I wear that dress now.
@10puppyluv5 жыл бұрын
Okay so since after a quick glance i didnt see anyone explaining shirring(?) So its basically just fabric sewn to elastic so when the elastic fully stretched out the fabric would lay flat but has the ruffle look when the fabric isnt pulled completely taut. The nice part of shirring in lolita dresses is theres different layers (top to bottom of the back of the dress's blouse section) so it adheres more nicely to the wearer's frame and doesnt squish boobs that arent AA cup
@leighl80325 жыл бұрын

Hey! Costume designer and lolita here. Shirring is when you take elastic and stretch it along the back of a garment sewing it down. You then do mutable rows of elastic down the back of the garment or around the midsection. This allows the dress to fit many different body types and they are easier to get into on your own. That’s how shirring works! 😁

This is a topic that has come up a lot in some private feminist groups I've been part of, I do believe this is also something that comes with how women and girls are raised to believe that we need to shrink ourselves for the benefit of others, and how we are made to feel rude or impolite if we don't give up space to make others comfortable, as opposed to how there are many men do not feel this way, and are in fact happy/proud to take up space, or simply don't mind when they do. I can imagine this feeling is compounded in much worse ways for those who are plus sized, and those folks deserve better. Our bodies do not exist for anyone else's consumption, everyone is allowed to visibly exist without apology

I felt like I can't wear lolita bc it's nearly non existant in my country. It's still tough but I plan to order from DevilInspired when I can. It said in their website they ship to my country and I'm so happy you talked about them, I'm not from the US or Europe so it's harder to find this stuff. Right now I'm building my steampunk 'closet' and I hope to build a steampunk lolita one as well. I dissagree with you about the tiny hats thoXD I like both regular sized and tiny hats. The cool thing about tiny hats is that I can wear one and still show my sidecut^^

i think little hats look better when you wear pants rather than a dress or skirt for your lolita coord..

I think it might be okay if you wear it on a large styled wig.
@natsunohoshi79525 жыл бұрын
@@nekokitty90 I think if people want to wear little hats this is where they should look to historic fashion. You are right to suggest a large, styled wig, I think, because women who did wear little hats would have their hair up and often added volume with things like hair rats. So an appropriately large hair style would provide the balance Lor is talking about.

well its not just not wanting to be film, for stores. designers dont want to risk having a copycat design of their piece out there, for various reasons.

Overall I love how positive you are and that you don't bash on her but I really disliked it when you went all " don't wear little hats". Like..at first you go" oh ,don't listen to society,make your style,wear what you want" and then " BUT DONT WEAR TINY HATS". I mean..maybe I am especially offended because I've always loved tiny hats and because I don't feel like it makes the head bigger at all,in fact I think my head would look twice as big if I wore what you wore in the video on my head instead but idk... going "do what you want but don't do that" just defeats the purpose of all the pep talk from before.

It was really interesting and helpful to hear you talk about the thing with shirring, because I'm a more plus-sized person and often times I can't find a lot of jfashion, lolita or other styles that would fit me, but looking for pieces with full shirring could help !!

Yeahhh but this falls in like with her other videos. Aki Dearest likes trying things and hobbies, especially weeb/weeb adjacent things, and the videos are usually 'there's this thing, it sounds neat, I'm gonna try it, here's what I'm expecting, oh look we're doing it, this is fun, here's where you can go to do it yourself, that was fun here's some pictures bye!'

I have a beautiful blue gingham dress I bought from my friend Jillian (aka Pixielocks 🥰)and it has the same zipper getting stuck at the waist band problem, even though it’s not lolita (aka with a big skirt) so it’s probably the amount of fabric/ tension in that area

The. Zippers. AHHG. The zipper for one of my fave dresses busted the day I was gonna wear it to my office party. I was so mad. But luckily some lolita friends gave recommendations on where to go to get it repaired. But please. No more crappy zippers that always get caught where the bodice meets the skirt. PLEASE.

Hi Lor! There are several methods of shirring one way is to sew with elastic thread in the bobbin (the bottom thread on a sewing machine) another way is to create channels and thread elastic through. And a third is to sew an elastic on one size of the material and you pull the elastic tight as you sew and keep the material flat (this way seems to be how a lot of bodyline dresses are shirred

Lolita is alot of work and Aki is the type of girl that just wants to wear jeans and a hoodie and leave the house. So people that say they "can't" do lolita are usually people that just don't want to dedicate their time to it. I would love to wear lolita but it's already difficult for me to match me jeans and hoodie when I get up in the morning.

So happy to see you reviewing Aki's video. You two are two of my favorite KZbinrs so it's really interesting to see this kind of crossover. I was surprised at the end too and expected more commentary. Also idk if filming was limited but it would've been nice to get slower pans of the clothing and the cafe.

While I’m not a Lolita lady, I do wear vintage style dresses (rockabilly mostly) and I’m plus sized so I’ll feel great until I’m sitting somewhere and I feel like my skirt is too floofy and spreads too far out as my hips are already bigger. I’ve learned that the space I “take up” isn’t anything to be afraid of and as long as I’m not being an ass about sitting somewhere life is chill
