Lollar announced some time after this video was made that “Sixty-Four” Is the new name for the old “Blackface” set. At times in the video, that set is referred to as “BF”. I think this is a great move for Lollar, as the name is easily misunderstood, and the quality of the pickups transcends the unfortunate history of that term.

I like them too! I think they have more mids, which might cause it to sound a bit muddier the more fuzz you add, albeit fatter which is good for RHCP.

It’s probably best to stick with Fender and Seymour Duncan pickups since it already been proven that they fit well in song mixes and tested a thousand times

Wow, very professional comparison, so much work! Great. I must say that the MIM is all over impressive good, no reason to change.

Great demo, thank you for this! The MIM bridge pickup was all around great. For clean I say BF pickups win. For dirty rhythm, MIM. For lead, specials. Additionally, for all position 2 and 4 sounds, BFs win.

The difference is pretty slight. It really comes down to what you want to hear. Nobody else will care.

The sixty four pups sound so alive!!!! And the Special's extra output and compression really shines in the bridge, from clean through all levels of distortion. Gonna go with the 64 special set, thanks so much

Mim still all round best end second was special but pretty bad .bf came in a distant third. Try Seymour and fenders.
@haskitt

If you like the mim, you should try the fralin steel poles 43 (or 42) or McNelly S-Bar pickups. They are that same p90 style construction with bar magnets instead of pole mags. Or check out the Gemini Suprocaster for the Bridge. Neither Fender nor Duncan make a single coil Strat pickup with bar magnets.

My dude, you know how to do a demo. I LOVE that you play the same thing each time, rather than trying to show us how many notes you can play in a second. Thank you for being kind to our brains. I wanted to ask - do you have an opinion on the fender custom shop 54 pickups? I am wondering how well they stack up against the tweeds? Cheers!

In all of these cuts, the order is Mim, BF then Sp. Except higher gain bridge you list the BF then the Mim. I'm just wondering, are they mislabeled or was the order just backwards for that bit?
@jaseyraw8843
@jaseyraw8843 3 жыл бұрын
To my ear it sounds like the label is correct and the order is just different for that one
@haskitt
@haskitt 3 жыл бұрын
Good question - i do triple check them but it’s easy to mislabel! yeah the order is just different. you can see the mim is staggered pole on the one labeled mim and those pickups are actually staggered… all the lollars are flat pole.

After getting to play recently a 92 Mexi strat still with original pickups and then hearing this video, it seems to me that the Mexi strat pickups sound like they have a built in Tube Screamer built in.

Hi Scott. Thanks so much for these videos. I asked in your Lollar vid, but it's actually the Blackfaces that I'm specifically interested in. I'm just wondering if these BFs were flatpole or staggered? Thanks again!

Yo las oigo igual en el equipo de salón. Tal vez las lollar tengan un poco más de brillo. Buena ejecución. Al tacto no sé que tal.

Some MIM's are great but those are... yikes. If those were my pickups, I'd jam a toothpick in my switch so I physically couldn't reach positions 3-5. I might even consider a switch to bass. Love these tone comparisons. Not only is your selection of The Nearness of You a wonderful choice for clean leads, the fact you always use the same song (and guitar) really gives an apples-to-apples utility across all your videos.
@haskitt

Yeah I was shocked how big and bassy they were. I think they’ve cleaned up these mims more recently. Cheers!

I feel like the 64s, when compared to the MiMs, have a much more defined and tighter bottom end, and a more open top end as well. I'd want my strat to sound brighter rather than warmer, which is why the 64's win even though the MiM's sound very good too.
@haskitt
@haskitt 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the 64 are a great upgrade while still retaining at least some of that higher output of the mim.

Great demo!, is it worth it to change my MIM pickups to the tweed pickups? 👀
@haskitt
@haskitt 2 жыл бұрын
If you want more headroom and way more clarity then yes! The only possible disadvantage of going tweeds from MIM (depending on the mim) is they're just lower output. I happen to love that about them but some people like higher output.

That’s not true. Ask the sound clips are mim vs lollar. I compare the construction of the kleins to the mim because that’s what I had on hand at the time. Kleins are the same construction style as the lollars.
