Oh, captive foraging! So important for animal enrichment and especially for pet birds (who would spend hours a day looking for food, as opposed to moving 3" over on a perch). Can you do an episode on captive foraging and things like puzzle feeders? ps: how fun, painting!

Skunks are so cute. There are a few skunks that live somewhere near my house and end up in my side yard, hunting around my trash bins. One night, I was walking through the side yard to the backyard and following behind what I thought was my cat, but when I stopped and bent down to pet her, I realized that it wasn't her, it was one of the resident skunks. I also startled one the other day when I went to put out the trash. When I realized what it was that I had startled, I quickly went one way and it went the other, then we both paused to look back at each other from around the corner of the house. I'm counting myself very lucky that I haven't been sprayed. Oh, and these skunks are buddies with the neighborhood cats, my neighbor has caught them hanging out together on a couple occasions.

As long as you recognize the signs and back away before it escalates, you should be able to avoid being sprayed every time. I think it was Jessi who explained the escalation of body language and also that spraying is far from the first response to a potential threat.

I have a breed of dog that _needs_ to be kept busy with puzzles and games, and this is absolutely perfect. It's also really fun seeing video's like this, especially with animals that are traditionally considered 'pests' where I'm from.

I was thinking the same for my dog. I'm not sure I need the artwork but testing her sense of smell will be interesting. BTW, I have 3 Australian Cattle dogs and they need a job to do. :)

Hey if this helps: When its hot out I like to get one of our empty flower beds nice and muddy. Then I take a few plastic Easter eggs, fill them with treats, and half bury them in the mud. I also like to put other obstacles in the way every now and then for a good challenge. As I have a beagle/poodle mix, sloshing through the mud keeps him cool and really works out his excess energy.

:) you are talking about my back yard. For whatever reason the 3 females I have kill any living thing. I've had to put up an inner-fence to separate the dogs area from the "green" area. i.e. my yard is a mudpit when it rains, like now. :) I like your idea of hiding the food in Easter Egg containers. Your animals tolerate the wet paint so well. I haveseen cats who step on wet paint and for the next few minutes shake their paws as they walk, trying to get the paint off.

I would really love to have a pet skunk. I think you're one of the prettiest animals in the animal kingdom, but I feel bad making them go through surgery to take the smell gland off. Does it hurt them to go for the surgery? Do you think while for them to get a adapted without there smell gland?

I can kind see her point. She prefers to get the animals a place where you can feel comfortable and be fed but not take them out of their natural environment.

Hey, a lot of people own pets, more or less exotic and take great care of them :D read a lot about an animal, talk with owners/breeders and stay open minded (remember that individual animals in a species can have different personalities, tempers etc). My opinion is that you can own any animal you want if A) the animal was born in captivity B) its not potentially dangerous (so you cant just own a tiger in a backyard pen) C) you read a lot and you prepare yourself for any inconviniances this species might have (ferrets odor, bunnies cowardness etc) Read up on skunk care and think honestly if youd be able to raise it and it should be fine. As for surgery-it is probably somewhat painful, any surgery is. But it has you, the owner, to rely on. Youll give them antibiotics, painkillers and give it as much comfort and a quiet warm place to recover.

She tried eating the paint, haha. That's why I introduced the treats at the same time, so she'd choose eating actual food over the weird smelling slim :)

Why are Lollipop's nails so long? Why do skunks like her need to keep them long? Is there a way to shorten them in the wild?

Skunks are diggers. They dig for food, so those claws are used for digging. They'd probably be filed down a bit in the wild just from naturally digging.

the video is cute and entertaining but I seriously doubt the skunk cares about the paint. it's just after the food. Maybe the texture of the paint is pleasing to its paws but mud would have the same effect. Still, it's definitely enjoying the experience as a whole and it's an entertaining watch. thanks.

Is there something wrong with these colors? I just liked the combination :) I've also done blue and purple, and blue and orange (which turned out brown when they mixed). With tempera paints they don't come out as brightly colored when they dry. So these colors do better than others.

Are you sure it is safe for animals. Many things considered safe for humans are not safe for other mammals (chocolate and dogs). Also many things won't show right away. I guess good example is d-limonene (found in black pepper, citrus fruits) causes kidney tumors in male rats.
